My deepest thanks to all those who helped make the presentations of the Quilts of Valor to our "heros" possible on Memorial Day Sunday.
In all, 19 member/friends of ECC received QOV’s - 16 at church and three at home. It was an honor to recognize and thank each of you for your service and sacrifice in this manner. But... we are not finished! There were others on the list who were unable to attend the May 24th service, who are also deserving of this honor. To be sure that ALL are recognized, there will be an additional presentation on Veteran's Day Sunday. If you have already given your Information Sheet to Pastor Don, we look forward to honoring you in November. If you did not fill out a slip there is still time to do so. Please contact me at [email protected] or Pastor Don so that you name will be added to the list. Thank you again for letting me share the Quilts of Valor Foundation program with you. Nancy Parker

Save Money on Home Heating Oil
2015-2016 As you may know, about 17 years ago the Trustees organized a small group of our members and their friends to buy heating oil at below market prices. Our supplier, Andrews Oil of South Windsor, also agreed to a rebate for the church’s fuel account. The program became very popular and has grown steadily to the point, where this past heating season over 50 families participated and the church earned rebates of approximately $2100. This is a true win – win program. You save money on your heating oil and help our church at the same time. We are trying to expand our group further and would like to have you, your extended family, friends, and neighbors join us. Again this year, we made some changes in our program so as to continue to offer our participants good value for their heating oil dollars. In addition to Andrews Oil, we will continue with a second, full service dealer, Automatic TLC Energy of East Hartford. I have outlined the programs for each company below and encourage you look them over and decide which you feel will best meet your needs. You must act fairly quickly as there are some deadlines in place. Andrews Oil will no longer offer us a “capped price” or “pre-buy at a fixed price” options. They will offer members of our buying group their “cash/ market price at time of delivery” pricing. With this program, the prices will vary from delivery to delivery and a participant will be asked to pay for their delivery within 3 business days. (Payment options would be #1) pay the driver, #2) have a credit card number on file with Andrew’s office, #3) mail a check to the office, or #4) pay by phone using your credit card. If prompt payment is not received, a higher price per gallon would be charged. Automatic delivery and equipment service contracts ($260/annually) are also available. Andrews will also continue their rebate program to the church oil fund. Please call Colleen at
5
Andrews Oil (860-528-0766) to enroll, cancel, or renew your participation in this program. Automatic TLC Energy. In this, their second year, TLC has changed their program. Participants will now be charged at a “commercial market price” which will vary from delivery to delivery but you would be protected by a cap at $2.699/gallon. (You will never pay higher than $2.699). You must pay for your delivery within 25 days using check or credit card. Twelve month or shorter budget programs may also be arranged. To participate, your account will have to be set up with TLC before August 31, 2015. The cap price cannot be guaranteed after that date and will probably increase. For those families who dealt with TLC this past season, a phone call to TLC can get you into their new program at the lower prices at once. TLC also offers equipment service contracts. Hot air furnace plan would run $196/annually. A hot-water (baseboard) plan would run $299/annually. Both of these plans cover most parts and labor. TLC will also donate to the ECC rebate program. Please call Leo Marinak at TLC (860 290-5033) to get more details of the program, register, and participate. In closing, I would offer that, in my opinion, both companies are older, well established, reputable organizations. I think it comes down to where you feel oil prices will go this season. Both companies reserve the right to reject a prospective member who resides outside of their normal delivery areas or who they feel does not meet their respective credit criteria. Remember to respond quickly and observe the deadlines. Feel free to call me with any questions you might have about the respective companies, their programs, and enrollment. Thanks for your attention, Jack Hagopian (H) 860-872-2890 or (C) 860-817-3466
Coming this Fall… Exploring Church Membership
If you have an interest in membership in our church. More information in the
September Caller.
The Prayer Shawl Ministry does not meet during the summer but members continue to knit/crochet at home. If you would like the easy basic pattern or have any questions during the summer, please call me at 860 875-1543. A prayer shawl can make a wonderful item for anyone dealing with illness, undergoing treatment or anyone who might be in need or some extra comfort. Shawls can also be presented for happy occasions such as the birth of a baby, friendship, or a special birthday. Prayer shawls are available in the room off of the Narthex. A card is provided and includes the prayer of blessing that we use at our meetings when we bless the shawls. There is also a space for you to write a personal note to the person that will receive the shawl. Please help yourself.
Jan Starkweather
SACRED STITCHES MINISTRY has decided to continue meeting during the summer because we enjoy sewing together so much. However, in
July our meeting date has changed to Wednesday, July 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The August meeting will be the regular second Monday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bring your lunch and sewing machine and come and join us for a day of fun and fellowship. We supply the patterns and fabric and the coffee pot is always on. Hope to see you in July. If you have a question, call Peg, 860-454-7360 or Judy, 860-875-6642.

Friendship Class Study for Fall 2015
On Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at 1 p.m. we will begin Adam Hamilton’s Not a Silent Night, Mary Looks Back to Bethlehem. Imagine Jesus from Mary’s point of view – proud of her son, in awe of his gifts and mission, guided by love for him as a person and so much more. In this book, Adam Hamilton begins at the end, with Mary at the crucifixion and resurrection; travels back in time as she witnesses his life and ministry; and ends at the beginning, with the Christ child born in a stable, Mary’s beautiful baby. Join us and experience Jesus through the eyes of his mother. This session will run through December.
We will begin with the
“Introduction” and Chapter 1 “Beginning With the End” on September 1, 2015 at 1 p.m.
Cost of the book is $14.00. To sign up contact Dawn Stone [email protected] or 860-875-8003 or call the church office 860-871-6606. Hope to see many of you there. It promises to be an inspiring study!

