As a new member of the Board of Directors of the Brentwood Chamber of Commerce, I am excited and honored by the opportunity to be part of the wonderful business community of Brentwood. Like every business person in Brentwood, I am very concerned for the future of our community. The recent past has been challenging, but the special lifestyle and culture in Brentwood is proving to be attractive, even in tough times. Community and culture is what Cortona Park Senior Living is all about. We are constantly looking for ways to enrich the lives of our residents by bringing local culture in, and bringing our community members out. Local dining, entertainment, and housing will continue to survive, and even thrive, if we all remember to think globally, but shop locally. Our community has so much to offer if we only keep our eyes open.

We’ve all heard the popular idea that the Chinese word for crisis incorporates symbols for danger and opportunity. A quick Google search leaves me unsure of the truth of this, but I still like the idea. If we let our fears be our only guide, we can miss the chance to improve our circumstances when the opportunity arises. Many individuals, families, and nations find that they come through a crisis stronger and healthier than ever. Don’t get me wrong, it won’t be easy. Having a little faith in our own hard work can make all the difference. And don’t forget to have a little fun once in a while.

The evening news can be pretty discouraging. Bad economy, wars, international neighbors facing real environmental catastrophe. Rather than “why me?” the real questions we should ask ourselves are “what can I do?” and “how can I help?” Every day is a new opportunity to make strides in the right direction. Each new stranger is another potential friend or business partner. Every interaction is a chance to celebrate life. Just remember to count your blessings.

Call your mom.
