THE COLLECTORSHistorically, Britain is a nation of collectors, so we went to find some unusual examples of the fanatical trait. Nigel James discovered an amazing array of subject matter; a collection of weighing scales, a man who has amassed over 2,000 blow lamps, scale models of hand made Gypsy caravans which take up to six months to make, a vast selection of 1950s road making equipment, old tools and road rollers to name just a few. He takes a look at collections of agricultural implements, lamps, poacher’s tools, man and animal traps and also spends some time chatting to a traditional knife grinder from Somerset whose equipment is over 100 years old and still works as well as it ever did! Sit back and take a look at the strange obsessions of some fascinating people in the wonderful world of “The Collectors”.

CONQUEST OF EVERESTWhat drove the men who risked and lost their lives to conquer the world’s highest mountain for Britain? Fifty years on, Penny Mallory, whose ancestor, George Leigh Mallory lost his life, tells the story of this extra-ordinary adventure, undertaken with primitive equipment in often terrifying weather conditions against an unstable, brooding and often lethal adversary - Mount Everest. Did Mallory in fact reach the summit 29 years before Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay? Mallory’s frozen body was found in 1999. Using authentic footage of the ascent we revisit this unique adventure fifty years on, alongside the men who pitted their wits and lives for the privilege of being the first to say that they had stood on the roof of the world. Which of us could have climbed, persevered and ultimately stood beside them beneath the Union Jack on that glorious sun-drenched May morning in 1953? The DVD also features biographies of the expedition’s members and a chronology of those other brave men and women who have lost their lives on subsequent dashes for the summit.

THE REAL JAMES DEANIn a soft Californian twilight, on a quiet road on the evening of September 30th 1955, a young man in a high-powered sports car was involved in a fatal accident. All such deaths are tragic for the family and friends of the victim, but this tragedy traumatised a generation and took from the world an actor who, although he had only just started out in Hollywood, had already ensured our enduring fascination with the three films he had completed and with his extraordinary and unique talent. His name was James Dean.

Against a montage of cascading snow hurtling down from jagged mountains tops, we are reminded that avalanches are among the most lethal weapons in nature’s arsenal. Avalanches of glowing red lava and hot ash erupt from volcanoes, swirling with noxious fumes that poison the atmosphere. Avalanches of rock rush like water, destroying everything in their path. With the use of stunning footage and harrowing personal tales, this DVD reveals the mechanisms by which these forces of nature wreak havoc.

This DVD explains how these freaks of weather are formed and what scientists know about them. Extensive footage from “storm chasers”, interviews with eyewitnesses and home-video make compelling viewing as winds up to 300mph tear across the screen.

ALCATRAZDEFYING THE ROCK

Rising through the dense fog lying like a blanket on San Francisco Bay, appears the silhouette of an icon of penal incarceration - The Rock. At the time of its construction Alcatraz was considered the most escape proof prison in America and a more than adequate solution to the alarming rise in organised criminal activity and violent crime which had blighted the nation. Heavily armed guards, tool-proof bars and shark-infested waters did little however to prevent some of her more creative inmates from attempting the seemingly impossible - to escape from Alcatraz Island. Join us as we examine some of the “breaks-for-freedom”; the plans behind the attempts and determine if anyone was ever successful in defying The Rock.

THE BERLIN WALLESCAPE TO FREEDOM

A tyrannical regime builds a monstrous concrete slab that severs a city - the Berlin Wall. On the Western side, it’s a hated symbol of a bitter Cold War, on the East, a deadly blockade to freedom. The Berlin Wall: Escape To Freedom reveals the stories of courageous East Germans who dared to challenge the authorities and the Berlin Wall in their bid for freedom. From tunnelling under the Wall, to smuggling refugees in a car’s trunk, to flights over the Wall, uncover the details of sensational escape stories. It takes us into the heart of the Death Strip - a lethal zone next to the Wall filled with barbed wire, mines, attack dogs, tank traps and armed guards - and shows us how authorities learned from each escape to make the Wall stronger and harder to beat. Finally, the Wall that was strengthened over 28 years was breached in one unbelievable night, while signs of the divisions of generations past still lingers on today.

BURMA’S OPEN ROAD A fascinating insight into how Burma’s future may be affected if its government takes the major decision to allow the building of a road through its lands to create a direct link between China and India. On a positive note, the building of the road will provide work for its people and allow easy access for tourism to Burma’s wildlife reservations and ensure long-term economic stability for the country. On a negative note, it is seen as an environmental disaster waiting to happen, as untouched jungle is cut down to make way for the road. It could also potentially sound the death knell for many of the country’s ancient traditions, cultures and wildlife that have so far remained untroubled by the outside world. Burma’s geographical standing between China and India, two of the world’s fastest growing economies, provides a corridor of trade that is too financially important to ignore with potential trade worth billions of dollars crossing its borders annually. The arguments for and against are simple: modernisation vs. preservation.

CLAIMING JUSTICEIn the United States high-risk-high-reward legal battles are as common as Big Macs. In this scenario, ‘contingency fee lawyers’ are a special breed. “No Win No Fee” is the name of their game. They advertise at every corner of the street to find personal injury victims. If the case is won, the lawyer gets a large chunk of the pie. If not, the client walks away free of charge. The number of civil law suits is also soaring in the UK and like the Americans, victims here are increasingly claiming financial damages for their injuries. A new breed of personal injury lawyers are helping them to achieve their goal... it would appear that the UK is rapidly heading towards the American system.