Report of Building Committee
For special church meeting,
July 29, 1915 These are some excerpts from that report.
The purpose of this report is to bring to the church the progress made by the committee in connection with the architect in getting the plans and specifications for the new church building perfected and brought within the means of the church: and to give to the people a full understanding of the present condition of affairs and the possibilities and prospects for the work ahead with recommendations by the committee for immediate action by the church. On March 2nd the committee met with the architect and very carefully considered the plans in detail and gave directions to the architect to prepare working plans and specifications. This work was then taken up by the architects: who went into the matter very minutely and they took especial pains in the preparation, and gave the plans unusual thought and study. Models of both the interior and exterior were prepared and the whole thing was worked out in every detail. This required considerable time and early in June the plans and specifications were placed in the hands of six selected contractors-all known to be competent and reliable, and with records of having done good construction work along such lines, These six bids were returned on June 22nd with the result that prices ranged from $32,738.00 to $43,500.00.
7
These figures were somewhat a surprise and the committee did not feel authorized to contract-without further instruction and not until an attempt had been made to cut the building, or the price, below the above (figure). Accordingly the architect proceeded to prepare some alternate specifications and the two lowest bidders were again asked to figure, item by item, what the saving would be in these changes should be substituted for the original design; and on July 9th these two lowest contractors submitted their statements of reduction of cost, item by item on the substitute specification. These reductions, when figured off from the original bids, left the Edward F. Minor Co. still the lowest bidder and brought the cost down to about $27,000.00. Many of these alterations, however, the committee felt would be decidedly objectionable and if allowed in full would materially cheapen the building; but some of them could be accepted without serious objection, and in fact some few might be desirable changes to make. And on July 12th the Committee went over these changes with the architect very carefully and approved those that seemed desirable to make-retaining the original where it seemed necessary and advisable. Again figuring the cost, and cutting out only those items that the committee felt could reasonable and satisfactorily be dispensed with, the committee is now ready to report that the building can be built for just about $30,000 and will not be stripped of its beauty and utility or durability-and should prove very satisfactory. With the encouraging and satisfactory report made by our soliciting committee and the report of funds directly available and safely to be relied upon, we feel surely that the church would justified in going right ahead and contracting with the Edward F. Miner Co. as above outlined: and the committee so recommend.

Feeding Children EverywhereFeeding Children EverywhereFeeding Children EverywhereFeeding Children Everywhere
Feeding Children Everywhere is a social charity
that empowers and mobilizes people to assemble
healthy meals for hungry children. The movement
began in 2010 after Don and Kristen Campbell
participated with a small group of volunteers
sending meals to Haiti following the devastating
earthquake. Inspired to do more, the Campbells
scraped together the family’s humble savings and
founded Feeding Children Everywhere. The “secret
ingredient” of the movement happens when
generosity, hands on volunteer participation, and
the efficient assembly line system converge at a
meal packaging event.
The healthy ingredients of lentils, rice, dehydrated
vegetables, and pink Himalayan salt can be
packaged and shipped for 25 cents per meal. The
meal is delicious and at the same time provides a
balance of protein, vitamins and minerals. This
healthy blend of ingredients is designed to combat
the effects of malnutrition, support the body’s
ability to learn, and provide hungry children with
hope. It’s simple. Every dollar donated provides
four healthy meals to hungry children around the
world. Once packaged, the meals are shipped to
hungry children in the United States and
internationally.
There are over one billion people at risk of going
hungry each day. Nearly 20% of people live on less
than $1 per day. In the United States over 40% of
children in public schools are on the government
sponsored free and reduced price meal program.
The USDA estimates that over 14 million children in
the United States are hungry right now. The
Feeding Children Everywhere movement is battling
the crisis by sending millions of meals to schools
that serve hungry kids on four continents including
right here at home. Internationally Feeding
Children Everywhere is sending meals to East
Africa, West Africa, Southeast Asia, Caribbean,
Central America, and South America.

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS FOR 2015
Congratulations to the following individuals on receiving the 2015 Women’s Fellowship Scholarships:
Spencer Plourde is a 2015 graduate of Ellington High School. He has been active not only at ECC and in TELOS but also in the high school and the
community. He also worked at three jobs, administrative assistant, camp counselor and games host at Six Flags. Busy young man! He credits TELOS with opening his eyes to the wider world beyond Ellington and molding him into the young man he is today. Spencer will begin his studies at the University of Central Florida in the fall. Congratulations and good luck.
Dominick Parisi is also a 2015 graduate of Ellington High School and active in ECC, his school and the community. He also is an Eagle Scout. His project was
building regular and handicapped picnic benches for the Town of Ellington. He is also a gymnast and Certified Lifeguard. Dominick gives ECC and TELOS credit with providing him with support and encouragement during some difficult times in his life. Two thoughts he expressed about ECC were “many hands make light work, and it takes a village to raise a child”.
12
Dominick will begin his education at Central Connecticut State University in the fall. Congratulations and good luck.
hawkwing REMINDER: Women’s Fellowship collects gently used coats and new items for the Lakota people in South Dakota and the items are distributed through the efforts of hawkwing, a non-profit organization. There is a box in the narthex for depositing clean coats in good condition, and Jan Danforth faithfully collects and stores them each week. (Thank you Jan D.) Our congregation has been extremely generous in their donations and every donation makes a difference, so thanks! For additional information about this mission, the website is www.hawkwing.org. You may also see Janet W. or Peg D. at church as they coordinate the hawkwing missions for our church.
