Hello Sheboygan County 4-H Families,
My name is Emilie Burkhardt, and I have the privilege of serving as the 2016 Sheboygan County 4-H
Summer Intern. I hope the school year has gone by quickly and you are all ready for a fun-packed
summer. If you are ever in the office or see me out and about, do not be afraid to stop and say
hello!
For those who do not know who I am, I grew up as a member of the Madison All-Stars 4-H Club out
of Sheboygan Falls for 10 years (12 if you include my time as a Cloverbud). When I was a member
within the Sheboygan County 4-H program, I served as an Ambassador as well as a member of the
Youth Association, and Leaders Association Executive Board. Some of my past 4-H experiences
have been attending different trips, such as the American Spirit, Citizenship Washington Focus, and
the National 4-H Youth Congress. I have also attended 4-H camp as a camper and a counselor,
and have plenty of memories from the fair.
Just a little bit more about me, I have an absolute love of baking, I love to travel and sit outside
when the weather is nice to read. Growing up in 4-H, I showed plenty of projects at the fair, but my
most memorable project would have been the poultry project, because of what I learned raising
chickens. I have just completed my sophomore year the UW-Stevens Point, majoring in
Communication Sciences and Disorders (specifically Speech-Language Pathology). Throughout this
past year, I served as a Community Advisor (CA) in a hall on campus, and will unfortunately not be
attending the fair this year due to training to become a Desk Manager (DM).
This summer I will be working on events such as Free Fishing Day, Cloverbud camp, STEM Day Camp
and many more! If you ever have any questions or would like to help out with a program feel free to
contact me at 920-459-5909 or email me at [email protected].
Brace yourselves… It’s going to be a fun-packed summer!
Emilie Burkhardt

GENERAL INFORMATION
LITERATURE SPRING CLEANING
Do you have project literature sitting somewhere on a shelf? If you do and it is not
being used, drop it off next time you're at the UW-Extension Office or give it to your
General Leader. Remember, there is a cost to this literature and with costs rising, we
need to make wiser use of our resources. Please, if you're not using it, return it so it can
be recycled. Thanks.
CRIER ARTICLE DEADLINES
In order for all of us to manage the complex layers that this important newsletter requires, we are asking
that you assist us! Please make sure to meet our new deadline for Crier content: noon on the 20th of the
month. Articles and edits can be sent directly to Victoria at [email protected]. This will
be managed as a FIRM deadline. Any articles that arrive either via e-mail or snail mail or verbally after
noon on the 20th WILL NOT be included in the upcoming calendar or crier.
We suggest designating a “point person” in your committee or group who will submit the Crier articles.
Our office staff will try to assist with this transition by sending reminders around the 10th and 15th of each
month. Thank you for helping us get this information to our members and families in a timely and
accurate way!
BREAKFAST ON THE FARM
Why not join us in celebrating June Dairy Month by inviting your family and friends to a wonderful time of
family fun on the farm! This year’s Breakfast on the Farm will be held Saturday, June 18th at Majestic
Crossing (The Meadows Site, N5853 Meadowlark Rd, Sheboygan Falls, WI 53085 – off of Hwy 23 in
Sheboygan Falls). Breakfast will be served from 7am – noon. Tickets are $7.00 for adults in advance -
$8.00 at the door and $3.00 for kids 3-6 yrs. old (both in advance, and at the door.) Not only will a
delicious breakfast be served, but there will be fun activities for the whole family to enjoy!

NEW AND EXCITING ADDITIONS
Have you done anything exciting in 4-H lately? Did your club do a Community Service Project that you
are proud of? Was there a project meeting that we should highlight? Did you take a 4-H trip
somewhere? Did you learn something new? If there is something you would like to share, send us your
pictures of 4-H events and we will do our best to highlight them in the Crier. Please send pictures to
Victoria at [email protected].
FRIEND OF 4-H AND MERITORIOUS AWARD
It’s never too early to start thinking about who you might nominate for our Sheboygan County 2016
Friend of 4-H and Meritorious Awards.
Each year we recognize an organization or individual who has made significant contributions to our 4-H
Program at the county level by positively impacting the goals of our program over time as our Friend of
4-H. We also recognize a certified 4-H leader on the club, county, or state level who has made
exceptional contributions to the Sheboygan County 4-H Program, going above and beyond what is
asked or expected.
Our 4-H Program is one of the strongest in the state, thanks to the excellent leaders and friends who
contribute so much of their time and talents to our programming. If you know someone who fits into one
of the above categories…please take time to nominate them before September 1, 2016. Nomination
forms are available at http://sheboygan.uwex.edu/award-applications.
***NEW*** CLOVER AWARD APPLICATION
The Leaders Association Executive Committee recently revised the Sheboygan County Clover Award
Application in order to bring it up to date and allow for more consistent reporting of activities. The
requirements for earning the five levels have not changed.
For club level activities, additional examples of activities were provided under each category. Also, the
“other” category was expanded to include items that are different from the categories listed or where
more space was needed (i.e. 4-H member participated in four community service projects with the
club, but there are only three spaces available). The “other” category can also include practices for
softball or Music & Drama Fest, provided that there was 75% minimum participation.
For county level activities, items that were related to countywide animal projects were deleted as were
activities that no longer exist. The Communication Arts Festival item allows for one point per category
entered (speech, photography, drawing, poster, etc.) Camp counselors can receive two points – one
for attending camp and one for participating in the counselor training.
4-H members may want to complete their Emerald Level once they are in high school so that it can be
included on college and scholarship applications as a high school activity.
A sample completed application is available on the website http://sheboygan.uwex.edu/award-
applications. If you have any questions regarding the application, ask your club leader or 4-H staff.
Anyone applying for a Clover Award in October 2016 must use this revised application!

