The Mediterranean Laboratory in Economic and Social Sciences (LAMES) of the CIHEAM-MAIM conducts specialized or applied research on the following three topics: Agriculture, Food and Sustainable Development. It deals with agricultural and food policies, social choices and markets, the strategies of actors in the food processing sector, sustainable rural development, sustainable food, food safety and natural resources management. It is involved in projects financed by the European Union, the National Research Agency or even by multilateral and bilateral cooperation fund. This laboratory takes part in the local research cluster, the international Agropolis campus in Montpellier, through Joint Research Units (UMR) such as UMR MOISA, UMR SYSTEM and

UMR GRED. Moreover, it is an instrument for cooperation thanks to the close connections it maintains with institutions in the

South and East of the Mediterranean. Every year, it welcomes 30 to 50 PhD students coming from the Mediterranean area, for permanent or short stays.

Research & PhD Plateform Education & TrainingMaster of Science degree - ISO 9001 certified

The CIHEAM-MAIM provides two degrees: a Master 2 degree (Bac+5) and a Master of Science degree (Bac+6) on the following fields: 1. Territorial Develop-ment and Projects; 2. Agricultural Management and Territories; 3. Economics and Management of the Agricultural, Food and Rural Development; 4. Food Value Chains and Agro-logistics. The modular teaching system applies the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). Some of its Master degrees (M2) are co-accredited with universities of Montpellier and SupAgro, thus facilitating the access to PhD studies. Some new international Master Degrees are also provided, in particular with Lebanon. The Institute adheres to the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education 2014-2020.

Continuous professional trainingThe CIHEAM-MAIM offers training programmes adapted to the needs of both individuals and organizations through tailored training contents and flexible teaching methods. Each course unit constituting our Masters programmes can be followed “à la carte”. We also offer personalized itineraries (short trainings), based on an analysis of the trainee’s needs and professional requirements. Furthermore the Institute can also provide support in pedagogical engineering to training institutions by helping them draw out their educational engineering, as well as the design and implementation of their training curricula.

The CIHEAM-MAIM contributes to development programmes at national or regional level, in particular in the following fields: the organization of the actors and chains (organization of the producers, clusters, territorial resources development, etc.), local development (empowerment of civil society, participative management of projects, sustainable development in rural areas, etc.); agricultural policies, capitalization and decision-making tools (thematic observatories, information systems on markets and food trades, modelling and decision-making, administering of skill networks). The institute also offers its expertise to governmental and territorial authorities. Thanks to the synergy between the partners within its network, we play the role of a ‘master planner’ enabling it to mobilise a wide range of skills (involving institutional decision-makers, professionals, teachers, researchers, civil society) and to draw up proposals with an international dimension combining the various know-how of different teams.

Cooperation & Expertise

The CIHEAM - International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies - is a Mediterranean intergovernmental organization specialized in Agriculture, Food and Environment. The member countries of the CIHEAM are: Albania, Algeria, Egypt, France, Greece, Italy, Lebanon, Malta, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, Tunisia and Turkey. The CIHEAM is recognized as a « body of Community interest » by the European Commission. Its General Secretariat is based in Paris. The CIHEAM is constituted of four Mediterranean Agronomic Institutes (MAIs), located in Bari (Italy), Chania (Greece), Montpellier (France) and Zaragoza (Spain).

French Language CentreThe French Language Centre (CFLE-MAIM) provides students, researchers or professio-nals with a range of various training courses organized with different methods depending on the expressed needs: general or scientific French, written and oral communication, training contents and trainers, DELF and DALF preparations. The Centre is doubly involved in the quality approach, which enabled it to acquire the “FLE” quality label specific to its activity (“French as a Foreign Language” quality label), together with the ISO 9001 certificate. Each year, more than 400 trainees attend the CFLE-MAIM courses. They can thus enjoy the benefits of a pedagogy oriented towards a dynamic of academic and socio-cultural integration, directly linked to the Agropolis International Campus partners.

Mediterranean Documentation CentreLocated within the campus, the Documentation Centre welcomes the students and researchers in a convivial space and contributes to the updating and continuing development of their knowledge. Its collection is specialized on the Mediterranean region and mainly covers the subject areas developed in the training offer and the research activities: agriculture, food and sustainable rural development. The online catalogue allows a remote access to the electronic resources. The CIHEAM's collected editions are freely available in the catalogue as well. The documentalists provide trainings for the students to enable them to use documentary resources, to acquire a methodology for scientific information research and to achieve a scientific bibliography with a satisfactory level.

Publications and multi-media developmentThe Publications office publishes the Options Méditerranéennes collection (A and B series, shared by the four institutes of the CIHEAM) and the Master of Science collection which contains the best Masters presented at the CIHEAM-MAIM. A bi-monthly Information Letter is also published. Partners and students can draw on its resources for publication purposes for scientific publications.

[email protected] CIHEAM-MAIM has set up a workshop for designing and producing multi-media material for e-learning and research activities. It is specialized in developing communication strategies for pedagogical processes, in a wide range of fields and including supply chains engineering: human resources and technic sectors.

Page 5: The CIHEAM-MAIM Presentation

For over 50 years, the CIHEAM-MAIM has been observing, analysing and accompanying geopolitical, economic and cultural evolutions of the Mediterranean area. Over 5000 trainees (students and professionals, in short-duration or long courses) have been trained, including more than 900 CIHEAM Master of Science degrees awarded and several dozens doctoral studies and PhD degrees supervised. Every year, the institute welcomes, through its Euro-Mediterranean network, about 200 researchers and experts working in the framework of its research, training and cooperation programmes and covering topics related to its priority fields of expertise in agriculture, environment, food and sustainable development. An international recognition enables the institute to take part in or to coordinate international, national and European training and research programmes (Horizon 2020, Erasmus+, etc.). The CIHEAM-MAIM has been designated as operator by the European Commission to set into place the programme of European Neighbourhood for the Agricultural and Rural Development in south bank countries (ENPARD). This action, along with the euromediterranean projects conducted by the institute with the development actors (whether they are institutional, professional or civilian), reinforces the CIHEAM’s Mediterranean identity and regional action.

The CIHEAM-MAIM has been granted the ISO 9001 certification for the scope « Master training programs, vocational trainings and linguistic courses ». Its renovated Mediterranean Campus offers 98 totally equipped apartments for students and researchers-teachers, a 150 places cafeteria as well as a high-standing “Villa Mediterra” aimed at welcoming the visitors. The whole campus has been built following the HQE standards (High Environmental Quality Standards) and is totally equipped to welcome people of reduced mobility. The students benefit from a privileged work environment among the regional scientific community of Agropolis International dedicated to agriculture, food, biodiversity and environment.
