Documents on exhibitionIn July Council placed two exhibitions that are important for the future of the region on exhibition. Both of these documents are important for Marulan residents to consider and we would appreciate any feedback.

Council recently engaged heritage consultants to undertake a comprehensive review and consolidation of numerous existing heritage studies. Two of the major goals of the project were to bring the findings of numerous existing heritage studies into one document, as well as review and update the heritage items listed on Schedule 5 of Council’s Local Environmental Plan (LEP).

Recommendations from this review will inform amendments to our Local Environmental Plan (LEP) and Development Control Plan (DCP). Submissions can be made in writing or emailed to [email protected] and should be addressed to the Business Manager Planning & Strategic Outcomes. Submissions close 11th August 2017.

Council has also recently reviewed our Section 64 Development Servicing Plans (DSP) and renewed and rationalised these into 3 documents. The DSP is a document that details the water, sewer and stormwater developer charges to be levied on develop-ment areas that utilise this infrastructure; the charges for Marulan have been considered separately of Goulburn and we would appreciate your feedback. These plans are required under Section 64 of the Local Government Act 1993 and cross-referenced in Section 306 of the Water Management Act 2000.

Council’s new draft DSP’s have been reviewed and written in accordance with the 2016 Developer Charges Guidelines for Water Supply, Sewerage and Stormwater issued by the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Water.

Submissions can be made in writing or emailed to [email protected] and should be addressed to the Business Manager Water Operations. Submissions are due 5pm, 24th August 2017.

Employment Land StrategyGoulburn Mulwaree Council’s Employment Land Strategy (ELS) has been endorsed by the NSW Government Department of Planning & Environment. The ELS was adopted by Council in December 2016 following a 5 week community consultation period, and this endorsement will now allow Council to move forward with implementation of the recommendations.

The strategy provides a valuable tool to guide economic development and employment opportunity in Goulburn Mulwaree. It outlines significant potential for future growth; in particular identifying transport, health care and tourism as key industries for the local economy moving forward.

The ELS considered Marulan separate to Goulburn and other villages and included recommendations to help it flourish in the coming years – if you’d like to view the strategy drop into Council or visit our website where it is available under the Planning section.

Dwp Australia to design Aquatic CentreAward-winning architecture firm dwp Australia’s tender offer was last night approved by Council to design the Goulburn Aquatic Centre Redevelopment.

The Goulburn Aquatic Centre is a popular community centre for Goulburn Mulwaree, with thousands of visitors taking advantage of the pool and gym each month. The redevelopment project presents a once in 50 year chance to give the centre an upgrade.

Stage one of the project includes a new 10 lane, 25m indoor pool, refurbishment of the existing indoor pool and a new pool hall to encompass both of the pools, new leisure pool, change rooms, entrance foyer, café with connectivity to Victoria Park and other associated works.

Dwp Australia has undertaken a number of community aquatic and sporting centre projects around the country, delivering 60 aquatic facility projects over 30 years, including the award winning Noble Park Aquatic Centre.

The tree planting down Brayton Rd is now complete with additional Marulan streets to be beautified by Council in following years. It is therefore disappointing that three days after the trees were planted they were vandalised by some young people during school holidays. The Chamber and Council, on behalf of the ratepayers, are endeavouring to make Marulan an attractive and pleasant place to live giving its residents pride in the appearance of their village. If people know who is responsible for the destruction of approximately 15 trees, they need to know that Council will involve the police.Holcim, in conjunction with the Council and community groups, have come up with a plan to revamp Tony Onions park. All community groups in the near future will be asked for their input and suggestions about the plan. This work will be financed by Holcim, Council and the Chamber. The Chamber has been asked if we could look at providing bench seating outside the Post Office/pharmacy. The body corpo- rate has been approached and they have no objection to the seating. The Chamber has now asked the Council whether a DA is required and, if not, the Chamber will provide this amenity.Council has also been in discussion with the Chamber about the reconditioning of the slip road entrance to Marulan. This is the one-way road beside the BP service station. Council is looking at curb and guttering and planting out each side of the road to improve an ugly entrance to the town. Eventually, this work will progress to the roundabout. The Chamber was pleased to have The Hon. Pru Goward as a guest at our last meeting and, as our local member, she was able to enunciate grant opportunities in the recent state budget, who to apply to, and what areas the grants applied to. Chamber members were pleased with the information given and had time to ask follow-up questions. We thank the honourable Member for her time and interest in our village.David Humphreys President Marulan Region Chamber of Commerce Inc.

