Magic was created and enjoyed on Friday April 12th at the College Club It was the first of (hopefully) many DINING IN dinners at the College Club Our Executive Chef Remy Steele and her welcoming team created a memorable delicious and elegant evening Tables for 2 4 or 6 guests were tastefully decorated and perfectly positioned for privacy throughout the dining room reminding me of an English private dining club The staggered seatings at 630 and 715 made for an easy transition and avoided crowding at the buffet tables We were greeted by a cheerful hostess who escorted us to the cozy lounge to have a drink while we waited to be seated at our table On our way to our table we couldnrsquot help but notice the beautiful salad and soup bar and the main course buffet at the end of the long roomOur helpful server kindly introduced herself and took additional drink orders and clearly explained the separate buffet tables and that a dessert menu would come at the end of our main courseFrom beginning to end the food the service and the ambiance were outstanding The first course buffet station featured lobster bisque smooth and creamy with bits of sweet lobster meat the basil tomato soup was tasty with fresh leaves of basil swimming in the rich flavors The salad bar filled with early spring greens and every imaginable accompaniment chopped avocado spicy peppers marinated tomatoes pickled red onions bell pepper julienne baby cucumbers shaved fennel crumbled blue cheese in addition to balsamic vinaigrette the most deliciously herby green goddess salad dressingThe main buffet offering was a perfectly cooked flaky roasted salmon juicy tender and flavorful lemony chicken breast and thighs fragrant roasted multi colored baby carrots with maple and rosemary savory wild rice brought alive with shaved almonds and dried apricots early spring grilled asparagus roasted parsley tossed baby potatoes The agrave la carte dessert topped off the evening with choices from warm mixed berry crisp with vanilla bean ice cream delicate lemon cake with fresh fruit or the decadent flourless chocolate tea cup with marscapone whip cream I hope your mouth is watering nowIt was a perfect evening and the first I can remember in years where we could relax and enjoy fine dining where gentle conversation and laughter filled the roomI hope you sign up early for the next DINING IN Your treat is waiting

We have enjoyed three stellar events this spring as well as many regular meetings and pop-up occasions The Dining In (as described by enthusiastic participant Deborah Wilson in this newsletter) an author talk and a wine tasting
On March 27 author Steve Kurkjian spoke about his book ldquoMaster Thievesrdquo on the 1990 theft of 13 art masterpieces worth $500 million from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum Steve a reporter on the ldquoBoston Globerdquo Spotlight team has won two Pulitzer Prizes We enjoyed a nice meal as always and some new perspectives on this monumental robbery It was a full house for a good talkWe also had a full house for the Italian Wine Tasting featuring Bob ldquoBZrdquo Zohn who provided a very informative (and amusing) talk great wines and a fabulous dinner A number of creative and wonderful courses followed each other as BZ paired food with his selections Everyone
I spoke to asked for a reprise in the fall perhaps featuring French or Portuguese wines which is tentatively scheduled for October 25There are two events coming up that you shouldnrsquot miss the Scholarship Awards on May 8 and the Annual Meeting on May 20 Over a hundred scholarship applicants sent in their essays and details you may have seen Scholarship Fund members in our dining room at the Club working into the evening as they reviewed the applications It is SO important that we have as many there as possible to celebrate with the recipients and encourage them on their way forwardSome of you will not have participated in an Annual Meeting yet so I thought I would say a little about what happens Attendees mingle for a half hour or so while the Board meets to approve minutes from the last meeting vote in any new members and take care of urgent issues The reception is followed by a dinner after which the meeting begins All Committee Chairs provide a year-end report the Distinguished Service Award is presented and other items of interest are shared with the guests In all the time I have been here I can say that these reports are seldom boring or routine I couldnrsquot possibly convey the time energy wisdom and foresight that so many members put into preserving our Clubrsquos well-being as we move into the futureI look forward to seeing you soon Best wishes to you allChristine

Academic DevelopmentI asked Halimo to describe any challenges she had had in her first years at Brandeis and how she overcame them ldquoJosiah Quincy Upper School afforded a decent education but in freshman year of college I was in classes with incredibly skilled students displaying significant academic tools I realized I had deficits I had to learn to think critically as well as to write well-structured arguments and grammatically correct essaysldquoTutoring at the Writing Center made a decisive difference in my academic improvement
