Dear Brothers & Sisters, We all have family members and friends, people very dear to us, who have drifted away from the practice of the faith. It can cause us great anguish when the people we care about most do not share our most treasured convictions. We worry about them, because we believe their eternal salvation is in jeopardy. And we long for them to experience the joy and peace we know our faith can bring. Ask them what happened that pushed them away from the Church, and eventually you’re likely to hear about the hypocrisy and self-righteousness they have experienced or perceived among Christians and especially Church leaders. Regardless of the accuracy of these perceptions (as with most generalizations, there is a kernel of truth that is overstated), “perception is reality,” especially for younger people for whom honesty and integrity are among the most important values. This Sunday’s Gospel reading is about the true nature of righteousness. Jesus is speaking to the “chief priests and elders of the people,” that is, the religious elites who considered themselves righteous, favored and justified before God, and who looked down upon everyone else, especially notorious sinners like tax collectors and prostitutes. He basically tells them that actions speak louder than words, and that if one wants to be truly righteous, they must back up what they profess with what they do. Mere lip service will not cut it. This is why those who ultimately do what is right, who strive to honor their Father’s will, are righteous and will enter the kingdom of God before those who say all the right things but do not strive to live them out. The most important thing we can do if we wish to attract people back to the faith, especially young people and those close to us, is to live what we profess. If they know that we claim to be Christians, and they find us actually being Christians, living our faith with integrity and sincerity, then our witness will be powerful. When we speak to them about faith, when we invite them to participate in the life of the Church, they will be more likely to be receptive to what we have to say. If they see us living our faith joyfully and fruitfully, they will be attracted to it and be able to meet the Lord through us.

In Christ & St. Philip, Fr. Jeff

Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading: Ezekiel 18:25-28 Ezekiel reminds the people that if a sinner turns away from his iniquity, he will live, not die. Second Reading: Philippians 2:1-11 Paul urges the converts at Philippi to be united in spirit and ideals, avoiding rivalry and dissension. He ends with the beautiful hymn extolling the humility and sacrifice of Christ. Gospel: Matthew 21:28-32 Jesus speaks words of rebuke to the chief priests and the elders because they are not believing the teachings of John the Baptist. He warns them that tax collectors and prostitutes, who do believe John, will enter the Kingdom of God before them.

UPDATE ON RELIGIOUS EDUCATION from Nancy Cichocki, PCL With the return to school and adjusting to a “new normal”, families are facing new challenges and concerns. To alleviate some of the stress, the start of the Holy Trinity Religious Education program has been delayed till Monday, October 5, 2020 (4:30-5:30). Our instruction will also move to an online format for all grades out of concern for the health and safety of our students and teachers. Please realize this is also new for me and our volunteer catechists. We ask for your patience and support as we learn this new way to teach. Attending these mandatory Google Meets will be the same as coming to in-person classes. Attendance will be taken and there might be follow-up work to be done independently or with assistance from home. Faith formation of our children requires not only formal instruction, but more importantly family involvement and examples of living our faith. **If your child does not have access to a device to participate in our remote learning, please let me know so alternative arrangements can be made. Continue to check your emails for updates on our RE program. If you have any questions or concerns, as always, please email me at [email protected].

The Church of the Holy Trinity is open for private prayer

weekdays from 9am – 4pm. Entry to the Church is restricted to the ramp entrance, where the automatic door is opened by pressing a button on the wall. Current hygiene & social distancing practices must be observed at all times, and gathering in groups is prohibited.

Our parish office is currently opened by appointment only. If you have a pastoral need during this time, please contact us by phone or email.

It will be an on-going mission to disinfect the church after each weekend mass. If you can spare some extra time after mass (especially after the 10:30am mass), let us know or check after mass to see if help is needed. Supplies are supplied.

"For 33 years, Life Chains have formed across the United States and Canada—and the world—to make a public, prayerful, peaceful witness against legalized abortion. We stand united in

prayer and repentance on the first Sunday of every October. Life Chains are built upon the promise that God gave to His people in 2 Chronicles 7. God said to Solomon in verses 14-15, '[if] my people, who bear my name, humble themselves, pray and seek my face, and turn from their evil ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land. My eyes will now be open and my ears attentive to prayer from this place.'” -LifeChain.org Life Chain will take place on Mountain Ave., Somerville on Sunday, Oct. 4th, from 2:00 - 3:30 PM, rain or shine. Participants will stand or sit at least 6 ft. apart. For more information please contact Eileen Fisher, 908 526 6568. The newly reopened Pregnancy Aid Center in Raritan is in need of baby items. IT’S NOT FAIR In today’s first reading, Ezekiel tells us – “You say, The LORD's way is not fair!” Sometimes we wonder why the wicked thrive and the good suffer. Is there someone in your life who wants to know more about God’s way, Jesus, or the Catholic Church? Invite that person to call about an Inquiry Session. Participation in a session does not require a commitment to belong to the Catholic Faith Family. Anyone who is unbaptized, baptized into a non-Catholic Christian denomination, or baptized Catholic but never received First Eucharist and Confirmation, is invited to come and inquire about Jesus our model and the catholic faith community who attempts to model our lives after him. During the Pandemic the sessions might be virtual. For more information, please reach out to our parish office at 908-526-2394.
