INTRODUCING OUR JUDGES

Dogs — Mrs B. Ward (Wensum)I am honoured to have been voted to judge dogs at the Cocker Spaniel Club Championship show in 2020.

Cocker Spaniels came into my life in the 1970s in the form of a lovely golden bitch ‘Emma’ from ‘Lochnell’ lines. I met Mr and Mrs Smith (Sorbrook) when I decided to have a litter with her. I kept a black bitch but lost her tragically so I put my name down for a ‘Sorbrook’. ‘Wensum Shady Lady’ from Sorbrook lines together with a golden ‘Sorbrook Sundae’ are behind all my ‘Wensum’ solids. I made up two black Show Champion half brother and sister Sh Ch Wensum January Jane and Sh Ch Wensum Topspin and I have bred many others who have achieved high honours.

A blue roan Sharemead bitch helped complete the colour spectrum and I had great fun with Wensum Blues and Twos JW, her son. My orange, Pearkim Persephone at Wensum is also a delightful character and enjoyable to show.

We owned Flat Coated Retrievers for a number of years. I showed them occasionally and my husband worked them but losing two trained Gundogs in their prime to cancer was so upsetting the working dogs are now an English Springer and a Labrador.

I started judging in the early 1980s at Open Shows, then Breed Club Open Shows, giving tickets for the first time at National Gundog in 2000. I have been lucky enough to judge many times in the UK and occasionally overseas.

Aside from judging and showing I am currently Chairman of Solid Colours, Hon. Secretary of Coventry Cocker, a Breed Council Officer, organise the Discover Dogs stand for The Cocker club and a long serving Instructor/Officer at my local Dog Club. I am very much looking forward to judging my favourite breed at the Cocker Spaniel Club.

Bitches — Mrs L. Parker (Weyhill)My association with Cocker Spaniels began when as a young child I was taken to visit my grandparents, owners of a golden boy called 'Bob', he had the most soulful eyes!!

George bought me our first Cocker in 1980, a blue roan granddaughter of Sh Ch Chrisolin Cambiare, she did quite well despite our ineptitude, unfortunately she turned out to be a carrier of FN.

After a few years our family was joined by a black bitch from Mrs Jean Smith's Sorbrook Kennel.

George and I continued to show and breed a few litters and serve our time on our local canine society Committee, I was also Secretary at Coventry Cocker for 25 years.

In 2006 we purchased a black bitch from Sue and Annie Kettle, she was Lujesa Daniella at Weyhill, and my absolute soul mate, from her we bred our Sh Ch Weyhill Isabella by Sh Ch Charbonnel Swedish Design who in turn when mated to Sh Ch Canigou Rocket Science produced our beautiful Weyhill Wish List, what a legacy she left.

I awarded my first set of CCs in 2004 at Home Counties Cocker Club and have given a further five sets, I have been lucky enough to judge in the Czech Republic, Sweden, Belgium and Finland.

I feel very honoured to have been elected to judge Bitches at the Cocker Spaniel Club and I am very much looking forward to it.

7. The Committee reserves to itself the right to refuse entries. 8. Puppies under six calendar months of age on the first day of the Show are not eligible for exhibition. 9. The mating of bitches within the precincts of the Show is forbidden. 10. Best Puppy in Show: Where a Best Puppy in Show competition is scheduled the Best Puppy in Show is a puppy

which has competed and is unbeaten by any other puppy exhibited at the same show. A puppy is a dog of six and not exceeding twelve calendar months of age on the first day of the Show. Where the Best in Show is a puppy it should automatically be awarded Best Puppy in Show. Where the Reserve Best in Show is a puppy which has only been beaten by an adult dog it should also automatically be Best Puppy in Show. Consequently, selection of Best Puppy in Show must follow the selection of Best in Show.

11. Best in Show: Best in Show must be selected from the exhibits declared Best of Sex. If a Reserve Best in Show is to be selected, the eligible dogs are those declared Best Opposite Sex and Reserve Best of Sex to the exhibit declared Best in Show.

12. Exhibits will not be admitted to Best in Show competition after a period of ten minutes has elapsed since the announcement that exhibits are required for judging, unless they have been unavoidably delayed by previous judging not being completed on time, and then only with the special permission of the Show Management.

13. Exhibitors must not pick up dogs by their tails and leads when lifting them nor handle a dog in a manner which causes its feet not to touch the ground when on the move. This is not acceptable. Exhibitors should note that such practice would constitute harsh handling and reports of such practice will be referred to the Committee under Kennel Club Show Regulation F11.

14. All exhibitors must be familiar with Kennel Club Regulation F (Annex B) - Regulations for the Preparation of Dogs for Exhibition.

15. All dogs resident outside of the UK must be issued with a Kennel Club Authority to Compete number before entry to the show/event can be made. All overseas entries without an Authority to Compete number will be returned to the exhibitor/competitor.