Did you guess who the local was from April’s newsletter? How many of you knew that it was Matthew from The Maru-lan General Store? Let’s get those thinking caps back on again for August and get to know another local. This one might get you really thinking!

I was born in the Southern Highlands in 1986 and have been living in the area ever since. I have 3 brothers and sisters who also live in the highlands. My father is a local race car driver, who can been seen still racing out at Wakefield Park, unfortunately I did not inherit any of my father’s driving skills.I went through school at Mittagong Primary and Bowral High School. After leaving school I went on to college to pursue a career in my chosen field – Beauty Therapy. After com-pleting my course I worked for some local businesses in the Southern Highlands. I came to Marulan in 2012 where I worked for a local business, building that business up from a struggling small business to one that flourished. Every customer knew me by name, or if not they had a unique nickname for me. After I left the company, I moved on to another of the local Marulan businesses whilst also pursuing my career in Beauty Ther-apy. I started working full time in my current employment during 2016. I am well known by many people and I love to chat to the customers, making them feel very welcome. One of my loves are my two pooches, and I love all the pooches who come to see me and often have a special treat for them. I am still as cute today as I look in the photo.

Guess where this is in MarulanDid you correctly guess where the image was in Marulan? Did you now it was the All Saints' Anglican Church at 44 George Street. This lovely little church is made of Wingello sandstone. The foundation stone of the church was laid on 21st March 1878. Mrs Thomas, wife of the Right Reverend Mesac Thomas, the Bishop of Goulburn at the time, chose the name.Of interest is that below the foundation stone lies a sealed bottle containing an 1878 Queen Victoria three penny coin, a copy of 'The Australian Churchman', and a piece of parch-ment on which a message was written.

Can you guess where this is?

We’ll let you know the answer in the next newsletter.

Marulan District Historical Society

MARC Footings are about to be poured so it should not be long until we have a new extended Centre.

Town WalkEarlier this month our Society had a visit from thirty members of the Moss Vale Probus Club. Our President Russ and Sue Milne took them for a walk along George St. while Shirley, Noeleen and Sue gave them morning tea and a lovely lunch. The visitors were most appreciative of our hospitality and were very interested in our displays especially the items recovered from “the Dig” at “old Marulan”. Thanks guys.

Quarry Reunion As our treasurer Rosemary along with her two sisters has been away touring the continent, the preparations for the reunion have been on hold this month but now that she has returned it is all go-go-go. I have had people saying they would like to come so keep a look-out for more details next month.

Railway 150We recently met with “railway buff”, Leon Oberg who cop-ied one of our old photographs of the Tolwong Mine for the “Railway” magazine which he publishes. He has shown an interest in being part of our “150” celebrations. Although it is still a year away, planning has to start now.

Guest SpeakersEach month at our meetings we have one of our members give a short talk on some interesting happenings in their life. Last meeting, George Smith gave a very interesting and in-formative talk about his life in the navy on submarines. To re-cord all these interesting snippets, we have now purchased a tape recorder so we will be able to keep them forever.

Grown Up StuffWe are having a lot of fun and doing some good things along the way. If you have some time to spare and an ambition to help others, maybe you would like to join us.The Marulan Lions Club now have a defibrillator (called a “Packer-Whacker “ a few years ago before we got all P.C.). So at its last meeting Tracey McCutcheon from the Goul-burn Hospital was a guest to educate us in the usage of this life-saving equipment. At one of the venues where Mendooran Lions regularly have a weekend barbeque, staff of the said venue (which does not wish to be named in print but we all know who they are) were asked to vote for their favourite sausage sizzlers. Mendooran Lions scored best with 9.99 out of 10. For which we are very proud. You wouldn’t think that there were too many ways to cook a sausage but apparently there must be!We are continuingly running raffles and collecting donations which are being carefully hoarded away. These monies will buy a house for $6,000. “But where can you buy a house for $6,000?”, I hear you ask. There is a family of 11 living in a tiny, rusted corrugated iron single room in Fiji. The cost of a whole house can be collected by Marulan Lions in a short time with the help of our friends who donate so generously. Meanwhile, on the home front some members are frantically knitting bedsocks for our seniors in nursing homes where we sing carols at Christmastime. Our target is 90 pairs!!!At our last meeting Marlene Skipper handed the reins of residency to Maureen Eddy and everyone was invited to partake in a glass of wine to celebrate. See ...... I said we DO have SOME fun!!Any queries? Want to know more? Phone me – Chris- on my home phone on 48035784

