Colonel’s Gold Stars

During the month of March, 212 Gold Stars were submitted for students and staff recognized by their peers/

colleagues for going “above and beyond.” This brings our 3rd quarter total to 692. Please encourage your child to

nominate a peer or classroom teacher by filling out a Gold Star. Also, it would be great for parents to fill out

a Gold Star for a staff member that has gone “above and beyond” in regards to any communication or

informative efforts that you may have experienced. They are located in the front office, just ask!

General Expectations

Our expectations of “check it at the door” applies to gum, hats, headphones and cell phones. Cell phones are to be

off upon entering the building at 7:15am and may be turned back on at 2:55pm. Please help us with this policy

by calling the front office should there be a change of dismissal for your child or another urgent family need.

School Attendance

Our school goal is to surpass 2013-2014 school attendance rate of 96%. For the month of March, our school per-

centage was 94.1 %. At this point in time, the current attendance data represents a 2014-2015 school rate of

95.3%! Let’s keep focused on the importance of attending school and being on time as well.

Tardy to Class Recording and Behavior Contracts

Please don’t hesitate to communicate with your child’s team regarding any updates on their Tardy Sheets or Be-

havior Contracts. The goal is to be proactive and have the conversations with students in an effort to help them

manage their time and passing periods more effectively. This is the final Quarter!

Social Media Tips-

Here is a great resource that provides a great overview for parents regarding security measures to take with all of

your child’s technology apps and devices.

http://www.connectsafely.org/cybersecurity

Please remember, it is very helpful to save harassing messages, as this is evidence that is important to prove that

this type of behavior has continued to occur. Save screen shots of any posts and print these for local law enforce-

ment or school personnel when necessary. Most importantly, stress upon your child to tell a parent, school staff

member, or another trusted adult family member as time is of essence. Please contact our Guidance Depart-

ment and/or Administration immediately for assistance.

Page 3: The Colonel’s Chronicle · preparing for our country reports and presentations. In science, Mrs. Pearson will be utilizing this month to look at biomes and ecosystems. Finally,

Spring has finally arrived! Keep checking those agendas and our web-site for information regarding daily assignments. RDS is a great tool that provides up-to-date information on your child’s academic pro-gress.

In math (periods 5, 6, and 7), students will be studying functions, equa-tions and inequalities. Please reference chapter 13 in the Holt (red)textbook. Period 2, Honors Math will be learning to solve multi-step equa-tions and inequalities. Use Chapter 12 in the Holt (blue) book as a refer-ence during these units of study. As always, visit myhrw.com for addition-al practice and at home instruction.

In science, we will be getting smarter about Populations and Communi-ties. The students will be able to explain how living things live together and interact with one another. The students will continue using an Inter-active Science Binder for learning, organizational purposes, and setting/tracking goals.

In social studies, we will begin working on our Country Projects. We will complete the Country Project with a Feast of Cultures. Information about the Country Projects will be going home as we begin them. During the Feast of Cultures, we will need parent volunteers to help make it a suc-cess. Students will also learn about economics by developing a knowledge of stocks and stock markets.

In writing, we will be focusing on descriptive writing. The students will be focusing on the effective components of descriptive writing. In reading, we will continue to focus on plot, theme, point of view, and reading com-

prehension using Question-Answer Relationships. Each language class will continue to focus on different readings during this month.

Visit our team website through the Wheeler homepage. You will find some important documents and a weekly schedule. The agenda pro-vides the most up to date information. You may contact any team member to arrange a conference or to discuss an area of con-cern. Don’t forget all students need to earn a minimum of 12 AR points for the 4th grading period. Happy Reading!

Spring is a-budding in Tall Timbers

With the fresh breezes of April, new learning is taking place. Stu-

dents are beginning to come into their own as they are maturing

for the next school year – and I don’t just mean spring fever! Clas-

ses are more complex, more expectations, but there has been so

much growth this year. At the end of this month, we will be con-

tinuing the multiple choice portion of the ISTEP+ and hopefully

results will be in prior to the end of school.

Our classes’ focus for the month of April include: Language arts

classes will continue in Tuck Everlasting for Mr. Sumner, a novel

study will begin in Mrs. Santos’ room, and Mrs. Bennett will work

with the Great Books discussions. Also writing focuses will include

descriptive writing, figurative language, and response to litera-

ture. Math classes will work on problem solving and also probabil-

ity. Social studies classes complete the Renaissance through the

Industrial Revolution and then jump into our big country projects.

