WELCOME

Chislehurst Golf Club, founded in 1894, has an 18 hole course situated within 70 acres of beautiful parkland in the heart of Chislehurst, only 11 miles south east of Central London.

The course is a truly demanding test of accuracy rather than length, and will challenge golfers of all abilities, consistent with the design influences of the great Harry S Colt. It possesses a charm quite distinctively its own.

The jewel in Chislehurst Golf Club’s crown is its magnificent Clubhouse, Camden Place, which was built around 1717 and was, for a while during the 1870s, the home of Napoleon III, Empress Eugenie and their son, the Prince Imperial.

The Clubhouse has four function rooms and three bars to accommodate golfers and more formal occasions alike and is available, by arrangement, for various visiting functions including wedding receptions and parties.

THE COURSE

The Rt Hon AJ Balfour formally opened the course on 21st July 1894, although only the present 7th (then the 5th) now remains. The present layout is attributed to the legendary course designer Harry S Colt, adding his signature to the design of Easton Devonshire, who drove himself in as the Club’s seventh Captain on 1 June 1900. There have been no major alterations since.

Our course possesses a charm distinctively its own. The excellent greens are demanding and certainly not flat, as befitting a course designed by Colt. Tight, tree-lined fairways and, at times, awkward sloping lies add to the challenge. Any two of the eight ‘short’ holes can together demolish the highest of hopes at any one time. In the last two years Chislehurst has once again returned to the list

of host venues for County fixtures and in 2012 hosted the Kent County Junior Championships, further recognition of the test that awaits even the best golfers here at Chislehurst.

With an overall area of just under 70 acres, space is at a premium. Therefore, accuracy has always been more important than distance from the tee.

At 5106 yards for the men, the course is clearly short, but a SSS of 65 gives nothing away.

This is clearly recognised when considering that the amateur course record of 62 for a medal round, set in 1938 by OJ Llewellyn, remained for more than fifty years before being broken by Club member John Murray, who carded a 61 in 1993. This record stood

until August 2012, having been equalled in 2009 by Club member Graham Kerr, when Freddie Price from Royal Blackheath GC shot 60 during the Kent County Junior Championships.

At 4799 yards (SSS 69) the ladies’ course might be judged a harder test than the men’s. The ladies’ course record was also long-established, standing

at 67 set by Jan Gibson in 1985, until being improved by a shot in 2009 by current member Lucy Matthews. Over a period of seventy years we have hosted County matches and three Kent championships. First registered with the LGU in 1899, the ladies’ section maintains a full fixture list and our Ladies’ Open Meeting is always fully subscribed.

HISTORY

Chislehurst Golf Club was established on Saturday 26 May 1894, in Camden Place, at a meeting of distinguished local residents headed by Alexander Travers Hawes.

William Willett, a well-known builder, had bought the mansion and 124 acre park in 1890 with the intention of creating an estate of up to 300 small houses with ready access to the newly improved railway connection to London. He was now prepared to restrict himself to building fewer, larger houses on the two outer fringes of the park and make over the mansion and

the central area to the creation of a golf course.

Conveniently placed for the church and the common, Camden Place had always been central to the social life of Chislehurst. During the 1870s Queen Victoria featured among a succession of distinguished visitors to the exiled French Imperial Family - Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie -who, for that decade, were tenants of its then owner Nathaniel Strode.

The Club made no distinction between playing and non-playing members and many ladies joined for

the social side alone. The large rooms were well suited for dinners and dances. Much bridge was played and Napoleon III’s billiard room continued in frequent use.

More than a century later, the bridge meetings are still popular. Snooker is now preferred to billiards and the Club hosts a variety of evening functions and events throughout the year.

We invite you to experience the wonders of over three centuries of hospitality.

TAKE THE COURSE TOUR

Hole 1

You are greeted on this opening par 5 with an inviting drive to a right to left sloping fairway. Longer hitters will seek out the green with their second, but for others, with the ball above your feet and a pond ahead of you, your second will lay you up, leaving a downhill approach to this uphill green.

Hole 2

The left side of the fairway on this subtle dogleg leaves the best approach to this striking par 4 as a drive down the right is likely to leave your second blocked out by trees. The second shot plays longer than it looks to a deftly guarded sloping green with two front bunkers.

Hole 3

The longest par 3 on the course. The pond short left catches your eye and with a severe sloping green, guarded by bunkers on the left and right, a shot missing either side leaves a very tricky up and down.

Hole 4

Tee shots to this uphill fairway must avoid the fairway bunker. The front right greenside bunker catches many approach shots.

Page 11: THE CHISLEHURST GOLF CLUB ANNUAL CORPORATE BROCHURE 2013 – 2014

www.chislehurstgolfclub.co.uk CHISLEHURST GOLF CLUB | 11 |

Hole 5

Although the shortest hole on the course, a well bunkered and sloping green provides a challenging tee shot and an inevitably tricky putt for birdie.

Hole 6

A drive down the left side of this left to right sloping fairway is ideal as errant tee shots right will be blocked out by trees. Your approach to the right to left sloping green is difficult to judge, so be mindful of the yardage.

Hole 7

A somewhat daunting par 3 which, although only a short carry over the thick rough up the incline out of the pit, is all uphill and guarded by 2 greenside bunkers. Another tricky putt awaits.

Hole 8

A long par 3 where tee shots landing short will run to the right, so beware the bunker front right lying in wait. The green slopes from left to right and subtle borrows make for a testing two putt.

Hole 9

Out of Bounds runs the length of this hole beyond the fairway to the right. A large oak to the right side of the fairway can block your approach to the slightly false-fronted green.

Hole 10

A tough par 3 well-bunkered to the front, left and right. Getting your yardage right here is a must.

