Entertainer Spotlight
Jennifer Monaghan is a volunteer at our Micco
facility. Twice a month, she brings music to our
loved ones.
Jennifer Monaghan is a lifelong learner, teacher,
and music lover. From an early age, as the first
born, Jennifer enjoyed teaching her siblings what
she learned in school. Her career path took her
from education to law to banking; and, ultimately,
equipped with a doctorate in education from The
University of San Francisco, she returned to
teaching.
In her ongoing quest to expand her horizon culturally and socially, Jennifer became a
Foreign Expert in Culture and Education in China for a number of years.
Since retiring to Brevard County six years ago, Jennifer has continued to learn and share
with the community, as she has done in all the communities where she has lived. She
finally had the time to devote to improving her skills as a musician. She plays handbells in a
Palm Bay church choir, she’s taking piano lessons as well as learning to play the ukulele.
Jennifer has also become an enthusiastic ‘butterflier’ as a member of the butterfly survey
team of volunteers at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge.
A freelance writer for many years, Jennifer is now a regular contributing writer for Senior
Life newspaper.
“I’m ecstatic and forever grateful that I’ve been able to do the things I’ve done. I grew up
in Jamaica. In the U.S. I’ve lived in major cities on the east coast, west coast and in the
Midwest. I was a teacher, a secretary, and ultimately a Vice President and manager at a
major bank in New York. I’ve travelled all over the world, and I’ve lived among diverse
cultures for a number of years. Best of all, I have a wonderful family,” said Jennifer.
Titusville Club
Our club members had a great month of October. The big event for the month was our
Fall Festival. The club members dressed up in their best spooky costumes and enjoyed
trick-or-treating around the backyard. We also had several carnival games such as ring
toss and bobbing for apples for them to participate in. The best part of the day was all of
the delicious food and treats that our members got to eat. A good time was had by all.
November is coming up fast and furious, and the year is coming to a close. However, we
still have some fun events happening at the Titusville Club. The weather will be cooling
down, so our members will be able to utilize the outside more. Our biggest event for
November is our Thanksgiving Celebration. Our club members will be able to eat a
tradition Thanksgiving Day meal with turkey and all the trimmings. This event is always
well attended and promotes fellowship and celebration among all. Our club members also
were able to participate in crafts and no bake activities that help celebrate fall and the
Thanksgiving Day harvest.
The Titusville Club would like to thank the Fraternal Order of Eagles (Titusville post) for
their generous grant for our facility. With this grant, we are able to do some facility
improvements to our club. We are really blessed to have support from community
organizations such as them.
If you or someone you know could benefit from our services at The Club, please stop by.
The address is 830 South Park Avenue, Titusville. We are here to help, please do not wait
until you are overwhelmed and stressed out. We would love to give you a tour and answer
any questions you may have.
Outreach and Speaking Engagements Would you like Brevard Alzheimer’s to come to your work, church, or place of business to speak about
Alzheimer’s Disease and the resources available through The Foundation? We find that most people
don’t know what is available to them, and in 2019, we aim to get the word out to as many citizens of
Brevard County as possible!
You can help!
If you have somewhere you would like us to speak, please call Tim Timmermann at 321-253-4430 and he would be
happy to set it up. The more people we can speak to, the more people that can receive services and help.
Project Relief
Project Relief had an excellent presentation from Theresa Russell with the Department of Children and Families Protective Service and their VIAL OF LIFE program. Each vial is a plastic bottle that can hold each family member's personal information stored in the refrigerator and/or cars. The personal information sheet contains medical history, blood type, contact information for guardian or family members and the name of physicians, pharmacy, health insurance, list of medications and even the number of pets and pet sitter details.
If an emergency occurs in a household or car accident, first responders can gather all details by reaching the VIAL OF LIFE and the emergency room staff and hospital can have the very most important information, quickly. Knowing the medicine allergies and list of medications in the vials are saving people's lives and by having a guardian and even pet sitter information things are made easier. This program is free and you would contact Theresa Russell 321-288-6684 for more information.

Melbourne Club
October was an incredible month with back-to-back celebrations. We began the month with
the renewal of vows for Stan and Jackie. The wedding service was beautiful, heartfelt, and for
everyone attending, brought tears to their eyes. This was a one of a kind celebration for Joe’s
Club, which gave an example of what’s to come!
Our next celebration was in accordance with Octoberfest, which was an excuse for the
Activity Director to wear his Lederhosen and to dance the polka to German music all day
long. The main event in October is, of course, a spooktacular Halloween extravaganza. We
began the day with a Halloween puppet show, members who did not dress up made their
own Halloween masks during crafts. Staff and clients dressed according to the Halloween
theme. Our members had a costume parade and the staff presented their costumes in front
of our members to vote on best costumes. We decorated the back garden area and set up
stations for our members to trick-or-treat for candy. Everyone had an amazing time and, of
course, overindulged on treats and candies. We’d like to give a special thank you to all our
volunteers and to all those caregivers who donated candy and goodies on this fun-filled day.
We will post photos in the next edition of the newsletter.
In November, we are very blessed this year to have a two-day Veterans Celebration to honor
our military members. We will have Bill Dodds on the trumpet performing Taps while The
Rolling Thunder group does a flag ceremony. They will then present certificates and pins to
our vets. We then have a patriotic performance by The Entertainers in the afternoon. Day
two is the Veterans Administration doing a presentation and a speech to our veterans in the
morning of the 12th followed by certificates and pins. We have gone above and beyond this
year to appreciate the freedom our veterans have fought for.
We give thanks, and this is the perfect month for that because our next big holiday is
Thanksgiving. Here at Joe’s Club that’s what it’s all about, giving thanks to our members,
staff, family members, caregivers and all those volunteers and entertainers who give their
time and dedication along with donations. All we can say from the bottom of our hearts is,
“Thank You!”
Micco Club We hope everyone had a great October. We had a lot of fun dressing up for our Halloween Parade and love seeing our members all dressed up too. Remember all Barefoot Bay residents that attend Joe’s Club receive free transportation and a special flat rate of just $20 a day for being Bay or Snug Harbor residents. November is here which means Turkey Day, shopping, and hopefully cooler weather. As a reminder, we will be closed the day of Thanksgiving 11/28/19 but will be open Friday 11/29/19. Every Friday we have musical entertainment, and the performers love playing to an audience. Make sure and mark your calendar for every Friday to get your weekend started right. We are having a Yard Sale on 11/16/19 to help raise money for our activities and crafts budget. Anybody can come and try out our facility as we offer one free day to all new interested parties. Don’t forget that if you are a Veteran, that uses the Viera Clinic as your primary care facility, you may be eligible to receive assistance to pay for your membership at Joe’s Club. We are actively seeking volunteers to come out and have fun with our club members. Joe’s Club has a fun, laid back atmosphere. Our clients love to socialize and interact with volunteers. We do many different activities to stimulate the minds of our clients, and are open to new ideas that you, as a volunteer, may bring to the table. At Joe’s Club we love music, so if you play any instruments or can sing we would love to have you perform for us.