Science classes will begin looking into living things, ecosystems,

and populations as an introduction to the group projects that con-

clude with Park Ranger Day in early June.

Please continue to check my homework calendar on the school website and contact me with any questions. Happy Spring!!

Ms. Stoller:

This month students will be working on a novel study project. They will be reading either Freak the Mighty or So Yesterday and working with a reading group to complete activities related to the novel.

Exceptional Learners

Hello Wheeler families! Here we are, in the home stretch! Encourage your student to "finish strong" and work to achieve their highest grades and greatest improve-ments yet this school year. Set goals now for the end of the year. Ask your student, "What grade would you like to get in math this quarter?" or "Let's make it a goal to remember to pack your homework each night." Setting goals and focusing on a couple areas of need can make the difference. Increase responsibility, and your student will rise to your challenge.

In social studies, we will continue to set the stage for the Civil War. We will

begin by exploring the differences between the North and the South. Also, the

rough draft for the Wax Museum paper is due on May 4th. Hopefully each stu-

dent has discussed his/her project with his/her parents. Students should be

working on tri-fold poster and gathering costume items for our presentation day

(May 22nd).

In pre-Algebra, students will classify real numbers. They will discuss what a

rational, irrational, integer, whole, and natural number are. We will explore

right triangles and apply the Pythagorean Theorem to real-world situations.

After discussing the Pythagorean Theorem, students will discuss rotations, dila-

tions, transformations, and reflections. They will use both shapes and line seg-

ments.

In Algebra, students will explore rational expressions. They will add, subtract,

multiply, and divide them. They will use their previous knowledge of factoring

and apply this concept to rational expressions. After rational expressions, we

will work with radical expressions and quadratic equations.

In English 1, we will be working on our research unit. Students will be generat-

ing a research question that relates to a topic we covered in class.

Congratulations to all of Team Titans for a terrific Science Fair! Thank you to

those family members who helped make the science fair a huge success. In

April, we will start organizing and classifying organisms based on their key fea-

tures. We will then start talking about genetics and how traits are passed from

parents to offspring.

Pre-Algebra

In pre-Algebra we will begin working on plane geometry. Please remember that each week our students have the opportunity to earn a few extra credit points by doing the “Students as Teachers” assignment. Students should teach you two prob-lems that they learned in class. Using what you have learned, you then solve two different problems on your own. This is a great way to see what your child is learn-ing while enhancing their skills at the same time. I look forward to a great 4th Quar-ter.

“Alpha Dogs Steps for ISTEP”

April is a big month here at Col. Wheeler Middle School. This month is the final push

towards gaining all of the knowledge necessary for achieving high scores on the states

standardized test known as ISTEP. We ask that you also coach your children at home

towards the goal of 93.5%. Positive reinforcement will help our students gain the con-

fidence needed for passing these tests. The ISTEP tests are also important because it

helps our school keep the 4 star rating. Our main goal here at the “Colonel” is to be

recognized as one of the top schools in the state at the middle school level.

I would like to take time to issue a special “Thanks” to all of the parents for helping

during our first team science fair. The effort placed into some of these ingenious pro-

jects amazed all of us. The following kids received 1st Place in their specific catego-

ries:

Micayla Greco (Top Overall Winner)

Connor Miller

Julie Tran

Rebecca Yagelski

Samantha Otis

Mackenzie Valles

Jake Dyrkcz

Alexis Hernandez

Engineering & Technology Education

Happy 4th Quarter! Students are in the final rotation of art, mu-

sic, family and consumer science, and technology education

(saving the best for last). Here are the basic details of E&TE –

eight rotations are available to all students where students will

collaborate, critically think, and use hands-on, problem based

learning techniques. Students work in a particular station of their

choice during a specific rotation. Providing a wide-range of tech-

nological stations and experiencing several different learning

styles are two main focal points of the class. To learn more about

each station, feel free to visit the Paxton Patterson website on my

school website. The featured station of the month is Flight Tech-

nology.

Flight Technology

What captures the imagination more than the exploration of

flight? Students quickly understand that the science of rocketry

and flight requires knowledge and application of mathematics and

physics. By building, flying and testing their pneumatic powered

rockets, students realize that their designs and craftsmanship de-

termine flight performance.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month … but you can act to support families and protect children all year round!