Page 12: THE CHISLEHURST GOLF CLUB ANNUAL CORPORATE BROCHURE 2013 – 2014

TAKE THE COURSE TOUR continued

Hole 11

A demanding par 4 requiring a good drive, threading your tee shot through an avenue of trees, to find the fairway guarded by bunkers left and right. A down-hill approach plays short with Out of Bounds left and bunkers guarding the green to the front and right.

Hole 12

An elevated tee on this par 3 requires a short iron to a sloping green protected by four bunkers. The hole plays shorter than you think, and you are unlikely to be left with a straight putt.

Hole 13

An almost blind par 3 with the treacherous green concealed in a valley. Once on the green you are faced with a putt that is virtually guaranteed to wander off sideways.

Hole 14

An uphill drive with a fairway bunker on the ideal line down the right to challenge your tee shot. Another fairway bunker faces your second so your position is essential on this reachable par 5 where a greenside bunker to the right will catch any pushed approach.

Page 13: THE CHISLEHURST GOLF CLUB ANNUAL CORPORATE BROCHURE 2013 – 2014

www.chislehurstgolfclub.co.uk CHISLEHURST GOLF CLUB | 13 |

Hole 15

The left to right sloping fairway leaves the ball below your feet for your approach shot which will filter in from the left on account of a steep bank greenside left. A ridge runs through the green making a demanding two putt.

Hole 16

Your drive across the 1st fairway must avoid the bunkers to the left to leave an approach shot to the two-tiered green with Out of Bounds lying in wait beyond.

Hole 17

Out of Bounds runs the length of the left side of this card-wrecking par 3. A shot missed right leaves a downhill chip to the sharply sloping green.

Hole 18

This short par 4 finish with Out of Bounds left requires a lay-up short of the bunkers straddling the fairway. Longer hitters may choose to take on the green which is also guarded by bunkers left, front and right, so position is essential.

BECOMING A MEMBER

There can be no greater appeal than that of becoming a member of an historic golf club with a clubhouse literally fit for royalty but without the requirement to pay a King’s ransom for the privilege. With a friendly, welcoming membership, a full golfing diary and a lively and varied social calendar Chislehurst Golf Club is certainly the club for you.

We currently have a limited number of vacancies in the playing and social member categories. Applicants are required to submit an application form prior to the formality of attending a brief meeting with the Captain, Lady Captain and General Manager at which all

applicants have the opportunity of establishing exactly what they are seeking from membership of the Club.

Once playing members are on board, unless they have transferred an existing handicap from a previous club, they are simply required to submit three cards signed by another member or a player with a recognised CONGU handicap in order to attain a handicap which then entitles play in all competitions.

In addition to a subscription an entrance fee is payable which goes towards helping the Club to maintain the expected high standards for which we are renowned.

Annual subscriptions and any entrance fees for new members can be paid direct into the Club’s account or by instalments should the member so wish. The Club offers attractive rates across all playing categories, from the Veterans to Full and Five Day to Intermediate through to the Juniors, as well as to social members and the application process could not be simpler.

For full details contact the General Manager in writing to the Club, via e-mail to

[email protected] or by phone on 020 8467 2782.

MEMBERSHIP

Chislehurst Golf Club is a traditional Members’ Club and welcomes enquiries from all applicants seeking golfing or social membership. Golfing membership embraces both Full and Five Day categories, and we currently have limited availability in both. Temporary Membership may be offered to those moving into the area unable to find sponsors for their membership applications and to enable them to play, and get to know, other members.

MEMBER BENEFITSBoth the Men’s and Ladies’ sections have full golfing calendars for social and competitive golf. There are plenty of mixed competitions which are well supported. The men have a “turn up and play” roll-up four ball system on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday mornings specifically to enable members to vary their golfing partnerships and meet other members. We have no need for, and consequently do not operate, any system of reserved tee-off times for social golf.

Chislehurst Golf Club is ‘one club’, with both our men and our ladies enjoying full playing rights. The Club is now a member of the Association of James Braid Courses. The benefits of subscribing to the Association include members being able to play at all other clubs within the Association for a reduced green fee, subject to tee time availability, thereby hopefully increasing the awareness of Braid’s work and, of course, the man himself. There is no cost to subscribe to the Association. Full details can be found on the James Braid Association page within the Members’ Area on our website.

OUR ROOMS

Dining RoomThe Eugenie Room has a wonderful atmosphere. It is a visually stunning room enhanced by its 18th Century oak paneling, which was rescued from Chateau de Bercy, a former hunting lodge of Louis XIII. As such, the room brings the formality and pomp desired to truly mark a particularly important event or occasion. This, our largest and grandest room, can accommodate up to 76 guests on round tables or 100 on a straight table format. Other table configurations are possible for smaller parties.

Oval RoomOur Oval Room dates back to 1780, and was originally the main entrance to the house. This magnificent room is both unusual in its shape and noteworthy

because of its decoration. A series of floor to ceiling wall painting in Dutch style depict a lavish lifestyle and combined with the French doors which open to the grounds, give it a spacious, yet friendly, feel. An added advantage with its room is that it can be opened up into the Imperial Lounge for those larger events, or is the perfect choice for a small reception or celebration.

Page 33: THE CHISLEHURST GOLF CLUB ANNUAL CORPORATE BROCHURE 2013 – 2014

Mixed LoungeBeing part of the original house that was built in 1717 and containing newly restored wall paintings, many of which depict the house in its various forms throughout the years, this impressive room makes the perfect setting for holding drinks receptions following wedding ceremonies. With incredible floor to ceiling windows, evident of the building’s classic Georgian heritage, allowing guests uninterrupted views of the grounds, it is truly a space for celebrating a grand event. There is a bar located in the room which is optional and can be utilized for post ceremony drinks.
