The Cocos (K) Islands Community Resource Centre is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic young person/s to take on the role of distributing The Atoll each fortnight on Home and West Island during 2018.

This is a great opportunity to gain some extra cash! Please forward your interest with the approval from parents to the Coordinator, Kelly Edwards by Friday 22nd December 2017. The first edition will be available for distribution on Thursday 18th

January 2018.

2018 COCOS CALENDAR & TIDE CHART

The 2018 Cocos Calendar will be available for sale from Saturday 2nd December - this make great Christmas gifts! Pre-ordering is available, please contact our office to book your copies.

Our 2018 tide charts (in both A4 and laminated A3) should be available in the first week of December. Colour coded for both low and high tides, and includes moon cycles. These are a must for the fridge at home so you can plan your camping and fishing trips!

SCHEDULING OF MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETINGS 2018

It is hereby notified for public information that Council has scheduled

the following meeting dates for its monthly ordinary meetings in 2018.

Residents are reminded that Council conducts a 15 minute Public Question Time at the commencement of the monthly meetings and Council would welcome residents attending the

meeting to put questions or merely observe the proceedings of the meeting.

Should any of the above dates or venues change for reasons beyond Council’s control, residents will be notified via

advertising in “The Atoll”.

PROPOSED DISPOSITION OF PROPERTY

“WINDSURF BEACH”

In accordance with Section 3.58 (3) and (4) of the Local Government Act 1995 (WA) (CKI), Council is required to give public notice of any disposition of property. This includes selling, leasing, or otherwise disposing of, whether absolutely or not.

Council resolved at its November 2017 ordinary meeting to enter into Lease Agreement with 2nd Wind Sailboards for Part Lot 100, Plan 18500 Airforce Road, West Island for a period of 5 years with a 5 year option. This portion of land has been valued at $1352/annum and the Lessee will be paying an amount of $1352 as well as annual CPI increases and the assessed annual Council Rates set from year to year.

Council invites written submission from residents regarding the proposed disposition with submission closing on COB Wednesday 13th December 2017, marked confidential and addressed to the undersigned.

KEEPING CHICKENS IN BACKYARDS

The Shire Ranger would like to remind that 12 weeks old chickens should be re-located at the designated area (Garden plot).

Chicken pens should not be placed straight onto the ground behind back backyards at any time.

I would like advise that all chicken pens carrying less than 12 weeks chicks should carry a ‘catchment device’ or tray underneath pens to catch waste and to avoid waste from entering straight through the ground.

Shire Ranger ingin mengingatkan yang anak ayam yang lebih dari 12 minggu mesti dimengalehkan ke kawasan kebon parma yang telah disediakan.

NEW GYM OPENING

We will be celebrating the opening of our new gym on Home Island at 5.00pm Wednesday 29th November 2017 and we'd love for you to join us!

Have a look around our new facility in the ‘old canteen’ building and be sure to sign up for your annual membership.

Annual membership is $50.00. You can choose to pay on the day or have the membership amount invoiced to you. If you join during opening day, you will receive a one month free membership, which will expire 31st December 2018...Aaaand you will be able to use the gym that evening!

A bbq will also be supplied by the Shire during the event after the official opening.

In preparation for the opening, the current gym will have limited machines between Monday 27th—Wednesday 29th November.

Aloe vera is a popular medicina plant that has been used for thousands of years. It is best known for treating skin injuries, but also has several other beneficial effects on health. Contains healthy plant compounds. Aloe vera is a thick, short-stemmed plant that stores water in its leaves. Aloe vera is well recognized by its thick, pointed and fleshy green leaves, which can grow to about 12-19 inches (30-50 cm) in length. Each leaf is full of a slimy tissue that stores water, which makes the leaves thick. This slimy, water-filled tissue is the "gel" we associate with Aloe vera products. The gel contains most of the bioactive compounds in the plant, including vitamins, minerals, amino acids and antioxidants.

Has antioxidant and antibacterial properties Aloe vera gel contains powerful antioxidants, which belong to a large family of substances known as polyphenols. These polyphenols, along with several other compounds in Aloe vera, can help inhibit the growth of certain bacteria that can cause infections in humans.

PETREL ON THE RUNWAY is back. When we have a plane with its engines running on the tarmac at 5.30 in the afternoon, this Barua’s Petrel comes out to play. It seems to be using the hot thermals off the plane to build up speed so it can go hooning. These birds live their life out to sea only returning to the mountains of Reunion Island to breed. Ten years ago they were an endangered species . The young were coming out of their burrow nests at night for their first flight to the oceans but headed to the street lights in confusion. In 2011 a rescue program was started and 800 young birds were picked up off the ground and taken out to sea for release. November is the normal months for these birds to nest . While nesting they return to their

burrows daily. I did see two birds one evening last week. Geof Christie.
