We hope to begin to act on some of the suggestions and to receive more recommendations from those present.

Thank you, Fr. Mike

Why we use the Letters “IHS” or INRI” to represent Jesus?

We use both symbols to honor the name of Jesus. In Gospel accounts of the crucifixion (John 19:19, Matthew 27:37), a plaque was hung over Jesus’ head that

read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews” or in Latin “Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum.” INRI” is the

abbreviation. “IHS” are the first three letters of Jesus’ name in Greek. This monogram grained popularity starting in the twelfth century when St. Bernard encouraged its use as a devotion to Jesus’ holy name.

Volunteers Needed

Religious Education is in need of volunteers to be substitute teachers and aides. This would NOT be a regular teaching assignment. We have teachers/aides that occasionally call out and we have a hard time finding replacements. The classes are on Tuesday evenings from 5:30 PM – 6:45 PM. If you are interested please see Michele or Kim in Religious Education. Thank you.

Calling All Apostles What did the apostles think when, at the Last Supper, Jesus said “tonight, one of you will betray me”? On Tuesday of Holy Week our presentation of the “Living Last Supper” will seek to answer that question and we are seeking men who would be interested in playing the roles of those apostles. A small commitment of time but a big opportunity to impact your life and the lives of others. What to find out more? Call John Macerino at 732-966-7931 or the church office and we will contact you.

Gospel: Matthew 5:13-16 Jesus reminds the disciples and all Christians that they carry special responsibilities to be “the salt of the earth.” They must not hide their light but show their goodness to all. “Thus says the Lord: Share your bread with the hungry, shelter the oppressed and the homeless; clothe the naked when you see them, and do not turn your back on your own… you are the salt of the earth… you are the light of the world.” It is hard for us to escape the direct teaching of Jesus and the prophet Isaiah. A familiar biblical question ‘what are we to do?’ finds a ready answer in these two scripture sources. What Christian cannot be moved when we see images of the millions of refugees fleeing the wars in Iraq and Syria, drowning in the Mediterranean. How few Christians respond with compassion and empathy, afraid to take the risk to care for suffering humanity. Do I forget that they too are made in the image and likeness of God? Even if some have less than noble intentions, do we let all suffer? How is it I live as salt of the earth? How can I be light of the world? Agencies do incredible work aiding those in need. Our church is at the forefront. Consider Jesuit Refugee Services, Catholic Relief Services, Doctors Without Borders, CNEWA and Aid to the Church in Need and countless others responding generously. Why do I sit back as others need the salt and light that we are? More than the financial aid you might give is the attitude of grave concern in these moments of crisis.

Support your Parish! Here’s another way to boost your business while supporting your parish. Every Sunday a weekly bulletin is placed in the hands of every person attending the Sunday Mass. It is a “Must read” for members who wish to stay current with the activities and programs of our parish. The majority of readers you will reach are homeowners with families who have a strong commitment to the local area and tend to support businesses who support their faith community as well as professionals within the congregation.. Epiphany distributes 500 bulletins each week. Based on this circulation, your message is presented thousands of times over 52-week period. If interested, please contact Carol at 732-458-0220 or email [email protected] 2018 Mass Intentions The opening of our 2018 Mass Intention Book will be delayed. Please look for future announcements and New Mass intention policies.

Emmaus Men’s Group The Emmaus Men’s Group of Epiphany is a ministry for today’s Catholic man. It is a Catholic Men’s Fellowship Group that exists to serve and bring together men to strengthen their faith. The group will meet on Saturday, February 11th from 9 – 11AM.

The Daniel Plan WHAT IS THE DANIEL PLAN? The Daniel Plan is a groundbreaking healthy lifestyle program founded on biblical principles and focused on The Essentials:

Faith, Food, Fitness, Focus and Friends. The program offers an innovative approach to achieving a healthy lifestyle where people get better together by optimizing their health in each of these life areas. Each essential supports and influences the others, offering a practical step-by-step approach for anyone to follow. The essentials of Faith and Friends are what we call the “secret sauce” that makes The Daniel Plan so effective. The program benefits are accelerated when done in a supportive community of friends because God designed us to thrive in relationships. We have learned that the process of getting healthy and staying healthy relies on the support and encouragement of friends. With the support of God and your group, you have far more than willpower helping you to make positive changes so you can be consistent and sustain your new healthy lifestyle. The overarching message of The Daniel Plan is about abundance, not deprivation, and this is why the plan is both transformational and sustainable. The Daniel Plan teaches a step-by-step approach and offers simple ways to incorporate healthy choices into your current lifestyle. Throughout the program you are encouraged to rely on God’s power, and the application of dependable biblical principles. Let me know if you are interested and what time and day is best for you. Also, let me know if you want me to get a book for you. I have found a source for a great price but I don't know how long it might be available. Deacon Mike Mullarkey