Gunlake Approval a Positive for Local Growth, Jobs and DevelopmentAfter a lengthy process, the Land and Environment Court has conditionally approved Gunlake Quarry’s application to increase its production from 750,000 tonnes to 2 million tonnes per annum.‘This is a win for the local region and we are grateful for its support,’ quarry owner, Mr Ed O’Neil said.‘Not only does it confirm our operations for the next 25 years, it has also secured the jobs of our 15 new employees who we employed last year in anticipation of the approval. In addition, since this approval we have employed an additional four new employees and we are now looking for a further three full time employees.’‘The approval requires us to upgrade the primary haulage route which will see significant improvements to both Brayton, Ambrose and Red Hills Roads as well as the entrance to the Hume Highway at Red Hills Road.’Gunlake prides itself on being a family owned Australian business and is committed to investing in Marulan and the district’s future.‘We are here to stay. We will continue with our commitment to the region by using local contractors and business services as much as we possibly can and we look forward to the continuing support of the whole Goulburn Mulwaree area,’ Mr O’Neil concluded.

MARULAN VOLUNTEERS

Who are we? We are a group of local residents trying to improve the appearance of our town.

Why do we do this? If our town looks appealing and cared for, this will attract visitors who will support our local businesses. It also makes it a better environment for us to live in as locals.

What do we do? Local council mows the town’s parks and some of its nature strips, but doesn’t have the resources to do much more than this. The volunteers supplemen t the work of council by regularly cutting the edges and whipper snipping the main street and parks. We also weed the gardens in the parks, and collect litter in areas around town. Other less frequent and one-off activities have included: refurbishing the grounds at the Brewer Centre; mulching the gardens in Meridian Park; repair-ing and painting roadside fences in the main street; and repairing and painting the fence & rotunda in Tony Onions Park.

How often do we do it? Generally speaking, the volunteers work for 2-3 hours on the first and third Monday (starting approx-imately 9.30am) of each month.

How can you help? If you have spare time and are available on Mondays, then we’d love you to join us. If this time isn’t suit-able but you’d like to help, then please contact: David Blissett: 0400 119 016; Ellie Eggerking 0406 376 717; John Redhead: 0439 411 922Volunteers receive a free cup of coffee on “Volunteer Mondays” at The Marulan General Store (facebook.com/marulangeneralstore).

Until 8 July JUSTENE WILLIAMS: THE CURTAIN BREATHED DEEPLYEXHIBITION CURATED AND DEVELOPED BY ARTSPACE, SYDNEY AND TOURING NATIONALLY IN PARTNERSHIP WITH MUSEUMS & GALLERIES OF NSW

The Curtain Breathed Deeply is an expansive new commission by Sydney based artist Justene Williams. The exhibition will transform the entirety of goulburn.art REGIONAL GALLERY into an intentionally chaotic, immersive and interrelated sequence of installations. Her largest and most ambitious undertaking to date, The

Curtain Breathed Deeply will seduce visitors into and through a series of hypnotic sets and video installations abounding in cacophony and sensory overload.

ARTEXPRESS is a joint initiative of the NSW Department of Education and the NSW Education Standards Authority with goulburn.art REGIONAL GALLERY

ARTEXPRESS 2017 brings the next generation of artist superstars to Goulburn. The exhibition will present over thirty of the very best HSC Visual Arts candidates working across a broad variety of artforms including painting, ceramics, photography and textiles.

The works in this year’s show indicate not only the extraordinary technical skill and ability but a maturity well beyond what is expected of a 17 year old in handling challenging and sometimes confronting concepts. These young artists will present us with some colossal social, political and environmental issues and offer a generous and courageous insight into their own experiences. The exceptional standard of the work in ARTEXPRESS is a testament to the high quality of teaching within the visual arts in High Schools across the state.

Goulburn’s ARTEXPRESS exhibition has been carefully curated by Gallery staff to include young artists from the region. The works have been chosen to reflect the statistics from the candidature across NSW representing students from most regions in the state from both Government and Private schools. If ARTEXPRESS is indicative of the burgeoning visual arts sector in NSW, the future for the arts looks bright!

8 September – 7 October VAST: A COLLECTION OF PRINTS & DRAWINGS ROBYN MAYOVAST is Robyn Mayo’s visual record of her travels through central Australia between 1996 and 2013 when she visited Arnhem Land and the Gulf Country, the central desert areas of Rainbow Valley, Chambers Pillar, The Painted Desert and The Simpson Desert, and Lake Eyre and the Flinders Rangers. The resulting works consist both of landscapes and of intimate flora and fauna studies made at each campsite.