16. Dogs in Vehicles on Hot Days. Your dog is vulnerable and at risk during hot weather and the Kennel Club offers the following guidance to help guide you through the do’s and don’ts travelling to and whilst at KC licensed events.• When travelling to a show please take a moment to consider whether the route to the show is on a busy holiday

route, and leave earlier to avoid increased time in traffic jams.• If your vehicle is not air-conditioned seriously consider whether travelling to the show is a good idea at all.• The vehicle should be as fully ventilated as possible, and plenty of stops should be taken, with lots of water

available to drink.• Ensure your dog is not sitting in full sunlight. There should be plenty of free flowing air around the dog.• When at the show, never leave your dog in the vehicle.• Keep the dog in the shade - take your own shade for example a large umbrella and always have plenty of water

available to drink so your dog stays well hydrated.• Avoid your dog taking part in unnecessary exertion, or from standing in exposed sunlight for extended lengths

of time. Remember, if you feel hot your dog is very likely to feel much hotter and dehydrated, and this could lead to dire results.

Please look after your dog’s welfare. WARNING: IF YOUR DOG IS FOUND TO BE AT RISK FORCIBLE ENTRY TO YOUR VEHICLE MAY BE NECESSARY WITHOUT LIABILITY FOR ANY DAMAGE CAUSED.

17. Anyone whose dog is entered at a Kennel Club licensed event should take all reasonable steps to ensure the needs of their dog(s) are met, and should not put a dog’s health and welfare at risk by any action, default, omission or otherwise. Breach of Kennel Club Regulations in this respect may be referred to the Board for disciplinary action under the Kennel Club Rules and Regulations. The use of pinch collars, electronic shock collars, or prong collars,

Page 10: THE COCKER SPANIEL CLUB - Fosse Data

is not permitted at any show licensed by the Kennel Club. This shall apply at the venue or within the precincts of the show.

18. Not for Competition entries will be accepted. Details of each dog so entered must be recorded on the entry form and must be Kennel Club registered.

19. No modifications will be made to this Schedule except by permission of the Board of the Kennel Club, which will be followed by advertisement in the Canine Press wherever possible.

20. The Show will be held under Kennel Club Rules and Regulations. All dogs must be registered or transferred at the Kennel Club at the time of entry.

21. Committee reserve to themselves the right to refuse, on reasonable grounds, any entries they may think fit; to exclude or remove any dog not in a fit state for exhibition either from disease, vice, natural or any other cause, and if such exclusion takes place either before or after the dog has been judged the entrance fee will be forfeited.

22. No animal, other than a dog duly enterd at the Show, will be allowed within the precincts of the Show during its continuance.

23. PASSES WILL NOT BE SENT OUT. If receipt of entry is required please enclose a stamped, addressed postcard with your entries.

24. Should a Judge be unable to fulfil his appointment, the Committee reserve the right to appoint another in his place in which case exhibitors are at liberty to withdraw from competition but no entry fees can be returned.

25. The Judge will be instructed and empowered to withhold any Prize in any class if, in his opinion, the dog does not possess sufficient merit. The Judge is not empowered to give Prizes beyond those offered in the Schedule. The Judge's decision shall be final except in the casse of fraud or misrepresentation or where a bona fide mistake has been made by the Judge.

26. The Committee will be most anxious for the care and safety of exhibits and exhibitors but it must be distinctly understood by all persons attending the Show that the Committee will not be held responsible for the loss, detention of or damage to any dog or property, whether arising from accident or any other cause whatsoever, or by any act or omission of themselves, their officers, agents, servants or others.

27. All Rules, Regulations, Definitions or instructions in the nature of Rules and Regulations printed for convenience in other parts of this Schedule shall be deemed to be the Regulations of the Committee and shall have the same effect as if they formed a part of these Regulations.

28. Every exhibitor making an entry or entries at this Show shall be deemed to have agreed to abide by the Rules and Regulations of the Kennel Club and of this Show Committee. It is on this understanding only that entires are received.

29. The Committee of the Show can accept no responsibility for products advertised or sold by stand holders at the Show and remind exhibitors that grooming products on sale may not meet the requirements of the Regulations for the Preparation of Dogs for Exhibition.

30. May we remind exhibitors that they are responsible for clearing up any fouling made by dogs in their charge, whether it be inside the hall or outside. Anyone failing to clear up will be reported to the Committee who may enforce the right to refuse entries from that exhibitor for future Shows.

31. The owner, exhibitor, handler or other person in charge of a dog at Kennel Club licensed events must at all times ensure that the dog is kept under proper control whilst at the licensed venue, including its environs, car and caravan parks and approaches. This Regulation applies before (at any time during the set up period at the venue), during the event and afterwards (at any time during the breakdown of the event).

32. A dog may be disqualified by the Board from any award, whether an objection has been lodged or not, if proved amongst other things to have been: a) registered or recorded as having been bred by the scheduled Judge, this shall not apply to a Judge appointed in an emergency; b) exhibited without payment of appropriate entry fees.

33. Every exhibitor shall ensure that whilst the dog is being exhibited, its handler shall display the correct ring number.