For your family:

• As a parent, block out 15 minutes a day to play one-on-one with your child — doing

anything he or she wants. We know from studies that the more parents engage in positive activities with their children, the less they use negative physical and psychological discipline.

• Tell the children or youth in your life how much you care for them and appreciate

them.

• Connect with grandparents to preserve cultural heritage.

For friends and neighbors:

• Compliment a father — someone you know or even someone in public — on something

positive you see him do with his children. Dads contribute uniquely to children’s develop-

ment.

• Offer your time to baby-sit for the child of a friend, neighbor or family member. All

parents need help sometimes — even if it is just to rest or “recharge” for an hour or two.

• Arrange a potluck event in your neighborhood to get to know other parents and their

kids. Friends and neighbors can give outstanding support to families in times of need or

stress.

For your community:

• Do volunteer work for a youth- or family-serving organization in your community.

Some families just need a little help from time to time, and community organizations are de-

signed to do just that.

• Take action on legislative issues that affect children and families. Call your elected rep-

resentatives, join demonstrations and be sure always to vote to show that you support services

to help families raise healthy children.

• Ask yours or another faith-based organization in your community about donations —

even small ones — that can be made to support families in need.

• If you have reason to believe a child may be at risk of harm in their home, call your

local child abuse hotline. Anyone who is worried about the well-being of a child can call to

report their concerns.

April is Autism Awareness Month

What is Autism?

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and autism are both general terms

for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disor-

ders are characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social in-

teraction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behav-

iors. They include autistic disorder, Rett syndrome, childhood disinte-

grative disorder, pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise spec-

ified (PDD-NOS) and Asperger syndrome. With the May 2013 publi-

cation of the new DSM-5 diagnostic manual, these autism subtypes

will be merged into one umbrella diagnosis of ASD, as cited from au-

tismspeaks.org.

This website, a source for parents, educators and students to learn

about this disorder, states that an estimated 1 out of 54 boys and 1 in

252 girls are diagnosed with autism in the United States.

Having autism does not mean a person is incapable of interacting with

others or gaining employment. Many people with autism hold full

time jobs and have very healthy relationships. Some have artistic and

intellectual talents that surpass the average range of abilities.

To learn more about autism, visit www.autismspeaks.org.

April Showers Bring May Flowers…. April is the time of the year where the weather really starts to change. The average tempera-

tures this time of year can range from 38 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Please remember to dress

appropriately for the weather. Dressing in layers can help with your comfort level here at

April also brings about a lot of changes in regards to nature. These seasonal changes bring

about seasonal allergies. If you suffer from allergies, please remember to take your medication

daily or before school starts in the morning. It is very hard to concentrate and learn when you

experience the following symptoms: irritated, itchy or watery eyes; stuffy/runny nose; sneezing;

coughing. A simple action, such as remembering to take your medicine before school, will help

make your day flow more smoothly.

Cell Phone Danger!!!

Did you read that little piece of paper that came with your cell phone telling you to keep it a cer-

tain distance from your body??? There is research linking cell phones to cancer and infertility.

Some experts believe we should take the warnings seriously. “Phones act like small microwaves

by emitting radiation, which, over time, may be harmful,” says Devra Davis, PhD. Protect your

health by:

O Not making calls when the signal is weak. If your phone is having a hard time finding a

signal, it puts out more energy to reach a tower—which means more radiation.

O Getting a headset or using the speaker option so you can chat without the phone being

right next to your head.

O Carrying your phone in a purse or bag, rather than in your pocket near sensitive body

parts.

Physicals for next year….

Physicals obtained on April 1st or after are good for all of the 2015/2016 school year.

PTA NEWS

Hello from your PTA!

We had a great Wheeler Palooza! Over 220 students came for fun and music. Many talented students enjoyed our Karaoke event and the gymnasium was full of dancers for the electric slide.

So far this year, the PTA has been able to provide funds to all teams and organiza-tions through our monthly spirit gear sales and student events.

Thank you to the families that sent in donations and those who were able to volunteer. Together we make a difference for our school!

In April, we will have a PTA meeting on Thursday, April 9th at 1:30 p.m. and again on

Tuesday, April 14th at 6:30 p.m. We will sell spirit gear during lunches on Friday, April

24th. Our meetings will focus on Teacher Appreciation Week and our Staff Luncheon.

If you are interested in helping out, please contact me at [email protected].

Happy spring break!
