Un-gym the Gym

Question: What do you do with a temporary

worship space?

Answer: You make it the best temporary worship

space that you can.

You may remember the story of the Exodus and

how the Hebrews made their way from Egypt to the

Promised Land. It took them 40 years to get there,

but that is primarily because they often struggled

with following God. During their time of

wandering in the wilderness, God instructed them to

build a tent for worship. In fact, God gave them

very specific instructions on how to build this

portable, temporary tabernacle, complete with

specific dimensions, specific material, specific

procedures. This was important, because even

though it was a temporary worship space, the glory

of God dwelt in that tent.

I know what you’re thinking. Why? If they

were eventually going to arrive in the Promised

Land and build a brand new temple to worship in,

then why invest time and resources into a temporary

worship space? (If you really were thinking about

that question, please go back to the first two lines of

this article and begin again).

When I arrived at Jerome in the summer of 2010,

I spent the first five months holding cottage

meetings and listening to what this congregation felt

needed to be done. One of the things I heard over

and over again was the need to update the worship

space for the 10:45 service. Many folks

communicated it this way: “We need to un-gym the

gym.” This idea was reinforced by your feedback

in the building study survey from early 2012.

Over the last year, I have led a specially formed

task force to explore the needs and options for

making this temporary worship space the best that it

can be. I am pleased to say that in June 2012, the

Administrative Council approved the

recommendations of this task force.

In the next few months, you will begin to see

noticeable improvements to the temporary worship

space used by the 10:45 service. We will be

working hard to un-gym the gym. It is exciting to

see how we can make this the best temporary

worship space that we can . . . all for the glory of

God.

WE HAD POWER IN THE BLOOD!

Thank you to everyone who came to give blood

on July 14. We had a goal of 21 units and 23 were

collected, which have the potential of helping 69

people in need. That is huge. Also, thank you to

Marie Clark and Mary Henderlong, who helped

register and serve donors.

Our next drive will be November 17, when we

have the blood battle with Hilliard UMC. Please

save that date on your calendar and I'll look forward

to seeing you then.

MISSIONS COMMITTEE

Honduras Mission Trip The Honduras mission trip for 2013 has been put

on hold. The Pastor Dago Irias family, who led the

church and Total Home/Total Health in La Ceiba, is

being transferred to another church in another Latin

American country. They will continue to work with

the Church of the Grand Commission of Latin

America. In March of this year, the family received

an extortion threat and decided to leave Honduras,

rather than ignore the threat and maybe endanger

family members. In addition to the loss of the

administration of Total Home in Honduras, the head

of Total Home in Ohio, Gary Alexander, has also

resigned. Gary has moved to New Mexico to be

with grandkids. Dr. Jay Martin, who leads Total

Health here in Central Ohio, will head up Total

Home for the present time, while they look for

someone else to lead Total Home, both in Ohio and

La Ceiba. Dr. Martin will not have time to

coordinate Total Home mission trips. Total Home

will also need to hire coordinators in La Ceiba. The

Church of the Grand Commission in La Ceiba is

still very active and is led by Dago’s associate

pastors, Rossel Medina and Fredi Mejia. The Total

Health Clinic is operational and sees patients every

day. Melissa Ruble, the missionary who spoke

earlier this year at our church, is on the way to La

Ceiba and is probably there as you read this. The

church in La Ceiba is still building homes, but using

mission teams from other Churches of the Grand

Commission. Let us continue to keep the people of

Honduras in our prayers and also pray that Total

Home can resume home building mission trips to La

Ceiba in the near future. If you have any questions

about the Total Home mission trips to Honduras,

please contact Charlie Bynner.

Habitat for Humanity Golf for Habitat is a fundraising event for our

next Dublin Habitat Partnership house build, which

will occur late summer or early fall. This event is a

4-person scramble. The cost is $65 per golfer and

includes 18 holes of golf, cart, lunch, on-course

contests, "skins" game & raffle ticket for prizes.

