Where are We? We’re almost there! Almost back in the Sanctuary/Nave/Church, whatever you want to call it. Quick lesson about our

building we call the Church. When you come in the front doors of the church, you enter the Narthex. The narthex is an

architectural element typical of early Christian and Byzantine basilicas and churches consisting of the entrance or lobby

area, located at the west end of the nave, opposite the church's main altar.

The portion of the church where the people sit is the Nave. The Nave, central and principal part of a Christian church,

extending from the entrance (the narthex) to the transepts (transverse aisle crossing the nave in front of the sanctuary

in a cruciform church) or, in the absence of transepts, to the chancel (area around the altar).

And the part of the building that many people call or refer to the whole building as “the Sanctuary” is really just the

part behind the Altar rail. The Sanctuary is the area at the front of the church where the altar and cross are located,

and the area around it that is usually raised. Also included are the priest’s chair and altar servers’ seats. Usually, but

not always, the lectern where the readings are proclaimed is within the sanctuary.

And in our church we have transepts. Transepts - in a cruciform church, these would correspond with the horizontal

beam of the Cross. These often contain side altars or chapels. Our St. Luke’s Chapel is in the South Transept and our

new antiphonal organ will be in the North Transept. An Antiphonal organ is placed in a location at some distance from

the rest of the organ, usually at the opposite end of the building or room. It is usually designed as a complement to the

main organ.

So what is “the Church?” That’s the easiest to de-

fine. YOU are “the Church.” God’s people, you and

I are what makes the church exist. The church is

the regenerate people of God saved by the saving

grace and mercy of Jesus Christ.

I look forward to seeing you, the Church, all back in

the “Narthex, Nave, and Sanctuary” very soon! But

for now, I look forward to seeing everyone in the

Parish Hall for the next couple of weeks. (What’s a

Parish Hall? – an article for another time.)

Blessings,

School News – by Dr. Sherry Durham

Therefore encourage one another and build each other up as you are already do-

ing. – 1 Thessalonians 5:11

Growing young people who are compassionate and caring is one of the goals of

St. Cyprian’s Episcopal School. Our spelling bee teams worked hard to prepare

themselves and their teams for competition in the local Scripps Spelling Bee. The

elementary team made up of second graders came in second place to a fifth

grade team while our middle school team made up of 6th graders also came in

second place to an eighth grade team. Our individual speller placed in third place

after a formidable competition. My point in this matter is that all of these chil-

dren are winners. They prepared themselves with practice at home and after

school including hours spent studying word meanings and etymology. All along

the way encouraging one another and building each other up. This is walking as

lions. This is what our school seeks to accomplish.

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper March 5th, 6pm, Parish Hall Pancake Supper! Pancakes, bacon and sausage for all! What more needs to

be said? There will also be craft activities for the children. Shrove Tuesday is

commonly a time for celebration and feasting before fasting during the Len-

ten season when restrictive eating of food such as meat, fats, eggs, and milk

is practiced. Harkening back to the Middle Ages, we “clear our pantries” of

these foods by consuming them at a feast.

Lenten Wednesdays Wednesdays during Lent offer us an opportunity to gather as a parish to

share a meal and deepen our faith. Each Wednesday begins at 6pm in the

Parish Hall with a potluck meal, after which the children and youth separate

to their own studies and activities. Fr. Ralph will be teaching on the prayer

book each Wednesday except for when the Bishop comes for Confirmation

on April 3rd. Come and grow in your faith during this very special spiritual

season!

March 13th – Italian Potluck

March 20th – Mexican-themed Potluck

March 27th – Your Favorites Dishes Potluck

April 3rd – Confirmation Dinner with Bishop Hector Monterroso – The

church will provide fried chicken for the meal. Please bring side dishes

and desserts. Dinner will be at 6pm, followed by the Confirmation ser-

vice at 7pm, then a dessert reception for the new confirmands.

April 10th – Mom’s Best! – Bring a beloved dish that your mother (or father) passed down to you. Be prepared

to tell the story behind the recipe!

