The Church & the Kingdom

What is the church?

ἐκκλησία (ekklesia), “a calling out”, as in an assembly.

In the Bible, the body of the saved (called out of the world)

Universal – all who are saved – Eph. 1:22-23, Matt. 16:18

Local – a congregation – Gal. 1:2, 1 Cor. 1:2, Acts 9:31, etc.


What is the kingdom?

βασιλεία (basileia), a region ruled by a king

In the Bible, it too has reference to the saved!

If one is in the church (universal), he is also in the kingdom. And if one is in the kingdom, he is also in the church.


How are they the same?

Matt. 16:18-19, “Upon this rock I will build my church”…“And I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven”

Kingdom – Conveyed into the kingdom Col. 1:13-14

Church – Saved, Savior Acts 2:47, Eph. 5:23


Conditions for entrance

Kingdom – “Born again of water” “Baptized” John 3:3,5; Ac.8:12

Church – “Baptized”1 Cor. 12:13, Acts 2:38, 47


The Lord’s Supper

Kingdom – “in My Father’s kingdom” Luke 22:18, 29-30

Church – “Communion”1 Cor. 10:16,17; 11:18-26


Why not use one term or the other?

They describe different qualities of the same entity. The church – reference to an assembling; Kingdom – its form of government

The Kingdom of God

A spiritual kingdom There will NOT be a kingdom

on earth – cf. 1 Thess. 4:16,17
