Ever thought about how water gets to your place? Currently, Sydney’s water demands are met by building dams in remote places and praying that it rains. The water collected is treated to drinking standard, pumped 68 kilometres to the city, yet only two per cent of that water actually wets our collective lips. Even after taking into account other uses for water, like food preparation, showering and bathing, less than a fifth of water used at home needs to be of drinking quantity. The current set up is inefficient, unsustainable and highly vulnerable to climate change – and it needs to change. Enter the City’s Decentralised Water Master Plan. Our proposed decentralised water system will source water locally. This local water will be treated and distributed via separate purple pipes that will sit alongside the current water network. And the best bit? This local water will only be used for non-drinking purposes like watering gardens, parks and flushing toilets – saving our precious drinking water, for well, drinking!

Reduce 10% of water demand within the City of Sydney through water efficiency programs, by 2030. Reduce 10% of water demand through water efficiency measures in City of Sydney owned buildings including community facilities, parks, gardens, playing fields and landmarks like Sydney Town Hall.
Replace 30% of water demand within the City of Sydney, with recycled water for non-drinking purposes only, by 2030. This target will be achieved by a combination of City of Sydney investment and state and federal government partnerships.
Reduce 50% of stormwater pollution by 2030, using water sensitive urban design, such as raingardens, green roofs or swales to filter and slow-down water run-off to Botany Bay and Sydney Harbour.
