The Fox’s Trot

Often times we Christians get bent out of shape when a card says “Merry Xmas”. We think that people have “Xed” out Christ. However, I am going to suggest that they have not “Xed” out Christ. You see X is the Greek symbol “Chi”, which is the first letter for Christ. In the church we use the “ChiRho symbol”, an X with a P in the middle of it, which means Christ. The X alone means Christ as well. Now if we use the symbol in church, is it not alright to use on a card? Here is my logic or equa-tion if you will:

If X = Christ then X + mas = Christmas. Let us pray. O God, we give thanks to you for the sending of your Son. We ask that you

now send your Holy Spirit to dwell in us and among us this Advent and Christmas season. Wrap us in your warm embrace and help us to remember your unconditional love for us. Amen.

Merry Xmas, Vicar Dave

St. John’s Lutheran Church Newsletter 4

Care to have some fun, keep your family communicating every night, and grow in your understanding of yourself and God? Try this simple five-step process for the next six weeks and see if it doesn’t help! Here’s how you do it: Whoever is going to

bed first in your home (or going to work in my house) calls “FAITH 5” or “Huddle Up!” Everyone must drop what they’re doing, turn off the television, put down the newspaper or their homework, set the cell phone on silence, stop texting and gather in a room of the convener’s choice. Then take turns going through these five simple steps:

1. SHARE highs & lows of the day 2. READ and highlight a verse of Scripture in your Bible 3. TALK about how the verse relates to your highs & lows 4. PRAY for your highs & lows, for your family, and for the world 5. BLESS one another You want a great relationship with your kids? You want openness, honesty, caring and sharing in your family? You want to raise a child to be a strong, thoughtful, empathetic, positive, healthy adult out in the world some day? You can’t buy that. You have to invest in it. And the investment is the most expensive currency you own – your TIME – aimed at that most precious young person in your life. Kids spell love TIME. Be intentional. Be consistent. Be caring. Be the parent. Every night. Every home. No one else can do that for you. Four Questions 1. For Parents of Young Children: What would it be worth to you to have a teenager, some day, who won’t go to sleep without talking to you about their day? Praying with you? Blessing you? Would it be worth five minutes? Tonight? Every night? 2. For Parents of Pre-Teens: What would happen to your family over time if you were able to keep this open, caring communication going every night throughout adolescence? 3. For Parents of Teenagers: Once the teen years begin and drivers’ licenses come into play, communi-cation between parents and teens can become a challenge. How might this type of five-minute conver-sation change a family if they were intentional and consistent about it? Would the benefits outweigh the hassle of trying to invest this time of care, listening, and prayer each night in your home? Why or why not? 4. For Church Leaders: What would happen to a family over time if they made an intentional point of doing the Faith 5 most every night? What would hap-pen to your church five years from today if the major-ity of your households were doing active listening,

scripture, faith talk, prayer, and blessings every night? As a congregation, St. John’s is going to provide a placemat for each family which includes the scripture for the day. Get the Bible out and read and share in God’s word as we dive into the Gospel of Luke for the next 6 weeks. Each week, we will celebrate fami-lies and individuals spending time in the word. If you spend at least 5 nights doing the FAITH 5 a strip of paper will go on the cross in the church. We want to fill it up with family time, with the word of God. EVE-RYONE is expected to participate. On January 10, we will have a celebration of our FAITH 5 Cross.