Originally from the Southern Tablelands and now Tasmanian-based, Mayo’s renderings of plants are impressionistic rather than literal and she does not regard herself as a true botanical artist. She chooses to work plein air in order to feel the changing moods of landscapes and observe how plants, animals, insects and birds react throughout the day.

The 25 printmakers each chose a different artist as the starting point for their work. Choices ranged from the possum skin cloaks crafted by the original aboriginal inhabitants of the area, to colonial artists such as Joseph Lycett, to some of the greats of Australian art –Lloyd Rees, Arthur Boyd, Fred Williams and Brett Whiteley, as well as photographers such as Frank Hurley, ceramic artist Gwen Hanson-Piggot, sculptors Tom Bass and Bert Flugelman and assemblage artist Rosalie Gascoigne.

The resulting prints brought together in this exhibition are as wide-ranging and diverse as the work of the artists who inspired them.

17 November – 13 December CLAIRE PRIMROSE: ASSEMBLED LANDSCAPES

Claire Primrose’s work finds inspiration in the direct linking of immediate locations with her techniques of making a painting/drawing; transporting a real environment into the making of an artistic space evocative of its original and her own identities.

17 November – 13 December VISIONS OF PLEASURE 11

Annual exhibition celebrating International Day of People with a Disability Official Opening Friday 1 December at 1.30pm

13 October – 11 November SCOTT CHASELING BETWIXT: SCULPTURES IN BECOMINGNESS

This exhibition will reveal sculptures that represent a liminal space between a sense of place and one of being lost. Scott Chaseling will present art works relating to Heterotopia (a place between Utopia and Dystopia).

Through the use of glass and mirrors, this exhibition will demonstrate that it is possible to establish a liminal space that consists only of a state of becomingness. Liminality, in this application, is characterised by the unsuspecting, abstraction and innocence.

The sculptures and wall works reveal a point of transition, either through materials that are in a liminal process or by exploiting the viewer’s visual perception. This temporal shift of reading, along with a change in material expectations, will allow the viewer to participate with the sculpture via the introduction of their own interpretation/s.

13 October – 11 November CATHY LAUDENBACH: GUNDAROO ROOMSTwenty years ago I lived in Gundaroo: a small village north of Canberra. I spent many hours with some of the older residents of the village. I would visit regularly with my camera recording both them and their homes. Homes that were old and lived in. Homes that told stories of families, history, place and country Australia. Matt Crowe, the local publican was born in his house more than 80 years before.

Time appeared to stand still in the rooms, although now these rooms no longer exist. The inhabitants have died and with time the rooms have been modernised and renovated.

This exhibition of images of place recall a time in Australia’s recent past.

A retrospective exhibition celebrating the life work of Yidumduma Bill Harney. At over 80 years of age, Harney is one of the last fully initiated elders of the Wardaman people. He is a charismatic storyteller and artist and the only remaining living custodian of the collective memory, laws and history of his people. Harney’s knowledge has been described by anthropologists as ‘encyclopedic in nature’ and his artwork is one way that he shares this intimate understanding with the world. The exhibition is curated by Margie West who says “His contemporary painting is a fascinating look into topics as diverse as traditional law, astronomy, sorcery and ancestral narrative.” The exhibition is toured by the Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Arts & Culture Centre, at the community of Katherine, Northern Territory.

Since opening in December 2015, we would like to thank the local community for their wonderful support. This has allowed us to grow the practice to two veterinarians and three part-time nursing staff offering good old fashioned country service for both small and large animals. We service clients from Wildes Meadow to Windellema, Big Hill to Middle Arm and much more.

We aim to provide top quality veterinary care at a reasonable price. We are open Monday to Friday 9 – 5pm and Saturday 9 – 12pm but also offer a 24 hour emergency service.

With a background in teaching production animal medicine and nutrition at university and consulting overseas as well as owning her own cattle property locally, Liz enjoys both treating and preventing diseases as well as teaching clients best practice in looking after their livestock and pets. She also has worked for a number of years as an emergency veterinarian in a large specialist hospital in Sydney and un-derstands the varying small animal emergency conditions that are seen in a country area.

We have just employed a new veterinarian, Dr Henry Clutterbuck. Henry has quickly become popular with the locals and also enjoys all aspects of mixed animal practice. Henry has a passion for equine medicine and infectious diseases and completed his Honours last year on Q Fever.