FAIR NEWS
SHEBCO FAIR NEWS
NEW FOR 2016 – SICK/INJURED RULE: Junior Fair exhibitors may have a substitute show their exhibit(s) if
the exhibitor has a serious medical condition which prevents them from showing with the exception of
Showmanship Classes. However, the exhibitor must be present for judging. If the exhibitor is not able to
be present for judging, the entry will not be allowed to be judged. The decision to allow the substitution
will need to be approved by three superintendents and a fair board member by way of the Junior Fair
Exhibitor Substitution Form. Return signed form to the fair office before judging begins. Any deviation
from the above rules will be decided by three superintendents and a fair board member. If anyone is
found to have falsified their illness or injury they will not be allowed to show the following year.
YOU'RE INVITED... 2016 FAIREST OF THE FAIR GALA
4-H members – you and your family are cordially invited to attend the 2016 Fairest of the Fair Gala on
Monday, June 13th, 2016 at 7:00 pm. It will be held at Laack’s Ballroom in Johnsonville. Admission is FREE!
If you or a friend might be interested in running for the position of Fairest of the Fair sometime in the
future, this event is a great way to learn more and prepare. Enjoy the opportunity to meet the
candidates, hear their on-stage introductions and radio spots, and have fun watching some great 4-H
entertainment!

FAIR PROJECT PLANNING
As you work on your Fair Projects for the 2016 Fair, why not think about making a project that fairgoers
can enjoy! We usually ask fairgoers not to touch projects; however, several members have asked that
we have a specific area where projects can be “played” with. If you are interested in making a project
for fairgoers to try, please be sure to make it sturdy and durable. We will have a specific display area for
those projects that can be picked up, turned on and played with. If this interests you, there will be
information cards on judging day for you to complete.
FOODS AND NUTRITION FAIR ENTRY CHANGES
This year Foods and Nutrition project members will have the opportunity to enter fair projects in a variety
of cooking, baking and nutrition categories regardless of their level of experience in this project. You
may be enrolled in 4-H Projects Foods and Nutrition I, II, III, or higher but will be able to select any Fair
Category including Baked Foods; Main Dishes and More; Healthy Food Choices; No-Bake and other
Deserts; Snacks; Appetizers and Sides; Nonperishable Items; and Food Preservation. Of course judges will
expect your level of experience to be reflected in the choices you make (so regular chocolate chip
cookies may not be a great choice for someone who has been in the project for 3+ years). Please plan
accordingly as you practice and gain experience in the project over the rest of this year. The Junior Fair
Book will soon be available at http://www.shebcofair.com/JRFair/ .

ENTERING PROJECTS IN THE SHEBOYGAN COUNTY FAIR
Taking part in the Sheboygan County Fair is a real highlight of the 4-H year. It should be fun and educational! The

Junior Fair book, or Rules & Regulations.
A few exhibit hints are listed below. Remember to:

2. Enter exhibits only in the projects you are enrolled in this year. If there is more than one unit (or level), enter
under the unit you are enrolled in.
3. Exhibit only in the most advanced unit if you are enrolled in two units of the same project.
4. The standard poster size in almost all departments is 14” x 22”. Be sure to follow this rule, or your exhibit will be
penalized. Posters will be displayed in the Youth Building on clip hangers on poster racks. You might want to

as you prepare for judging day!
9. Be sure to enter Animal Showmanship as applicable.

4-H LEADERS ASSOCIATION MEMORIAL PROCESS
In the event that the Sheboygan County 4-H Leaders Association has knowledge of the death of a present or
past certified 4-H Leader, the Leaders Association will present a $25 donation to the family based on the following
criteria:
We ask that all 4-H Members, Parents and Leaders help us provide recognition in memory of loved ones
by notifying the 4-H Youth Development Support Staff of an individual who has passed away. Staff will confirm the
member or leaders role within the program and notify the Leaders Association Treasurer of appropriate action.
YOUTH & ADULT DELEGATES FOR THE 4-H FALL FORUM
Each year youth and adult leaders are sent to represent Sheboygan County at the WI 4-H Fall Forum. The
delegates learn about what is happening in 4-H at the state level, weigh in on important issues and elect the next
year’s Youth and Adult Leaders Council representatives. This is also a great event to bring your youth officer team
to for team and skill building!
This year the Fall Forum will be November 4-5 at the Green Lake Conference Center in Green Lake, WI. Youth or
adults interested in representing Sheboygan County at the Fall Forum are asked to contact the UW-Extension
Office by September 1st.