A Note from the Spiritual Gifts Coordinator…

The year 2009 is quickly becoming history. This has been an incredible year of community outreach for our congregation. St. John’s has left a mark on our com-munity, we have given our hearts, souls and gifts, and we have been the hands and feet of our Lord. Janu-ary was the month of the dinner- we served 100 Low Country Boil Dinners to benefit Biggerstaff, and a week later served 350 spaghetti dinners to benefit the Biemann family. I am still amazed at how we came together and did it! We continued sending care pack-ages to deployed soldiers until they all came home. In April we conducted a blood drive for the Blood Con-nection. Early in May we did the impossible-INASMUCH/Join Hands Day which put our congrega-tion all over Oconee County helping and caring. In July we reached out to the youth in the community by hosting Vacation Bible School, our mission was to make a donation to our neighbor- St. Luke United Methodist- destroyed by fire. In August we began our involvement in “Lunch for Life-Food for the Soul,” reaching out with a meal to those in Walhalla who need to see God’s love. In September we prepared spaghetti dinner for the Middle School football team. We also collected 600 pairs of shoes- Soles4Souls- unbelievable! In October it was Coats for Christ- 337 of them- coordinating our efforts with Ascension Epis-copal Church in Seneca. We fought the elements at Oktoberfest and donated our proceeds to Oconee A.I.D. and the United Way Diaper Fund. The Minis-ter’s Cook-Off and Craft & Market Day in November benefited Safe Harbor- women’s shelters in Ander-son, Pickens and Oconee County. Once again we will prepare, assemble and deliver 400 meals to the needy in Oconee County on Christmas Eve. St John’s is a relatively small congregation with a very large heart! How can we top 2009 in 2010? One can only imagine the possibilities. I wish each of you a Christ-mas filled with Christ and a New-Year filled with hope and love. God bless all of you for the gifts you have used this year. No words can express my apprecia-tion for all you have given.

AUXILIARIES OCONEE A.I.D.: The Men in Mission are asking for donations to Oconee A.I.D. for the month of Decem-ber. Items needed are: warm clothing, adult gloves, hats, soup, and fruit juice. These items or cash dona-tions would be very much appreciated.

WELCA words from Libby Sometimes we have to wait a while to realize just how our hard work pays off. This was the case at our October WELCA meeting. Betty Wallace presented Patty Shepard a check for $1,924.51 from the pro-ceeds of the Tour of Tables for the Kitchen Remodel-ing Fund. This has helped with the latest additions which we're all enjoying as we use the church kitchen. Results from our Oktoberfest are also in. Even with the rainy weather and muddy field, we were quite suc-cessful with our bake sale. With the Thrivent supple-ment WELCA received $779.45 which we gave to Family Friends Diaper Fund at United Way. Thanks again to everyone who helped with the Oktoberfest project. Our year is coming to an end, but we have already begun planning next year's activities. It's exciting to have so many women anxious and eager to plan and help with all the outreach projects our church is in-volved in. On December 15 we will meet at the Hallman home for our Christmas party. Bring your favorite Christmas snack food, and join us at 6:30 p.m. Spouses are welcome. Thank you Harvey and Fredi for opening your home to us.

WELCA Christmas Party Plan to spend an evening hosted by Harvey and Fredi Hallman in their home on December 15th for our annual Christmas party. All ladies are invited and are

welcome to bring their spouses. Punch will be pro-vided. Bring your favorite hors d'oeuvre to share. Our evening together will begin at 6:30. Hope to see a lot of you there. Remember, all women in the church are WELCA members.

St. John’s Knitters & Crocheters: We made new items for the Craft & Market Day on Saturday, No-vember 14, and a total of $206.50 was given to Women Alive. Our prayer shawl ministry continues, and we gave prayer shawls to the Davis Family, June Shobe, and Carol Anderson. December 9 will be our only meeting this month. If you need handmade gift items, contact Barbara @ 638-8818. If you would like to learn/renew knitting/crocheting talents during an evening (in January or February) because you work during days, please contact Barbara.

The next meeting of the Stewards of God's Creation will be Monday, December 14th, at 7:00 in the Fellow-ship Hall. Please join us, and bring your ideas.

PrePrePrePre----SchoolSchoolSchoolSchool————Christmas is coming, and the sounds, the smells, and the excitement of the season

are all around us. The children are always letting us know what Santa is bringing or what they are

hoping for. We will be teaching about love, and the act of giving, along with kindness to one another

this month. Each class will adopt a local child for Christmas, they will buy gifts, wrap them, and send

them with love. Allowing our children to participate in this small act of kindness will enable the chil-

dren to learn compassion and the joy of doing for others. Our Christmas program is scheduled for

Thursday, December 17th, at 6:00 p.m. Everyone is welcomed and encouraged to join us. As we close

out another year, I would like to thank everyone for all your kind words of encouragement, your notes

of praise to the teacher’s and myself as well as all your prayers for the preschool program. Without

the support and blessings of the church, we could not do what we do for our community and for all

the families that attend the preschool. God Bless each and everyone of you, and we wish you a Happy

and Safe Christmas.