HONG KONG GARRISONTHE MAKING OF A SOLDIER

At midnight on July 1st 1997 after 150 years of British rule, history was made when four thousand Chinese troops crossed the border to reclaim control of Hong Kong. The impeccably orchestrated handover was the result of four years intense training for the soldiers under the command of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA). Each soldier endured months of early morning marching drills, gruelling physical training and much-dreaded self-criticism sessions to become a defender of the reclaimed land. Through the eyes of two young recruits (Han Qiang - 19 and Xu Zhao - 20), we gain a truly unique insight into a garrison which remains surprisingly different from those of the modern western world. The never-before-seen images reveal the recruit’s pride and heartache at being isolated from the outside world and what it takes to be a member of Hong Kong’s elite defence force.

THE CAPITAL CITIES OF THE WORLD - DUBLIN

In many of the world’s great cities travelling between the various attractions can be time consuming and expensive but a visit to Ireland’s fascinating capital Dublin will certainly encourage you to travel on foot. Gracing both banks of the River Liffey, even crossing the beautiful bridges is a delightful experience and with classically proportioned Georgian architecture surrounding peaceful elegant greens, it would seem that this is one city that has had a painless evolution. But look a little more closely and Dublin has a very different story to tell. The fight for independence, whether from marauding Vikings or their British neighbours, has dominated Dublin’s history and the battle scars can still be found if you know where to look. From the General Post Office on O’Connell Street, that was at the heart of the Easter Rising of 1916, to Dublin Castle, once a symbol of occupation, there are many places of interest that highlight Dublin’s tempestuous past. Coupled with this history is a deserved reputation for being one of the most lively and hospitable cities in the world; Dublin the jewel of the Emerald Isle.

THE CAPITAL CITIES OF THE WORLD - BERLIN

Of all the cities in the world, in more recent times Berlin has undergone the most dramatic transformation and yet has still maintained its ancient charms. As the headquarters of Adolf Hitler’s campaign for world domination in the 1930s and 40s, Berlin suffered terrible reprisals, not least the eventual separation of the east from the west of the city by the now defunct Berlin Wall. Nevertheless, this is one of the world’s liveliest cities with an air of culture, artistic freedom and optimism that is truly not to be missed. Berlin is without doubt a city of contrasts, where the magnificent architecture of the Brandenburg Gate appears opulent and lavish compared to the simple dignity of the memorial to the murdered Jews of Europe. Each landmark has its part to play in commemorating what happened here in Berlin, while the nightlife of the Potsdamer Platz and the elegant tree-lined avenue of Unter Den Linden stand testament to this city’s incredible resilience and ability to survive.

THE CAPITAL CITIES OF THE WORLD - VIENNA

When it comes to culture there are few cities of the world that can compare with the capital of Austria, Vienna. It is the city where young Mozart performed for the Hapsburgs and where his operatic masterpieces “The Magic Flute” and “The Marriage Of Figaro” were first performed in the 18th Century. Following in his musical footsteps the likes of Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner and Schubert were all drawn to Vienna, and of course the lilting waltzes of Johann Strauss, father and son, are now synonymous with this beautiful city. Nevertheless, there is much more to Vienna than wonderful music and for the visitors who come here there is a great deal to see. From the magnificent palaces and manicured parks to Old Vienna and the Jewish District, this city is alive with history wherever you go. GEORGE ELIOTGeorge Eliot, author of ‘Adam Bede’, ‘The Mill on the Floss’, ‘Silas Marner’, ‘Middlemarch’ and ‘Daniel Deronda’, achieved mass popularity (Queen Victoria was among her readership), and was acclaimed by her literary contemporaries, including Tolstoy and Henry James. In contrast, Marian Evans flouted Victorian conventions by living with a man she was unable to marry, and by ceasing to attend church. She was refused entry to Victorian society, she was virtually banished by her family, and she never again saw the countryside of her youth. This programme tells the story of Marian Evans, from her pious Midland childhood, through her development into an independent minded academic, before emerging as the novelist George Eliot. She transformed the novel from a form of entertainment, to a social critique incorporating serious moral judgements and faithful representations of commonplace things.

ALICE‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’ was published in 1865, and revolutionised children’s writing. It made a mockery of much that had preceded it; the cautionary tale where young mischievous children were soundly punished for their misdeeds, and school tales that expressed the view that those who obeyed the rules would be celebrated and rewarded. At it’s core is a world where cause and effect have little relationship in either the material or moral sphere. Yet within this baffling and unpredictable realm, one character emerges who is capable of challenging the chaos and attempting to bestow order on it - Alice. This programme explores the tragic and impossible love affair that underlay the creation of this work of comic and verbal genius. It also investigates the influences that helped form the attitudes of the brilliant Oxford don who gave birth to a unique world whose influence on every form of creative media can hardly be overestimated.

Travelling through the realms that Robin is said to have haunted, and studying the literary sources that portrayed him, we attempt to find who this man was and what he stood for, the outlaw of Sherwood Forest who became the prototype and quintessence of the image of the romantic rebel.
