THE CHOROLOGY OF STIPA DASYPHYZLA IN ROMANIA

Based on the existing data, in this paper was designed the chorological map of Sfipa dasyphylla (Czern. ex Lindem.) Trautv. for Romania. The paper reports the presence of S. dasyphylla in three new sites in Romania. The species is newly reported for Moldavia Province (Romania).

Key words: Stipa dasyphylla, Poaceae, Dobrudja, Moldovia Province, Romania.

INTRODUCTION

The first records of Stipa dasyphylla (Czern. ex Lindem.) Trautv. (syn.: S. pennata L. y dasyphylla Lindem., S. pulcherrima K. Koch var. hirsuta (Velen.) Hand.-Mazz, S. villifalia Simonk., S. villicaulis Borb., S. joannis Celak. subsp. villifolia Simonk., S. dasyphylla Trautv. var. villifolia (Simonk.) Dom. & Podp.) in Romania was published in 1939, being quoted by Prodan I. from Mehadia under S. villicaulis Borb. Since then, the species has been quoted in several other places from Transylvania, Banat, Oltenia and Dobrudja Provinces, being included in Flora Romdniei and Flora Europaea (Morariu 1972; Martinovskg 1980; Cioclrlan 2000).

The species is present in Stipo ucranicae-Festucetum valesiacae Dihoru (1969) 1970 ass. from Babadag Plateau (Dihoru & Donit5 1970), in Stipetum pulcherrimae So6 1942 and Danthonio alpinae - Stipetum stenophyllae Ghiga 194 1 ass. from Transylvania (Frink, Pu~cag & Cristea 2005).

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Until recently Stipa dasyphylla was known only in a few places in Romania (Herculane Spa-Mehadia, Deva, VZilenii de Sus, Radovan, Murfatlar, Babadag, Dadovar Hill, Caugadia Valley, Camena and Atrnagea). Recently, the species has been identified and published in two villages in Transylvania (Frink, Pugcag & Cristea 2005) and one locality in Dobrudja (Oprea 2005).

The presence of the species in Fgntiinita Murfatlar Reserve from Constanta county is doubthl as the materials determined by Prodan I. under S. dasyphylla var. dobrogensis Prodan were proved to be S. ucranica P. Smirnov, rev. Dihoru G., confirmed by Prokudin J. (Prodan 1939; Borza 1947-1949; Dihoru 1968; Dihoru 1970; Morariu 1972). Also, the presence of the species at VBlenii de Sus, Dolj county, is questionable, the locality being cited by Beldie A. (1 979), but missing herbarium materials and it is a toponymic discordance between ViFlenii de Sus from Dolj county and VBlenii de Sus from Gorj county.

Following the processing of material from the Serbiinescu I. Collection, BUCA Herbarium, some vouchers with Stipa dasyphylla have been identified. The plant material was collected and determined by Serbiinescu I. from the regions of Moldavia and Dobrudja, Tulcea and Galati Counties. Also, plant materials collected by SerbBnescu I. from Forest BBdeana, Vaslui County, determined under Stipa ucranica P. Smirnov, proved to be S. dasyphylla (rev. StefTanut M.).

The chorological map of Stipa dasyphylla for Romania was designed in GEOCODE system on literature, herbaria, field data and through existent database processing (Fig. 1).

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

The distribution of Stipa dasyphylla in Romania In Romania S. dasyphylla was reported for 14 localities. To these records are

added three new sites from Moldavia and Dobrudja Provinces. Two localities are considered uncertain such as Murfatlar and VBlenii de Sus.

CONCLUSIONS

The presence of Stipa dasyphylla species in Dobrudja has been reassessed as there is no herbarium material to confirm this, and existing materials have been shown to be S. ucrainica.

The herbarium materials of S. dasyphylla from Serbgnescu I. Collection of BUCA Herbarium and from IAGB Herbarium confirm the presence of this species in Dobrudja region and at the same time this is the first record to Moldavia Province, Romania.