Beverages are available on the course. $5 mulligans

are for sale. If you are not interested in golfing, but

would like to support this event, you may also

sponsor a hole for $150. Golfing starts with a

Soup for the Soul If you can provide a pot of soup, lunch meat,

cheese, fruit, drinks, desserts or any food item on a

regular or occasional basis, please contact the

Music ministry Marlene Meyers - Director of Music

[email protected]

Unexpected “flash mob” musical performances

have sprung up in public places such as airports and

malls. Philadelphia’s 600-member Opera Company

scattered among Macy’s crowds and broke out in

the “Hallelujah chorus”. A university choir did the

same at a Fargo, North Dakota, food court. Groups

have also performed impromptu renditions of

“Silent Night,” “Amazing Grace” and well-known

secular songs.

These events have been called “random acts of

culture,” but they might better be called “purposeful

acts of God.” Through music, we can praise God

anywhere. Whenever Christ’s disciples move

beyond church buildings to share the gospel, God is

surely at work. God is surely at work here at

Jerome. I continue to be a witness to your love for

Christ as I see your willingness to serve not only

through music, but also in so many other ministries.

I see how you serve others in our community, for

example, our Youth Director, Denise Gorden’s

leadership with the Mountain T.O.P. mission trip

and most recently, Faith Ranch.

In our worship services for August, we continue

to hear the stirring music provided by the Praise

Band at the 10:45 contemporary service. At the

8:30 traditional service, we continue to hear our

talented musicians who sing and play instruments.

On Sunday, August 5, we will be blessed with our

own Men’s Ensemble. You won’t want to miss

this!

Donna Montgomery, our Children’s Director,

has been busy preparing for our VBS. This is a

great outreach for us. Bring your neighborhood

children for evenings of fun and learning about

Christ. I am excited to be teaching songs to our

children. Working with children is such a joyful

experience!

We are coming upon the “dog days” of summer.

I already see ads for back-to-school supplies. Our

Page 4: The CircuiT RideRjeromechurch.org/hp_wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/newsle… · Leslie Herchline CHURCH ON WHEELS One of our Arm's Length Congregation is celebrating a birthday

choirs will resume their rehearsals after Labor Day.

In the meantime, thanks to all of you who have

blessed us this summer at the traditional services

with your musical talents - namely: Carol

Kauffman, Julie Gossard, Kathleen Smart, Julie

Stevens, Brian Stevens, Hannah Stevens, Dan

Stevens, Jon Kundtz, Roger Gorden, Sue Bynner,

Joe Sullivan, Bethany Cady, Emma Anderson and

Mark Meyers.

The Praise Band has been singing one of the big

hits right now on the contemporary Christian charts,

“10,000 Reasons” and it’s about having 10,000

reasons to bless the Lord for all that he has done for

us! I don’t know about you, but I know that God

has given me at least a billion plus reasons to thank

him for what he has done for me. How about you?

Think about it and take the time to praise God right

now! Amen!

Mid-week

ALPHA The Alpha Course is coming to Jerome! Alpha is

a ten-week experience that is designed for people of

all stages of their faith journey to explore the

meaning and purpose of life. Anyone can participate

and people from all backgrounds, religions, and

viewpoints attend. They come to investigate

questions about the existence of God, the purpose of

life, the afterlife, the claims of Jesus and more.

Some people want to get beyond religion and find a

relationship with God that really changes life.

Others come for the close, long-lasting friendships

that are built during the Alpha course.

This would be a great experience if you are new

to the church, if you have friends, family, or

neighbors who do not have a church home and want

to explore basic Christian beliefs, or if you want to

simply refresh you own faith in God. Under Pastor

Dave’s leadership, we will structure our Alpha

books. He invites you to consider the incredible

potential that awaits you outside your comfort zone.

Out on the risky waters of faith, Jesus is waiting to

meet you in ways that will change you forever,

deepening your character and your trust in God. The

experience is terrifying. It's thrilling beyond belief.

It's everything you'd expect of someone worthy to

be called Lord. Each week, Dr. Ortberg speaks to

us using a unique and exciting video. Each class

will have lively discussion and activities. The six-

week series is led by Pastor Roger and will meet in

room 105D on Tuesdays, beginning September 18th

and ending October 23rd. Those attending each

week have the option to attend either the Tuesday

10:00 a.m. class or the 7:00 p.m. class the same day

who are two years old and are potty trained can transition to Preschool Children’s Worship throughout the year

as parents and teachers agree they are ready.

