CHRISTCHURCH TRAMPING CLUB (Incorporated)

ANNUAL REPORT 2017 / 2018

PRESIDENT’S REPORT CHRIS MCGIMPSEY

It’s AGM time again and another year has flown by filled with plenty of tramping and general outdoors activity by the 300+ club members. Due to the efforts of the various trip leaders, members have had the opportunity to visit a wide range of interesting places, from sitting in the sun drinking tea and eating scones on the Port Hills through to mid-winter chicken cordon bleu Nepalese adventures. A special word of thanks to Mike Newlove who continues to lead a large number of easy/mod trips which helps the newer club members develop their taste for the outdoors. My thanks to all the committee members for their assistance in ensuring the smooth running of the club’s affairs, with a special mention to Kay Taylor and Alan Ross for their efforts in ensuring the new “Readers Digest” version of running the weekly meetings has been achieved, resulting in more time for tea and tramping gossip, as requested by the members.

The club’s largest asset is the hut in Arthurs Pass, which due to the efforts of the Steve Brueton’s hut committee has been maintained and improved to a very good standard. The time and effort put into the hut has paid off with a pleasing increase in revenue being generated due to greater usage by both CTC members and other organisations. Going on tramping trips (along with talking about them) is the reason we are CTC members and without the efforts of the Trip Convenors Elizabeth Eadon and Andrew Tromans plus the Access Officer Ian Dunn far fewer trips would occur.

In conclusion the club has a strong, active and enthusiastic membership with robust finances which ensures that 2018 should be another great tramping year.

Happy tramping

Chris

CLUB CAPTAIN ALAN ROSS

This year we did have one Helicopter call out for a non-injury related incident. Many club members now carry their own Personal Locator Beacons (PLB). It’s now common for trips to have several.

The club website based sign up system now has the ability for members to indicate if they are carrying a PLB. So in the event of a trip being overdue (and no beacon has been activated) we as aclub will have a lower level of concern. The club continues to support newer members and the trip leaders are doing a good job Alan Ross Club Captain.

DAY TRIP ORGANISER ELIZABETH EADON

So, ladies & gentlemen, as the chicken of time crosses the road of destiny and thinks to itself 'Does anyone really care why I did that?’ I notice it’s the end of the CTC year. There’s just enough time for me to report that there were some day trips this year and some people enjoyed them.

86thAnnualReportAndAccounts2018 Page 6 of 15

Page 7: The Christchurch Tramper - ctc.org.nz Reports etc... · 2 Tramping Trips (a)Trips shall be arranged in accordance with the Club Rules. Dates, times, and places are to be advertised

The newsletter often has daytrips published with electronic sign up being almost universally accepted and used. But, as progress marches irrepressibly on it seems that Facebook has become the place for impromptu unofficial trips and gap filler trips to be advertised and signed up to.

It seems easier to entice trip leaders if the organiser can fill in the trip planning database with trip suggestions. Someone with good ideas, or archive searching skills would be handy as the new day trip organiser. It’s fun to learn where the club has been before, to learn which trips run at what times of year and to feel the power of tempting people with trips to run.

Special thanks to Mike Newlove, for his regularity in running trips, and to Ian Dunn for making sure we’re only going where we’re allowed.

HUT CONVENOR STEVE BRUERTONNumbers staying at the hut have been steady from members, with a few external group bookings that provide a good burst of income. Fees for the years are above expenses which had not been the trend until recently. Although this does also reflect that we have not had the major maintenance projects this year that the last few have.

Rex recently organised a roof nail replacement weekend, removing the lead nails that kea chew on and poison themselves. Kay declared the hut pillows to be toxic dust bags and arranged replacements. Bernard and Jonathan did some power wire tidy up around the store room – the lights still work so they must have joined the right ends

Future jobs pending are replacing covers on the lounge squabs that are getting worn, and some exterior boards on the front wall need replacement.

Steve Bruerton

SOCIAL CONVENOR KAY TAYLOR

I’m really pleased at the great year we’ve had. We’ve had a full social calendar, with good attendances of 30-40 people each meeting. After 3 years in the job I’m finally organised and newsletter deadlines arrived without too many OMG, no speakers’ moments!

Wednesday club night remains a focal point for tramping discussion, new members making contact and socialising over tea and biscuits. We’ve listened to members and endeavoured to keep club business short and sharp, with a range of speakers finishing on time so there is some chat time afterwards.

Thanks to Kayleigh and Nick for providing refreshments. Kayleigh’s home baking went down a treat. Thanks to Warwick for opening up the clubrooms, and to members for helping stack chairs and clean up so we can leave on time. The CMLC clubrooms is a great facility, with the Cannon overhead projector with HDMI. Although one week we had epic gear failure - the remote was missing and we couldn’t get up to it to turn it on!