Sound Bites Three golfers were walking down the ninth fairway and one announced, “It’s windy today.” Another replied, “Oh, I’m sure it’s Thursday.” The third one said, “Yeah, me too. Let’s stop at the clubhouse for a drink.” This is a humorous example of bluffing. Golfers two and three didn’t understand everything the prior man had said, but they didn’t want to admit it. They tried to make sense out of the sounds they did hear and cre-ated a sentence that made sense to them. Then they responded to that sentence. People with hearing loss often bluff during conversa-tions. Doing so can have funny outcomes, such as the example above. However, there are many other ex-changes where a hearing impaired person gives an inappropriate response and the other person thinks, “What a strange reply.” There even have been cases where a hearing impaired person lost his job because he acted on a misunderstood direction.

Don’t try to hide your hearing loss. Ask for a repeat or rephrasing of a comment or question you don’t un-derstand. There may be some unkind comments from those who don’t know of your difficulty, but most people will be very helpful if they are aware of your hearing loss.

Grief Care Corner By Edwina K. Wicker

(In memory of Mrs. Luanne Mayer—Reprinted from December 2008 issue)

Luke 2:7—She gave birth to her first son, wrapped him in cloths and laid him in a manger—there was no room for them to stay in the inn. (Today’s English Version) I ventured into my creative side in October by participating in a basic drawing class. During one class, the instructor taught us to draw negative space which is the empty space in and around an object. Focusing on the emptiness accentuates the positive space and that forces the object onto the paper. I thought about this emptiness when I attended a funeral recently. I sat in the balcony, at church, and peered over the rail at the casket near the altar. Although the pews were filled with family and friends, there was an empty space among those attending the funeral. Death had left family members and friends hurting, sorrowful, and empty. A loss leaves a gap everywhere—in hearts, pews, and at dining tables. As we grieve, we heal, and as we heal, we recall love and memories. With the passing of time and healing, the loving memories project a posi-tive image on our hearts for eternity. The positive is pushed forward after we learn to live with and manage the emptiness of loss. During this holiday season, there may be an empty space at our tables for the first time, or maybe we have already begun to slide the chairs around the table a little closer together. The space may be fresh and raw or it may have begun to heal and fill us with good memories. Our loved ones remain in our hearts as we heal and close the gap of loss. Mary and Joseph found an empty space in a stable because there was no room for them in the inn. Jesus came to us in the emptiness of that stable more than two thousand years ago. He continues to meet us in our empty spaces today to bring us comfort, heal us, and remind us to celebrate life.

Dear Jesus, You entered the world in the vacancy of a stable and you remain with us during all times. When our emptiness causes ache, give us gentle reminders that you are present. Amen.

Project Status Reports as of October 30, 2009

Biggerstaff/SCLRC Project – In August 2006 our congregation approved, in principle, partnering with the SC Lutheran Retreat Centers, the ultimate goal to ‘make Biggerstaff a year-round destination for the faithful throughout the Synod and the nation’.

Thus, Biggerstaff would become the up-state site to complement Camp Kinard in the mid-lands and Coastal retreat on Isle of Palms.

Synod approved a five year, 7.5 million dollar Capital Campaign for raising funds for the three sites, the ‘Building, Renewing, Believing Campaign’.

Of the total, Biggerstaff was allocated 3.7m, Kinard & Coastal 1.9 million each. First priority being Coastal followed by Kinard, with us last.

The pending ‘Agreement to Lease’ will allow St John’s to retain all monies generated until such time as the actual ‘Ground Lease’ is executed, which, in turn, will not occur until the SCLRC is in position to begin con-struction within six months and have expectations that the project will be completed within two years.

Capital Campaign $36059.75

Kitchen Remodel Project: This project is now com-pleted.

Long-Range Building Plan: The congregation ap-proved borrowing $ 7,608.69 from the Cemetery Fund to pay for costs associated with a proposed Long Range Building Plan. This money must be repaid to the Cemetery Fund. Although it will be included in the 2010 budget, contributions can currently be made. Please mark your envelope accordingly.

$-7483.69
