Yes, its that time again Virginia,
there really will be a Cornfest 2010. We got our final City approvals last night and we're full speed ahead. We will have 7 blocks of Fun, Food, and Entertainment, stretching down 1st
Street from Pine to Chestnut and the adjacent side streets. In addition The Carnival will be situated on Liberty Adult Ed property on the north side of Pine Street.
For the first time, the Downtown Merchants will be INSIDE the event and most are planning on being open. In addition to standard Festival Fare, you will be able to dine and relax indoors at the Local Restaurants and watering holes. (You may want to make reservations early) If you’re not familiar with downtown, this will be a great opportunity to also shop in the numerous shops along these streets.
This event wouldn't be possible without the many hours put in by the hundreds of volunteers, so please tell them thank you whenever you have the opportunity. Also, a big thanks to the tremendous support of City Staff and City Council in helping us get through all of the hoops that we have negotiated in the last year in getting this put together.
Last, and certainly not least, THANK YOU to all of the affected Merchants and Residents, whose support we greatly appreciate.
PLEASE, come early, stay late and HAVE A GOOD TIME!!!!!!!!!!! (Don't forget the fireworks on Friday Night!!!!!!!!!)

Ambassador's Corner Every business has a 30 second elevator speech but do you have the knowledge and
experience to back it up? Part of the experience is knowing what you can do for others. Business cannot be just me, me, and me. In a world with such great social media we forget the human factor. The ability to establish both a personal and business relationship cannot be undersold. The opportunity to step up and say with confidence “call this person- business” is an awesome feeling. Someone else can promote your business greater than you can. When your customer or business associate tells of your product, knowledge, or
business sense it’s a done deal. The business friendship that I have established through the Brentwood Chamber of Commerce has given me these opportunities.
I am a believer in the integrity of those businessmen and women that I deal with every day. When your word and a handshake still mean honesty, you are a privileged business owner. With these friendships we can get through any obstacle. Many of the businesses with the Chamber have years of experience that you can bounce ideas off of. I have never had anyone from the Chamber not more than willing to discuss ideas with me. I also go over ideas with businesses in the area that have the same business. I have established friendships with my competitors. I have an awesome customer base and know that there is plenty of work to go around.
Jeff Hall with the California Small Business Development Center taught me “Collective Intelligence”. What an idea! When you get a room full of business owners together, the wonderful things that you can accomplish are boundless.
I would like to thank you for sharing your business knowledge with me and allowing me to share it with others. Remember knowledge is a treasure that should be shared.
Thank you,
Kerri Fritsch

Fostering new businesses is the most effective tool that government has to boost local economic growth (U.S. Small Business Administration February 2007). “We want to make Brentwood a great place to start a new business,” says Hazel Wetherford, Community Development Department for City of Brentwood. But that‟s just the beginning.
There‟s information on training provided by the regional Small Business Development Center and others, and over 75 online classes available to help start and grow your business.
The Government Requirements kit has forms and simplified instructions that businesses need throughout the year.

Buchanan Honors Small Business Owner
SACRAMENTO - Assembly Member Joan Buchanan (D-Alamo) joined with
other members of the California Legislature and the California Small Business
Association to honor Jim Wangeman, owner of Harvest Park Bowl, as the
Small Business Owner of the Year in Assembly District 15 at an event held
today in Sacramento.
“I am delighted to recognize Jim Wangeman” said Buchanan.
“Through his hard work and commitment to civic engagement, Harvest Park
Bowl is an example of what small businesses means to the local economy.”
Harvest Park Bowl in Brentwood hosts a regular program of bowling events and has donated over
21,000 free bowling games during the summer months for local youth. Since 1997, Jim Wangeman, has
created numerous community partnerships with local organizations and non-profits, donating $170, 000 in
scholarships. Jim has served 13 years on the Board of Directors of Sutter Delta Hospital, 7 years as Vice
President of REACH program, and is a member of the Brentwood Rotary Club. In addition, Jim has served
on the Board of Directors of California Bowling Proprietors and as Pacific Coast Regional Director of
National Bowling Proprietors Association of America.
Buchanan continued, “California Small Business Day is an opportunity to acknowledge small business
owners who comprise almost 98% of all businesses in the state, providing the majority of private sector jobs
and almost three-fourths of our gross state product. Our small businesses are the backbone of our state’s
economy and I am committed to doing all I can to support them.”

The Spring Taste of Downtown Brentwood Restaurant Tour was a huge success with selling over 200 tickets. We could not have asked for more beautiful weather, sun shining with just a light breeze. Everyone had a great time walking all over Downtown visiting shops and Restaurants that they had never realized were there. At the end of the Tour everyone had a chance to enter into a drawing for a $100 cash prize with the winner being a resident of Brentwood, Debbie Henry. The Brentwood Chamber wants to Thank the Kiwanis Club, participants and all the Restaurants for making this event one of the best events this year.
The Brentwood Chamber would like to Congratulate Debbie Henry, above, for
winning the $100 cash prize from the Tour.

Story Ideas for Your July 2010 Newsletter
Following are stories the California Chamber of Commerce recommends you consider for use in your July 2010 newsletter: Note: Update the following story to note that 30 “job killers” remain alive following the June 4 dead-line for legislation to pass the house in which it was introduced. CalChamber Releases 2010 ‘Job Killer’ List; 37 Bills Threaten State’s Recovery The California Chamber of Commerce this week released its annual list of “job killer” bills, calling attention to the negative impact the proposed measures would have on California‟s competitiveness and job climate if they were to become law.
CalChamber-Backed Change in Primary Wins Approval Proposition 14, the California Chamber of Commerce-supported measure to increase the right to participate in primary elections, won with strong support of California voters this week.
Note: If the 2010-11 budget has not been approved by the time you publish your July newsletter, the following analysis will remain valid. Be sure to include a note that the analysis was published on May 28 so readers understand some of the time references. Analysis: Deficit Spending, Tax Hikes in Latest Budget Proposals Governor, Republicans Urge Reforms, No New Taxes The state budget, taxes and massive new debt have emerged at the top of the Legislature‟s agenda this month. Some wonder how the Legislature could have been working on any issues other than jobs, the economy and the budget, given the gravity of the fiscal problem. But making up for lost time, legislative leaders have laid on the table billions in new taxes and added a stunning proposal for new deficit spending into the mix.
Webinar on Demand Outlines Health Care Law Impact on Business To help employers understand the impact of the federal health care reform law, the California Chamber of Commerce recently conducted a webinar on the subject. The 90-minute session, What Health Care Reform Means to Your Business, is available now as a webinar on demand.

What does the Health Care Reform Law mean to your business,
to you, and your family?
The Chamber has received a number of outlines regarding the two Health Care Bills. We have started a binder of information that the office has received and we are providing you links to some of the information and links to our two Congressional Offices that have links to information on the Health Care Legislation. Some of the Health Reform Laws go into affect right away and some do not go into effect until 2014. The Chamber office has received many inquiries on this subject and hopes this will help answer some of those questions. As more information arrives we will add that information to our Health Care portfolio. See the links below:
