    IN the last days of Narnia far !" to the west #eyond Lantern $aste and %lose

    na(e was Shift. There were 'ery few Tal)in& Beasts or *en or Dwarfs or "eo"le

    of any sort in that "art of the wood #!t Shift had one friend and nei&h#o!r

    who was a don)ey %alled P!++le. At least they #oth said they were friends #!t

    P!++le always said Of %o!rse Shift of %o!rse. I see that. P!++le ne'er

    %o("lained #e%a!se he )new that Shift was far %le'erer than hi(self and he

    tho!&ht it was 'ery )ind of Shift to #e friends with hi( at all. And if e'er

    P!++le did try to ar&!e a#o!t anythin& Shift wo!ld always say Now P!++le I

    !nderstand what needs to #e done #etter than yo!. Yo! )now yo!,re not %le'er

    P!++le. And P!++le always said No Shift. It,s /!ite tr!e. I,( not %le'er.

    Then he wo!ld si&h and do whate'er Shift had said.

    One (ornin& early in the year the "air of the( were o!t wal)in& alon& the shore

    Ho" into the Pool1 said P!++le twit%hin& his lon& ears.

    $ell how are we to &et it if yo! don,t1 said the A"e.

    B!t 4 #!t said P!++le wo!ldn,t it #e #etter if yo! went in1 Be%a!se yo!