Thanks of course go to all our speakers, who have enlivened our meetings and inspired us for the past year. We’ve covered tramps, climbs, Himalayan trekking, cycle touring, rafting, canyoning, caving and wildlife talks. Also pack manufacturer Aarn Packs.

Club members have talked consistently – thanks go to Jonathan Carr, Bill Johnson and Eric Skea who have done some memorable talks. Jonathan’s caving, canyoning and rafting talks have proved popular. We’ve armchair climbed Manakau and Taranaki, Hikurangi, traversed Barron Saddle, swamDusky Sound Track, been caving in Russia with Jonathan, walked the Milford Track with Rob

Fergusson and had a holiday in Canada and Alaska with Rex and Greta Vink. Chris Todd showed his great wildlife Antarctic photos. Dr Gort on 1st aid for trampers: blister packs, strapping tape anda PLB - don’t leave home without them!

Outside speakers: Chris Adam from Archives NZ spoke on historic maps available to the public. Wildlife talks covered the Citizen Science Kea Project with Mark Brabyn, and the search for the South Island Kokako with Ron Nielson. Stefan Warner from Peak to Plateau gave a fascinating (if record-breaking long) talk on central Asia and yak wool products. We went trekking in Nepal and Bhutan with Mary Lancaster from High Places, cycle touring in Northern India with Geoff Gabites, and hiking the Pacific Crest Trail in the USA with John Henzell, which was an epic but humerous talkcovering the 3 great long distance trails in the USA in one talk, some 12,000 km of hiking! (I sincerely hope that “naked hiking day” doesn’t take off over here!) Stefan Fairweather talked on the Te Araroa Trail, and Graeme Kates on mountaineering in Arthur’s Pass. Nina Dickerhoff from NZAC talked about tramping and climbing in South Westland. Nina showed what can be done with a pair ofboots and an ice axe, though most of us would’ve been thankful for roping up where she and Jameseasily went! Sue Piercy from PTC talked on the Larapinta Trail. Lydia Maclean from CMC talked about her South Island Traverse.

We had one gear talk, the man himself Aarn Tate talking about Aarn Packs, which was very interesting, though the front pockets do look like man boobs! But that’s a small price to pay for a pain free back… We heard from Tania Seward from FMC, Canterbury DOC staff plus an evening of training from Outdoor Education NZ – so hopefully there was something for everyone.

Following a suggestion at Committee, I introduced a “Lightning Talk” for newsletter night, for members who just want to give a no pressure, short talk on a recent tramp. This has worked well, boosting numbers who help fold the newsletter too!

Social events:

The Mid-Winter Breakfast was held at Sequoia’s in Redwood. There was a dearth of numbers with members away tramping, and gloomy winter weather. We’ll move back to a more central venue, possibly back to the Chateau on the Park. The Buffet Buster walk went on to Kaiapoi and Pines Beach. The Loo-Loo award went to David Sutton for unintentional gravity-assisted clothing and toiletpaper rolling. As he’s away overseas for a year he probably doesn’t know he’s won this illustrious award!

The Mid-Winter Dinner became the “Spring has Sprung” Dinner at the club hut in Arthur’s Pass. Early October was a good time to hold it as the roads weren’t too icy and the weather better. We also got the benefit of daylight saving starting. I organised transport and suggested the food, and wehad a full hut. The group split into 2 tramping parties easy and moderate, and regrouped for feastingat night. I suggest we keep this event in the social calendar for early Oct.

The Christmas Breakup was well attended at the CMLC rooms with some yummy food. I think I ate most of Dale’s ambrosia! I’d like to run a background slide show of the years tramping photo’s - suggestions on how best to do this please. Thanks to Lnyette Hartly for organising a Christmas dinner at a restaurant. This used to be a CTC tradition for members without family in Christchurch.

The New Years’ BBQ had a change of location to picnic area 2E at The Groynes. This was very successful, a balmy 28 degrees beside the Groynes stream, Steve supplied his BBQ and a good cook-up was had by all. We even had ice creams for dessert courtesy of Bill. Great idea! We’ll stick with this venue for next year. It’s quite sheltered and private and wasn’t over-crowded. We didn’t have to book either.

Page 9: The Christchurch Tramper - ctc.org.nz Reports etc... · 2 Tramping Trips (a)Trips shall be arranged in accordance with the Club Rules. Dates, times, and places are to be advertised

Finally, thanks to everyone who has come along and supported the speakers, munched the cake, sipped tea, mulled over trips and made our club a social and welcoming place. The Social Convener can’t do the job without the support of club members!

Happy tramping and socializing to you all for the current year.

