Report on progress of PP Joy - some good news:
I spoke with Joy on Sunday and he is doing well. He had another chemotherapy treatment last Thursday
and has come up feeling a lot better than he did after his first treatment.
The good news is that his results are very good and his readings significantly lower already.
He is in a good frame of mind and will welcome a phone call.
Kevin Francis
Almoner
John Gander
I spoke with John Gander today. John is getting better slowly and has been attending a program called
HARP (Hospital Admission Risk Program), a rehabilitation exercise program provided by the state to gain
muscle tone. We wish John all the very best for a speedy recovery.
Hopefully, John will attend our meeting on the 2nd October.

President’s Report: 25-09-2018
Last Thursday, a new agreement was signed by John Anderson and myself at the Knox Police
Complex to re-register the Community Police vehicle under the Croydon Rotary Club for another
12 months. Vic Roads Registration papers were also received by the club and payment made
last week.
With the District Governor, Russell Gurney’s visit drawing near, Joy Varughese and myself have
been quite busy collating all the required paperwork and information together. I would like to thank Joy
for the guidance and the tremendous amount of help he has given me towards achieving this mammoth
task.
Last Tuesday night we had Daniel Hearn and Debbie Styles speak to us about the Social Inclusion Program
that is run by the Maroondah City Council at the Kerrabee Club located in Croydon. The Kerrabee Club
runs a Social Inclusion and Wellbeing program that ensures residents that are frail/aged, have a disability or
are socially isolated, receive support to remain independent and continue to participate in their community.
They offer a variety of services including transport to and from the centre. The programs at the Kerrabee
Centre include: social groups, men’s and women’s groups, woodwork groups at the Men’s Shed on the
premises, monthly day trips and even taking residents to medical appointments.
Please note that our meeting at the Dorset Gardens Hotel next week will be held in the Board Room.
We will conduct our meeting first and those who wish to have dinner will proceed to the Bistro where
a table will be organized. Please ensure you notify me prior to the meeting, if you wish to
stay for dinner. Drinks will need to be purchased at the Bistro prior to the meeting.
Our Fashion Parade at Bramleigh Estate in Warrandyte, is drawing near. If you have not yet purchased any
tickets, please do so ASAP. John Anderson and Marlene Sinclair are organizing the tables, so if you want
to make up a table of 8 or 10 or for just a single ticket or two, please inform John or Marlene. There will
be plenty of prizes to be won and heaps of fun in store!
Regards,
Jean Stuart
Chairman’s Report:
Daniel Hearn has been an employee of Maroondah City Council for over the last 4 years. He was originally
employed to take the reins of a new position within Council as the Community Halls Officer. This position
consisted of creating new policies, procedures, and risk management guidelines for over 50 community groups
accessing a range of community spaces with Maroondah. At the beginning of 2017, Daniel accepted his current
role with Council’s Aged and Disability team at the Kerrabee Centre as the Social Inclusion and Wellbeing
Officer.
The Kerrabee Centre is a facility which provides Social Support services for residents who are frail/aged and
identified as being socially isolated. Daniel has assisted in increasing the number of Social Support Programs
on offer at Kerrabee, facilitates the Maroondah Carers Support Group, and is a committee member for the
Maroondah Festival 2018.
The Kerrabee Centre is funded by the Federal Government and has two full time and six part time staff with the
support of many volunteers. The programs are planned monthly and centre around gardening, arts & crafts and
a Men’s workshop. These run Monday to Friday from 10am until 2:30pm. Clients are collected from their
homes by
one of four buses driven by volunteers. In addition, fortnightly external social support programs include two
hourly shopping outings to Eastland, visits to Croydon Library and monthly outings.
The aim of Kerrabee is to create a sense of belonging and companionship amongst the vulnerable aged in our
community.
BIRTHING KIT ASSEMBLY DAY
Following last year’s successful Birthing Kit Assembly Day, Mordialloc and Cheltenham Rotary Clubs have
again joined forces to host another assembly day on Saturday 27th October, 2018 commencing at 12:30pm at
the Sandbelt Hotel, 630 South Road, Moorabbin.
An indication of number of people attending would be most appreciated to ensure we have sufficient chairs.