TWIST IS COMING SOON People like TWIST because it is a time to build relationships with other families while they experience mission

projects together. It is a time of weaving our families together with fellowship, faith, and fun. Twist begins on

October 3 and will meet the first and third Wednesday of each month. Twist includes a meal, music, service

projects, games, and Bible Study Devotional for families with preschool and elementary children. The cost is

$3 per meal (children 3 and under are free).

WAYS TO SERVE AT KIDCONNECTIONS

VBS PRAYER PARTNERS We are looking for people to pray for the children and leaders during VBS hours. We know that it is only

through God’s hand that Vacation Bible School can be effective. Some of the things you can pray for include:

Kids learn to trust God.

Kids understand that they play an important role in the church.

We see an average of at least 80 people a day.

We see at least 50% of the children who attend JUMC regularly bring a friend.

We are asking for people to commit to prayer during a specific time slot during VBS. We believe that having

prayer partners at the Community VBS in June was a large reason why God blessed us with a life-changing

week for so many children. Volunteers may pray at whatever location they choose (home, work, church, etc.)

You can select a time slot at the bulletin board in the narthex or by contacting Donna Montgomery (614-873-

8483 or [email protected])

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL We still need volunteers for VBS…mostly Crew Leaders, who lead a small group of children from station to

station. Contact Donna Montgomery (614) 873-8483 or Marla Anderson ([email protected]) or sign up

on the church website if you'd like to help with Vacation Bible School this year.

SERMONS AVAILABLE ONLINE The audio version of the Sermon is posted each week on the church website: www.jeromechurch.org/sermon.

Teachers and Shepherds can hear the message each week after serving in the classroom. Those interested may

subscribe to the weekly podcast.

CHILDREN’S WORSHIP – Teachers Needed We really need more people who would like to teach Children’s Worship. The commitment for 2012/2013

school year is once a month for nursery and preschool/Kindergarten. Elementary classes are taught by

monthly units and we are asking for teachers and shepherds who can teach one or more units …. Teach for just

one month or choose several. A background check is required for all adult leaders. Contact Children’s

Minister, Donna Montgomery at (614) 873-8483 or [email protected] for more information.

follow Him (following Jesus’ words from Mark 12:30-31). We have a wonderful team of teachers and

shepherds who are committed to seeing our children grow up in their faith. Saying yes does not require a

lifetime commitment. We will ask you each Spring what your desire is for the following fall. If you are

interested in information or you want to join the team, please contact Donna Montgomery.

THANK YOU…

…Rob & Sara Meriweather and Brent & Michelle Blackburn for opening up their homes for a summer

…Erin Marr who opened up her home for the KidConnections Dream Team to meet in July.

…KidConnections Leaders who teach or shepherd in the Nursery, Preschool/Kindergarten, and Elementary

Children’s Church.

…Thank you to everyone who prays for the children and leaders at Jerome.

KidConnections, Connecting Kids to Christ and Christian Community. Our hope is to help children know how

awesome it is to have a personal relationship with the all-knowing, all-loving, all-powerful one and only true

God through Jesus Christ. We want to help develop a love for God, a love for others, a love for His Word and a

desire to follow Him. (Mark 12:30-31)

designated as “Change the World Sunday”. The

gold buckets are passed during the offering and all

monies placed in that bucket will help with

expenses for next year’s Mountain T.O.P. mission

trip. This money helps cover gas, hotel, food, and

jar” at your home. Fill it with your loose change

and bring the change to church the first Sunday of

every month to support this very special youth

mission!

blends perfectly on my gray couch. I have received

numerous compliments on it!

DUBLIN FOOD PANTRY The Dublin Food Pantry is in desperate need for

substitute drivers to pick up items from grocery

stores, bakeries, and restaurants on Mondays and

Tuesdays. This is about a 60-90 minute time frame

and the maximum weight a volunteer would need to

lift is 20 pounds (bag of potatoes).

The Pantry is also in need of a volunteer to work

in the office on Mondays or Tuesdays,

approximately 8 hours a week. Jobs would include

filing and computer input.

Please contact Susan Reed,

[email protected], if you would like to help.