PREMISE ID FOR ANIMAL EXHIBITORS
All show bound animals are required to have a Premise Registration Number and will need to include
that number on their County Fair Entry Form. Asking for this information is part of the Wisconsin Premises
Registration Act which requires anyone who keeps, houses, or co-mingles livestock to register their
premises, effective November 1, 2005. A system with proper “trace back” and “trace forward”
capabilities provides timely response to minimize the economic impact in the event of an animal
disease outbreak. A database for Premises Registration is the foundation for a national animal ID trace
back system.
The following is a list of “Livestock” requiring a Premise ID:
Bovine (bison, cattle)
Equine (horses, donkeys, etc.)
Goats
Poultry
Captive Game Birds
Sheep
Swine
Fish (aquaculture farm)
Camelids (llamas, alpacas)
Not included: rabbits, mink, dogs & cats
If your animals are kept at your property, you need to apply for a premise id number. If your animals
are housed elsewhere, the premise owner should have applied for and received a premise number.
If you are still in need of receiving a premise number or have a number, but can’t find it, there are
two ways to register premises:
1. Go to www.wiid.org and click on the link for WLIC Premises Registration.
2. Call WLIC at 1-888-808-1910 to request a registration form.
For more information or are in need of additional information please contact UWEX at 459-5903.

clinicians that volunteered their time for you! The Betsy Rohde Memorial Mock and Fun Show were both
a great success. Thank you to the youth committee for all the hard work they put into organizing this, as

genius and look for an upcoming event we are always looking for your help! Visit our website, here:

open arena so we can get it to our treasurer, Lisa Schumacher. Remember, all the money raised goes
directly into the project that we all love!
Though there has been only a small amount of interest in having an English Drill Team, please contact
Wendi Schmid if you are interested in participating! We don’t want to see this disappear from the

DOG PROJECT NEWS
Lots of happenings in the Dog Project in June! First, our annual Walk-a-thon is on June 23. We’ll meet at
the Coliseum as usual for announcements, then go for our walk. There will be one route that will finish off
back at the fairgrounds. We’ll have a short training session following the walk. Prizes will be awarded to
those who raise the most money, so ask your family and friends to support our only fundraising event. It
helps pay for trophies, judges, equipment and other things we need to have a great year!
Our Fun Match is on Saturday, June 25, in the South Exhibit Hall at the Fairgrounds. Registration starts at 8
AM, judging begins at 9 AM. Fee varies with classes. Open to the public, so anyone can bring their dog
and take part. We’ll be offering a raffle with lots of great things for dogs and their people. It’s a good
practice for what you’ll have to do at the Fair and also counts toward your 10 training sessions. We’ll be
looking for volunteers for setup/takedown, ring stewards, and raffle monitors. Specific jobs will be
announced at training sessions and on FB.
State Dog Show will be July 29-31 in Lancaster, WI. Show book and entry forms available at training on
Thursday nights. Entries should be submitted to Sarah Britt or Katy Vergeront by June 9. When information
is available for the State Agility Show, August 27, sponsored by Eau Claire County, we will announce it.
As the weather warms up, remember to bring water for your dog and yourself. If the dog is unable to
train, the child should come anyway to observe class. One parent or guardian should plan to stay at the
training sessions. We don’t cancel for cold or rain, but if there are thunderstorms we may skip that
evening, since we train outdoors. Call 459-5908 and/or check the UW-Extension site for cancellation info.
The next Dog Board meeting will be Monday, June 20, 7:15 PM at the UW-Extension office. Find us on

PHOTOGRAPHY NEWS
Hello all! After a bit of a delay we are happy to announce our meeting schedule for the countywide
Photography Project. This year we will start off with an initial meeting going over general information on
the photography project, along with the basics of photography. Please bring your cameras along; we
will be going over the features of individual cameras in small groups with photographers from the
community who have graciously offered their assistance. We also encourage you to bring a printed
photo that you have taken. Our photographers will be happy to give you feedback on the strengths of
the photo and also possibly some ways to improve.
The first meeting will be on June 23rd, 2016 at UW-Extension. We are asking that youth up to grade 6
come from 6pm to 7:30 pm, and youth grade 6 and older come from 7:30 to 9 pm. This is to provide
one-on-one help to youth that have different skill sets so that we can give feedback and help for all
members of the photography project.
Our second meeting will be on July 21st at 6pm for all members. Please bring your camera and make
sure the battery is charged! We will be separating into small groups and rotating through stations,
featuring different types of photography such as landscape, sports action, a photo booth, etc.
Photographers from the community will teach and assist as you have the opportunity to take photos at
each station.
Please contact Erin O’Brien at 920-698-0968 or email [email protected] with any questions. Can’t wait
to see you there!
