Pastor Lundula’s Greeting—July 27, 2015
Overwhelmed by God
I always feel inspired by Big Daddy Weave’s song "Overwhelmed." Most of us use
the word ‘overwhelmed’ based on situations we face in our lives. The Overwhelmed
song always takes me to a new dimension of being overwhelmed not only by the chal-
lenges of this life but by God's mercy.
Many times after we sing this at our Saturday night worship service, I always feel the
blessing of God's grace, love and mercy overwhelming my spirit. One day I also heard
my wife teaching our children that same song that has become part of our family
prayer time. Yes, my family and I feel overwhelmed by the blessing of being part of
your lives and journeying together in the Body of Christ regardless of our differences.
If we look in the Holy Scriptures, we can learn that many people were overwhelmed
by God in many ways. Moses was overwhelmed by God’s calling at the burning bush,
Isaiah was overwhelmed by God’s glory after the death of the King Uzziah, the people
of Israel were overwhelmed with God’s provision in the wilderness, etc. Friends, it is
true that we live in a society that keeps us feeling overwhelmed by our many commit-
ments, many concerns, many schedules, and all kinds of challenges of this life.
Regardless of all these, have you ever felt overwhelmed by the blessing of God’s
presence in your life?
As you are aware, two weeks ago, I felt overwhelmed by God's presence while at the
Mt. T.O.P. The main theme of this year was “Overwhelmed,” and for sure it was over-
whelming to contemplate the beauty of God’s creation through the big mountains and
valleys of Tennessee, rivers and the rocks. It was overwhelming to see many dedicated
young men and women never getting tired to lead us in prayer and in the presence of
God. It was overwhelming to learn from the experience of those served Mt. T.O.P. for
many years. Surely, it was overwhelming.
Just as the Big Daddy Weave band sang saying, "God, I run into your arms. Un-
ashamed because of mercy. I’m overwhelmed, I’m overwhelmed by you"; regardless of
what is overwhelming our spirit today, let us now run into the arms of our God with
hope and faith, without fear and unashamed to be overwhelmed by God’s love and
mercy that were revealed to the world through Christ Jesus.
In Christ,
Rev. Dr. Okitakoyi Lundula

I have just returned from spending a week with our youth in Ten-
nessee at our annual trip to Mt. TOP. It has been 18 years since I
was last on the mountain. When we arrived at Camp Baker
Mountain on Sunday we learned that this year’s theme was Over-
whelmed. We heard that word used lots during our time in Ten-
nessee. We thought about the fact that we often associate the
word overwhelmed with being overwhelmed by the stresses in
life. However, the staff at Baker Mountain challenged us to re-
think our definition of overwhelmed and experience being over-
whelmed by God.
I will admit that my week began by being overwhelmed by the
stresses life. I had to leave my family and make sure that I had
everyone’s schedules straightened out. I was stressed about leav-
ing the comforts of home and the fear that I would be missing
something I would need while on the mountain. I was also very
worried about being back in an environment that I hadn’t been in
for a long time. This year I was returning, not as a youth, but as
an adult. I was also traveling without my “go to” people I had
always travelled with. Jim and Marcia Young were my support
people at Mt. TOP and travelling without them felt strange. What
happened over the week at Mt. TOP will forever change my out-
look on the word overwhelmed. I became totally and completely
overwhelmed by God’s glory. I got to watch as a group of rela-
tive strangers came together to form a community almost over-
night. When we first arrived everyone was grouped with their
church, all wearing different shirts. However, by Monday night
you couldn’t tell who belonged to what group. Everyone was
connecting with everyone. I got lucky enough to work with a
group of youth and one other adult that despite the heat and frus-
tration never gave up on a construction project until we had
reached a point that was beyond our expertise. Whenever I felt
that I had reached my point of stopping one of the youth would
step up and give us all the encouragement we needed to keep
going. I saw the tears of the women whose porch we just painted
because since her husband died 6 months earlier she could no
longer physically or financially tackle the outside chores.
I got to reconnect with someone who had an influence on my
time at Mt. TOP 18 years ago. On Sunday evening we had dis-
covered that one of the other adults in camp was the adult in my
YRG when I attended as a youth in 1996. It was so great to catch
up on our lives. I watched as the youth at camp shared their faith
openly and freely. We often get frustrated with youth because
they don’t communicate with adults. We find ourselves wishing
they would share more about life and we almost never get them
to talk about their faith. I also watched those same youth turn to
each other when they were overwhelmed by emotions.
Finally, I got to share in that experience with the people of our
church, most importantly my daughter. There are so many ways
that I could share with you that showed just how we were over-
whelmed by God during our time at Mt. TOP, but there are truly
no words that can easily convey it. Within the next few days,
weeks, months, you will hear lots of Mt. TOP stories. I urge you
to listen to those stories. We may laugh at some and we will cer-
tainly cry, but by listening to these stories you can get a glimpse
of God’s overwhelming glory that shone down on us while on
the mountain. That same glory followed us back down into the
valley.
