The Circulatory System: Parts of the HeartHuman Bio 11
Parts of the Heart
The heart has two separate pumps that work simultaneously.
Right Side: ◦Collects oxygen-poor blood from the body and
pumps it to the lungs.
Left Side: ◦Collects oxygen-rich blood from the lungs and
pumps it to the body.
Parts of the Heart
The septum divides the right and left sides.
It prevents the mixing of oxygen-poor and oxygen-rich blood.
Parts of the Heart
Superior Vena Cava: ◦Large vein◦Brings oxygen-poor blood from the upper
part of the body to the right atrium.
Inferior Vena Cava: ◦Large vein◦Brings oxygen-poor blood from the lower
part of the body to the right atrium.
Parts of the Heart
Right Atrium: ◦Collects the blood from the body and
sends it to the right ventricle.
Right Ventricle: ◦Receives blood from the atrium and
sends it to the pulmonary arteries.
Parts of the Heart
Pulmonary Arteries: ◦Only arteries that carry oxygen-poor
blood.◦Send blood to the lungs.
Parts of the Heart
Pulmonary Veins: ◦Only veins that carry oxygen-rich
blood. ◦Send blood to the left atrium.
Parts of the Heart
Left Atrium: ◦Collect the blood from the lungs and
sends it to the left ventricle.
Left Ventricle: ◦Largest chamber. ◦Receives blood from the left atrium and
sends it to the aorta.
Parts of the Heart
Aorta:◦Brings oxygen-rich blood from the left
ventricle to the body.
Parts of the Heart
Valves stop the blood from flowing back in the wrong direction.
Tricuspid Valve:◦Between the right atrium and right
ventricle.
Bicuspid Valve:◦Between the left atrium and left
ventricle.
