The Circle was conceived and founded in 2008 by singer-songwriter and campaigner Annie Lennox, as a vehicle to connect resourced and influential women to projects supporting the lives of women and girls in the developing world.

The Circle is a creative, high profile association of influential women who share a passionate interest in the lives, needs and rights of women and girls in all global communities. We campaign against global policies that marginalise women, raise funds to support women’s rights and back women’s groups who are already doing exceptional jobs, taking their local change to a global level and adding political influence to their courage.

We have collectively supported thousands of women and girls in the global south and we work to make positive changes to their lives.

THE CIRCLE PRESENTS AT THE MANGO TREEPROJECTS we are supporting tonight

Ending violence against women in India

Violence against women is not only the most common form of human rights violation in India it also faces a high social acceptance. This social acceptance of violence against women, coupled with a lack of knowledge of the legal justice system and stigma attached to going to the police station, prevents many women from reporting cases to the police. The demand for support such as safe shelters, medical care and financial assistance remains large.

Oxfam is working with the Institute for Social Development in India to challenge the belief that violence against women is acceptable, working in the tribal Adivasi communities in the states of Chhattisgarh and Odisha where some of the most marginalised communities in India live. We will identify and support women in villages to establish vigilance groups to address cases of violence against women in tribal communities.

We will also raise awareness of the issue in villages through posters, songs, folk art and theatre. We shall establish two women support centres at police stations, each with a trained female staff member to provide counselling, legal aid, medical support and shelter. Oxfam will also provide technical assistance to the government, the police and judiciary to help them apply the laws that protect women.

Ending violence against women in Uganda

Despite the government’s commitment to equality, women across Uganda still face widespread discrimination, abuse, violence and even rape. Domestic violence affects a staggering 60% of Ugandan women, and they are still prevented from owning land and other assets.

Oxfam is improving women’s lives by challenging the cultural practices that discriminate against women, and influencing the laws to support women’s rights. In particular, Oxfam will boost

women’s confidence to speak out by raising awareness of their rights; work with women and men to challenge inequalities; as well as changing community attitudes towards women and reducing domestic violence by backing the reform of pro-women laws. With your support, Oxfam can work towards ending violence against women in Uganda for good, while helping to create a more equal and fair society for all.

A Buddha in revolutionary Fluid Art, by Ganesh Bhat

The Atria Gallery has kindly donated this beautiful pensive Buddha by the famous sculptor Ganesh Bhat, specialist in Indian traditional style stone carvings, one of the richest traditions in India coming from the 7th century BC.

Sculpted in three pieces, the serene face of this grey-black granite Buddha, a universal symbol of peace is presented as revolutionary Fluid Art. It can be combined with two meditative hands entwined – a meditative stance; or a hand raised in blessing, the other humbly pointing downward; or both hands raised in an urge for calm. The sculpture can be mounted on a wall or casing to suit the art lovers’ tastes.

Atria. Traditional values, modern context

We bring investment art, artefacts and collectibles from across the Indian Sub-continent under one canopy from an array of artists and craft-persons. Whether you are a seasoned collector or looking to make your first purchase there is truly something for everyone.

The vision for a globally collaborative network which is Atria today was seeded when the founders Amita Shankar and Neetika Garg began to bring affordable art from India several years ago- building on their passion for Indian heritage and contemporary art and wanting to see its popularity in the modern day.

“The Fluidity of Art and its relevance to the beholder is my singular mission,” says Shri Ganesh Bhat “Art should be adaptable to the beholder’s palate!”
