At The Cobb School we believe children should play outside in chilly weather, and only if temperatures dip too low will they stay in for recess, so be sure your child has a coat, snow pants, boots, hat and gloves. Indoor dismissal typically begins after Thanksgiving, but cold or windy days may send us inside. Please be on the lookout for the Rainy Day Duck hanging in Margaret’s window. If the duck is there between now and Thanksgiving, you know to pick up your child from the hallway rather than the playground. If inclement weather interferes with the school day, you should be hearing from us. If a decision regarding a delay or closing is made in the morning, you should receive a call to one phone in your house around 6am. If a decision is made at any other time of the time, you should receive calls on every number you’ve submitted to the directory. That way we can inform you no matter where you are. You should also receive an email. Lastly, the notifications should appear on our website homepage and area television stations. Please email [email protected] with any queries or changes to your contact numbers. Hurray for the frosty days ahead! A friendly reminder to kindly honor our parking signs by not parking in designated spots, including spots purchased by generous donors at our annual auction. These spots are reserved during the school day and during evening events. Thank you.

Notes about Wintry Weather

Now that the cold weather has arrived, please be sure your child has winter gear for outdoor play. A Beautiful Start: This morning at The

Cobb School

Congratulations, Lynn!

Upper Elementary sees what’s coming

This is how we do it: Parent Night at The

Cobb School

The Cobb School Thanks... Notes & Reminders

Please join us for a Parent Coffee on Wednesday, No-vember 14 at 8:30am in the library. Mary Lou Cobb will lead a discussion of “Montessori in the Home.”

Learn about ways you can prepare your home to best suit your child’s needs. Engage in a lively discussion of what it means to support your child’s desire and responsibility to care for him/herself and the environment. Montessori is an “aid to life” and flourishes when parents understand the home-school partnership and all they can do to support their child’s developing needs.

Please note the principles that will be explored during this discussion can be applied to families with children of all ages. We encourage parents with children in any level at the school to attend.

...the parents in Maureen’s class who provided a spec-tacular lunch for the staff on Thursday! What a won-derful treat and so well-timed with Parents’ Night that evening. Thank you!

(Please be sure to stop by the conference room to pick up your platters, bowls, etc.)

Primary and Elementary Parent Conferences are scheduled for November 28, 29 and 30. Conference sign-up sheets will be available in the Nest starting No-vember 13 at 8:15am. Please stop in at your convenience to sign up.

Also, please note there will be a 1pm dismissal for ED and EL on all three days.

The Nest will be in session as usual.

Upper Elementary parents are invited to join their child in the classroom after school on either November 26 or 27 from 3:15 to 4:15. As both a complement and follow-up to Parent Night, UEL parents are invited for more un-interrupted time to sit with their child and look at his or her work.

This 30-60 minute parent-child "conference" will benefit both participants. During these work-viewing sessions the children will show you their written work and how they organize it. You may ask your child which work is particularly appealing, enjoyable or challenging, and your presence and attention will speak volumes.

In Montessori classrooms "product" is much less important than process, and this is not a time to critique your child's work, but rather to gain insight into your child's abilities and interests, which you and your child’s teacher will dis-cuss in the parent-teacher conferences in the days immedi-ately following this work viewing.

We hope all our UEL parents will take advantage of this new opportunity at The Cobb School.

...to all the parents who attended Parents’ Night! Thank you for joining your children in their “ children’s house.” We hope you got a chance to see your child demonstrate his or her favorite work and enjoyed your whole evening!

Be on the look out for your invitation to our community-wide, complimentary holiday gathering! Ring in the holiday season with good food and good friends!

The Ski Club

The Ski Club participates in a program run by Ski Sundown in New Hartford, approximately 25 minutes from The Cobb School. The club meets for 6 Fridays beginning the first week of January. Children ages 8 and older have the option of participating in an hour lesson at 4:30 pm (lessons are only the first five sessions). Parents can purchase a 4-hour lift ticket for themselves, for the child who is taking a lesson or skiing and for younger siblings. Rental equipment is also avail-able. Barbara Friedland will coordinate registration and payment for the program through The Cobb School. Once the program begins, parents are responsible for transporting their children to and from Ski Sundown. (We hope you’ll consider carpool-ing with other families.) Parents are also responsible for their child’s safety at the ski area. This activity is not sponsored by The Cobb School or any of its employees, but rather the school provides a meeting place and registration coordination. Dates for the program are Fridays: January 4, 11, 18, 25 and February 1, 8 Rates: Lesson and Lift $205 Lift only $157 Passholder Lesson $105 Equipment Rental $132 Lift Only age 7 or younger $96 Equipment can also be rented at Ski Tunes or Joe Jones. Please contact me for more information about rentals. If you have questions or would like to sign up, please contact Barbara at [email protected] or call her at 860.658.1144. The deadline for registration is Tuesday, November 13.

By Courtney Fairchild On October 23rd the Sixth Years went to Flamig Farm. To add to the fun, and to be more friendly to the environment, we rode through Ethel Walker Woods on bikes. Barbara and Dr. Kuliki guided us on the trails to the farm. When we got there, Nevin Christensen gave us a tour. We learned about solar power and eco-friendly solar powered water heaters. Nevin also demonstrated how he turned used cooking oil, lye, and methanol into bio-diesel fuel. After that, we explored the farm and its animals on our own. The girls en-joyed feeding the horses fresh grass and the boys enjoyed watching the pigs. We also looked at the composting process, which involved grinding big pieces of wood into small woodchips. We continued biking to Tulmeadow Farm where we ended our journey and refueled ourselves with ice cream. We had a wonderful time on the trip to Flamig Farm.