Kay Taylor

IT CONVENOR NICK EDWARDS

The most significant IT development this year has been the greater use of the online trip-signup system which went live just before last years AGM. Over the course of the year we have encouraged club members to use the online system to sign up for trips rather than the old paper forms, and the majority of members are now doing so. A number of bugs in the system have been fixed, such as problems with adding non-club members to the trip list, and problems with trip emails going to spam. Some new features have been added, such as a tick box for participants to indicate whether they are planning on taking a PLB along on a trip. A number of improvements and bug fixesare still in the pipeline, such as the ability for trip leaders to limit the number of places on a trip. We are also working on an add-on to the trip signup system which will allow trip leaders to suggest new trips. The day- and weekend-trip convenors will then be able to approve these trips for entry into the newsletter and website. This will save the trip convenors having to enter trip details manually.

The committee decided to delay the switch to an all-electronic trip-signup system for the time being, and to keep on using the paper signup sheets in combination with the online system until the systemhas fully bedded in, and until we resolve issues such as how an all electronic system will cope with people turning up last minute at the Z station or trip leaders or participants with limited ability to access the internet.

Behind the scenes we are working to improve the security of the CTC website by moving to using HTTPS (Secure HTTP) to prevent any possibility of user’s passwords or personal details being intercepted by malicious individuals. This will require us to change web-hosting provider, and we arecurrently evaluating alternative providers. We are also about to upgrade the Joomla software, which powers the website, to the latest version which will also help improve the security of the website.

I’d like to thank the other IT subcommittee members (Alastair Brown, Doug Forster, Bruce James and Richard Lobb) for their continued hard work over the year keeping the clubs IT infrastructure going and working on new developments, and also for welcoming me on to the IT sub-committee and helping get me up to speed with how it all works – I think after a year I’m just about getting there!

FMC DOC CONSERVATION OFFICER KAREN TAIT

Access has been a big issue across New Zealand this year. In our area the most pressing issue is the Riversdale Reserve which was mistakenly added to the Mt White Station pastoral lease many years ago and was poised to be sold with the lease in 2017. This sale has stalled and FMC are working hard lobbying the Minister and LINZ to get this error corrected.

DoC are undertaking a review and re-classification of the St James Public Conservation Lands. Initially it was proposed that the Hanmer Forest Park, Woodbank Conservation Area, Lake Sumner Forest Park on the northern side of SH7 and The Poplars Conservation area on the northern side of SH7 be reviewed alongside the St James Conservation Area but it has not yet been confirmed if all will be reviewed together. The draft re-classification document is to be released soon but the CTC

Page 10: The Christchurch Tramper - ctc.org.nz Reports etc... · 2 Tramping Trips (a)Trips shall be arranged in accordance with the Club Rules. Dates, times, and places are to be advertised

has thus far supported recommendations from FMC that the northern mountainous end (boundary between Mt Una and Maling Pass) of the St James be included in Nelson Lakes National Park and the rest conferred Conservation Park status. FMC also suggested that the timeline proposed was too ambitious to reclassify all proposed areas and that they should focus primarily on the St James to begin with.

The DoC/FMC partnership model for maintaining huts and tracks, formally known as the Outdoor Recreation Consortium has become its own entity in the guise of the Backcountry Trust. They will continue to operate as before using the hutsandtracks.org.nz website and welcome new applications for maintenance. Check the website for closing dates of the next round.

The National Park Management Plans for Aoraki/Mount Cook and Westland / Tai Poutini National Parks are due out in April. The CTC will be looking at these with regards to backcountry access for tramping and the maintenance of facilities for trampers in these areas. There are also indications that both the Mt Aspiring and Fiordland Park Management Plans may be up for renewal in the near future so we are watching carefully for that.

Finally, Waiau Hut opened in the St James in January. Thanks to the generosity of a private donor, this hut replaces the 2 bunk Caroline Biv on the Waiau Pass section of the Te Araroa with a lovely new 6 bunk hut slightly closer to Maling Pass. A lovely area to explore and a great hut for families with kids for an overnight outing.

For any more information on any of these items or if you have matters of concern please don't hesitate in getting in touch with me.

Cheers,

Karen

TRAINING OFFICER MANI SINGH

This year nearly a full round of training has been offered to Club members. During the winter, basic snow course was run by Adrian Busby. A snow cave building course was run by Bill Johnson at Mt Cheeseman in which club mem-bers learnt how to build a snow cave (Igloo).River crossing Course was run by Alan Ross in which around 14 club members took part.We are successfully running “How to get lost for Beginners” by Chris McGimpsey four or five times in a year. New members quite enjoy this course in which they increase their basic bushcraft skills. Chris McGimpsey was also running Bell Tea trips Series in which club members are getting general tramping training which is very useful for new club members.