Music Notes by Greg Simmons, Music Director There is certainly a lot of activity around our campus! So much work is being

done by so many different people for the betterment of our church grounds,

facilities, and ministries. This church is full of hard-workers and generous-

givers, together there is not much that we could not accomplish together!

Within the next few weeks our new friend (the organ) will be up and running!

Ready to aid us in our worship, outreach, and ministry. This instrument is a

testament to the hard work of each and every parishioner. Something like this

couldn’t happen without a parish like ours.

I hope in the next few weeks you will come to see and hear our new friend.

She wants to get to know you, since she will be spending many, many genera-

tions with you, and I hope you will take the time to get to know her as well.

Lent Madness 2019

Lent Madness began in 2010 as a fun, engaging way for people to learn about the men and

women comprising the Church’s Calendar of Saints in a unique Lenten devotion. The format is

straightforward: 32 saints are placed into a tournament-like single elimination bracket. Each

pairing remains open for a set period of time and people vote for their favorite saint. The con-

test creates an online community of people who are passionate about taking their faith but

not themselves too seriously. Articles and spots about Lent Madness have appeared in

the Washington Post, NPR, Huffington Post, FOX News, NBC, USA Today, and even Sports Illus-

trated.

As Lent Madness continues to grow and evolve, what won’t change is the essence of Lent

Madness: allowing people to get to know some amazing people who have come before us in

the faith and reminding one another that there’s no reason for a dreary Lenten discipline. If this helps people con-

nect with the risen Christ during this season of penitence and renewal, and have a bit of fun in the process, then it

continues to be worthwhile.

Go to www.lentmadness.org to read about the saints, inspect the bracket and vote for your favorites!

Making a Child Go To Church Recently, a mother asked me, “Should I make my son go to church?” I answered, “Yes, definitely.” Then I explained:

“What do you say when your son decides that he does not want to go to school? What did you do when he was little

and did not want to take a bath: How did you react when he was sick and did not want his medicine?”

Every right-thinking parent recognizes the importance of these matters and gives the child no opportunity to decide

for himself. Instead, parents explain the importance of going to school, taking a bath, or taking medicine when sick.

So, mom and dad, take time to explain the importance of going to church; then simply say to your son or daughter;

“In our family we all go to church and that includes you.” – Author Unknown

“Train up a child in the way he should go…” (Prov. 22:6)

All youth activities are coordinated by our Director of Youth Ministries, Jordan Dietz, [email protected].

We are excited to announce that we have officially set our dates for both the

Jr. High Mission Trip and the Sr. High Mission Trip!

Jr. High Trip— July 21-27 This trip is for students who have completed their 6th grade year, up to 8th grade. We will travel to Houston to

participate in Episcopal Strong. This organization was started last year by The Diocese of Texas in their efforts to

help with Hurricane Harvey relief. It is a week-long trip in which Episcopal youth groups from all over the country

come together to take part in this mission opportunity. There will be nearly 300 students working to get people

back on their feet and under a roof. We will be doing everything from homeless work, to minor construction, to

cleaning and clearing. It will definitely be a spirit-filled week. Please keep us in your prayers that week.

Sr. High—June 15-23

This trip is for students who have completed their freshman year of high school to senior year of high school. We

will be traveling to Conway, South Carolina. Working with The Diocese of South Carolina, we will be doing a lot of

construction work to help with their hurricane disaster relief. Because the drive is so long, we will be stopping in

Alabama for one night, to split the drive into two days instead of one long day. We hope that you will keep us in

your prayers for a safe trip.

Ash Wednesday Services

Wednesday, March 6th

7am — Readings, Ashes, Abbreviated Eucharist 7:30am to 8:30am – Ashes, Drive-by at School

7pm – Eucharist with Ashes

Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, a season where Christians work to turn again to-

ward God, preparing to observe Christ’s death and resurrection on Easter. When we are

marked with ashes on Ash Wednesday, we remember our own limitations and brokenness

and the healing and love that God offers us. Ash Wednesday services are typically solemn

and quiet. You will hear readings from Scripture and share in ancient prayers. You will

have the option to receive the mark of ashes in the sign of a cross on your forehead.
