President’s Report 08-11-2016 Last Tuesday, 1st November, was Melbourne Cup Day Holiday and hence we celebrated it by doing our annual Barbeque at the Pegasus Swap Meet at the Eastfield Park Trotting Track. Those of us who took part in manning the Stall had a great time despite the weather. All I can say to those who were not there is: “you really missed the great fellowship we enjoyed”. I must first and foremost thank Marlene Sinclair who coordinated the event so well as always. Next my thanks go to Stephen Bode, and David Ferres who gathered all the things together the previous day and carted them to the site very early in the morning. They together with Marlene and Bev Stehn set up everything in time for which I thank all of them. This is followed by my thanks to Pat and Ross Taylor and Sue Jonas who were already at work by the time I reached the site at 8.00 am. There was also a friend of Bev’s, Sima Mehrabi, helping with the frying, whom I must thank as well. The rest of the team who carried out various tasks at the site were Greg O’Neill, Eric Thomas, Viv Baum, Ruth Bode, Jean Stuart, John Hexter, John Anderson, Kevin Francis and John Gander. Thank you all for the great effort. We would have netted about $1.5K from the BBQ and $432 from the Christmas Raffle Tickets sales on the day. On Sunday we had a booth at the Maroondah Festival. I wish to thank Jean Stuart, David Ferres, John Hexter, Ian Cumming, Ross Taylor, Bev Stehn, Eric Thomas, Stephen Bode and Christina Gleeson for helping out at the booth in one way or another. I must say a special word of thanks to Meg, Christina’s daughter, for assisting with dismantling the booth at the end of the day. David Ferres spent the whole day at the festival having brought the things and set them up and finally dismantling and carting things away. In between he did what he enjoys doing, selling tickets. He thinks we may have got about $400 from the sales at the Festival. From now on we will have to concentrate on the Christmas Raffle Tickets sales. On 11th and 12th November, we will have 3 school events where sales will take place. The sales at the various Shopping Centres will start on 15th November and will end on 16th December with the draw at 6.00 pm at the Croydon Central Shopping Centre. David will be making available the roster for you to fill in your names on the days when you can assist in selling tickets. Please do not say no when he approaches you. All of us will have to help out to ensure that the project is a success as the funds are needed for our own community projects. The Fundraising Committee is finalizing the accounts for the Tom Burlinson Concert and this should be completed shortly. I am pleased to inform you that we should nett more than $9K from the concert. I am looking forward to having a lot of fun and fellowship at Crave Restaurant, 238 Dorset Road, Boronia. The mystery person who will entertain us with a slide show talk on her travels can now be revealed. It is none other than Cheryl O’Neill. So come and enjoy our 2nd club fellowship and listen to Cheryl. Our Annual General Meeting will be on Tuesday 22nd November 2016. Your Board of Directors for Rotary Year 2017-2018 will have to be elected at the AGM. If Stephen Bode or any member of the Nominating Committee approaches you to be on the next Board, please say yes. You can call any of us and offer your services too, without waiting to be approached. The 4-Way Test Secondary Schools Speech Contest Finals will be hosted by us on Tuesday 29th November 2016 at the Dorset Gardens Hotel. As it is our meeting day, all of us, including our partners should make it a point to be there. Let us all be there to support Marlene and her team.

A reminder, once again, that our personal contribution of a minimum of AUD 35.00 (USD 26.50) to commemorate the Centennial of The Rotary Foundation can be paid in to me or the Treasurer in November and December. To date 3 members have contributed. I appeal to all members to contribute.

As the Yarra Ranges Rotaract Club will be celebrating their club Anniversary on Tuesday 13th December 2016 with a Dinner, I have suggested that we be part of their celebration. That can be a make-up for our regular meeting. Cheers Joy Varughese

Email from Naomi Mentiplay to Jill Fletcher:

Hi Jill,

I'm doing well, the following is for the club.

I feel like the moment when you realise that winter is coming for certain is when you wake up to go to school and it is 4 degrees outside but then you realise that it's still only October. It feels as if France went from Summer to Winter in a matter of days. The past two weeks I have been on holiday and I've spent it in the château of one of the Rotarian couples from my club. I haven't been slumming it. The château is in the region of Allier which is pretty much in the middle of France and it was built in the 1700's. It's been really nice to walk around the grounds and lie in the grass (when the suns out). I have also visited Lyon and it is so beautiful and really big! It is the second oldest and/or biggest city in France behind Paris. We went to a really nice restaurant of the Rotarians cousin and before they gave us the entree we got a plate filled with meats and a basket of bread, before the entree! The food was absolutely amazing! We also visited the basilique in Lyon, it was just awe inspiring. Absolutely beautiful. Soon the holidays will be over and it will be back to school. It is crazy to think that I have little over two months left here in this beautiful country, the time has really passed so quickly.

Naomi

THE ROTARY 9810 YEAR 10 FOUR WAY TEST SPEECH COMPETITION

This competition has been held in this district for the last 9 years and was the brainchild of PDG Brian Foley who witnessed it in another District.

On Tuesday 29th November the final five students will battle it out for first, second and third positions (and prizes of $200, $100 and $100 respectively) in this speech contest at our Croydon Rotary club meeting at the Dorset Gardens. The winner will be asked to speak at conference in Geelong in March next year.

The huge semi-final of 12 students will be held next Tuesday night, 25th October at Mulgrave Country Club (sorry it is Croydon Club night but venue problems) and our Croydon delegate Jessica Scott from Melba College is through to the semi-final.

Why is this competition so important to young people?

The aims of the competition are:

• Promote to young people the ideals of Rotary through the Four Way Test

• Encourage proficiency in public speaking

• Develop confidence and self esteem

• Students can test their skills before and audience

• Foster relationship between Rotary and schools

The students have to discuss at least 2 of the 4 ideals through their speech-

1. Is it the TRUTH?

2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?

3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

All heats, semi-finals and final are judged by my Toastmaster friends, who have a very comprehensive list of assessments and judge for us year after year. They also help coach the students going through to the next level.

As it is held “at home” I encourage everyone to attend with friends and partners and you will all be amazed at the topics and style of these 16 year olds.