We enjoy working in with Daniel and Andrew Muller at Marulan Rural Supplies who are more than happy to help our clients with their nutritional requirements to keep their animals happy and healthy. Marulan Rural Supplies has also been instrumental in organising continuing education events for local farmers and horse owners which we have contributed to. We hope to continue to support this important initiative which benefits the local community.

If you have not come in to meet us yet, please feel free to pop in and have a chat to one of our friendly team. You will likely be greeted by our head vet nurse, Hayley, who has over 20 years of experience in the industry. We are very proud of our new purpose-fitted clinic and would love to meet you and your animals.

WHAT’S IN A NAME? or A TOWN BY ANY OTHER NAME…The village we all know now as ‘Tallong’ was first named ‘Barber’s Creek’ after the stream that flowed through the area. This was named after George Barber whose original land grant was bounded by the creek on one side. When the Great Southern Railway arrived in 1868, Barber’s Creek was used to provide water for the steam locomotives. ‘Bar-ber’s Creek Tank’ was established with water being pumped directly from the creek before a dam was built in 1884. A railway platform was added at Barber’s Creek Tank in 1878 and the then named ‘Barber’s Creek Station’ was opened for passengers. As the settlement grew in size beyond the creek valley, there was some pressure for a name change. Postal records held by the National Archives of Australia include a letter from Mr Hubert J. Rumsey who wrote, in September 1895, that ‘the place will have to have a name sometime and the sooner it has one the less inconvenience will be caused’. He suggest-ed either ‘Medina’ (‘being suggestive of the crowds we hope to see some day coming on health-seeking pilgrimages’) or ‘Ballanya’, the name of another early Barber property. How-ever, the Postal Inspector’s report stated that: ‘I find that Mr Rumsey stands alone and is not supported by the residents in general’.A more serious movement for a name change in 1905, led to a letter being sent from the Office of the Railway Com-missioner, Sydney to the Deputy Postmaster General. This stated that an application from residents and regular visitors had been received asking for a change to the station name with the names suggested being ‘Murraba’, ‘Calloon’, ‘Weja’ or ‘Tallong’. The name agreed upon was ‘Tallong’ which the Railway Department said was the local Aboriginal term for ‘stream of water’ and from 1st July 1905, Tallong was officially born.In the same way, the new management at the local store has rebranded and revamped Tallong General Store and it has now become ‘The Midge, Tallong’ named after the village’s emblem, the Tallong Midge Orchid. New proprietors Sharon and Jeremy Porter have a wealth of hospitality experience and a strong commitment to the local community. Together they ran a successful motel and restaurant on the coast for 16 years and for the past 7 years Sharon has been working as a Hospitality teacher at Goulburn High School. Their work on the Tallong Community Focus Group, the Apple Day Committee, Tallong P & C, the Tal-

long Park Association and the local soccer club are well known. While continuing to supply general store needs, they are providing lots of great food including coffee and (already popular!) home made cakes. They plan to hold theme nights and provide the option for busy peo-ple to order a wholesome dinner which will take the guilt out of not cooking. They will also offer local residents the opportunity to showcase their arts/crafts and other skills by selling on consignment. They will even be able to take care of a birthday cake for loved ones, cater for events and pick up those special orders from Goulburn. See you there soon!

August is the time to prepare for spring. You can finish pruning your roses and camellias can be pruned to shape after flowering. Remove dead wood from lemon trees and shorten fruiting laterals as crop is picked. Don’t cut back frost damage on plants until next month when frost should have eased.

Help your annuals along with a bit of side fertiliser or with water soluble fertiliser. Citrus can be fed with citrus food. Spread to the outer line of foliage. Water in well. Then mulch.Watch out for garden pests on new spring growth, such as aphids. Squash or spray with a jet of water. Try not to remove helpful predators.

Spray lawns for Bindii and clover taking care not to get too close to trees and shrubs growing close to the lawn.Prepare your vegetable garden for summer. Rotate planting to avoid diseases. Dig in aged manure or compost, then top off with mulch.

14 July – 2 SeptemberARTEXPRESS is a joint initiative of the NSW Department of Education and the NSW Education Standards Authority with the goulburn.art REGIONAL GALLERY

17 November – 13 December SOUTHERN HIGHLANDS PRINTMAKERS: CONTINUUM An exhibition of contemporary prints responding to artists from previous generations who have had connections with the Southern Tablelands region between Sydney and Canberra.
