Becoming Holy Families Jesus, Mary and Joseph lived God’s plan for every family as “an intimate community of life and love,” with the mission of guarding, revealing and communicating that love. This mission can be divided into four parts: 1) forming a community of persons; 2) serving life; 3) participating in the development of society; 4) sharing in the life and mission of the Church. (Familiaris Consortio, 1981, St. Pope John Paul II, #17. Much of this reflection is taken from that very important document.) Mary and Joseph formed a family, a community of persons, by giving of themselves in true love to God and to each other. They not only loved and supported each other, but they both obeyed the will of God, which was expressed to them through angels. That true mutual gift of themselves to each other and to God united them together and prepared them for the difficult sacrifices they would make in raising Jesus. When the Virgin Mary conceived through the power of the Holy Spirit, and Jesus grew in their family, He gave of Himself to His mother and His foster father by respecting them and by obeying them. And of course Jesus perfectly did the will of His Heavenly Father. So Jesus, Mary and Joseph were united as one community, one family, by the constant loving gift of themselves to their Heavenly Father and to each other! The self-giving love of the Holy Family was life-affirming. Mary and Joseph served life first by their willingness to accept the child whom God chose to send to them, and by nurturing and protecting Him. The Holy Family continued to serve life in one sense by physically helping each other and by working together for the physical good of each other. But in a far more profound way, they served life through the mission of Jesus, which was to make eternal life possible for all of us! The Holy Family participated in the development of their society in one way by the carpentry work done first by Joseph “the just man,” and later by Jesus Himself. The Bible also tells us of how Mary took part in her society by helping the newlyweds at a wedding feast in Cana. But the greatest contribution Mary and Joseph made to society was by their support of Jesus, who lived and preached the virtues which are essential for a healthy society. The Holy Family shared in the life and mission of the Church as a “Church in miniature.” Mary and Joseph, as persons of great faith and love, certainly did their part to make their family a “domestic church.” As a community of deep prayer and of daily acts of kindness, the Holy Family in itself advanced the Kingdom of God and gave fruit in the public ministry of Jesus. Of course none of our families can expect to attain the holiness of the Holy Family, but all of us can, with God’s help become holy families. God wants every family to become an intimate community of life and love, with the four-fold mission discussed above. Parents and children, by their daily sacrificial giving of themselves to God and to each other, become truly united in love as one community of persons. The parents serve life NOT simply by having children, but by educating them well, especially in a truly Christ-like love and through growth in all the virtues. And the children serve life by respecting their parents and siblings and by helping their families.

Every family is called by God to participate in the development of our society. We do this by being active in our larger communities, working for the benefit of all. And we are called to share in the life and mission of the Church by our devotion to God, our prayer life and our charity to others. We also contribute greatly to the good of the Church by our active participation in the sacraments and our work to bring the Gospel, the good news of God’s love, to others. May the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph help all of us to be holy families!

Special Charitable Deduction for 2020

The “CARES ACT” provides for a special

charitable deduction this year (2020), even for

taxpayers who do not itemize their deductions.

This is a special one-time deduction of up to

$300 for cash contributions made this year to

qualifying organizations [501 ©(3)], which are

religious, charitable, educational, scientific or

literary in purpose. St. Patrick Church is a

qualifying organization! The deduction will

basically reduce the amount of your taxable

income.

To qualify, your contributions must be given

this year. If you have any questions, be sure to

consult your accountant or tax preparer.

Holy Mass All of our regular Masses are open to the public (see front cover). Everyone over the age of 2 must wear a facemask. If you are feeling sick, coughing or sneezing, please stay at home at this time. There is currently no obligation to attend Mass. All our Mass-es can be seen online at our website: stpatricklaredo.org

Confessions

Confessions will be in the main church Monday and Wednesday at 7:30 pm, and Saturday at 2 pm. Confessions will be in

the parish hall 30 minutes before each Sunday Mass. You must wear a face-

mask and stand in line with social distancing while waiting for confes-

sion.

Sunday Bulletin Our weekly bulletins have articles and the latest announcements for our parishioners. They are available in our church and in a box in front of the parish office. You can also see our bulletins online at our website: stpatricklaredo.org

For all other questions, please call our office dur-ing the hours listed on the front page. Donations can be dropped off at the slot in the door of the parish office, or you can sign up for easy online giving at our web-site. If you need to visit our office for any reason, you must wear a facemask, and do NOT visit if you are sick! Remember the beautiful advice of St. Padre Pio, “Pray, hope and don’t worry!”

Convertirse en Santas Familias Jesús, María y José vivieron el plan de Dios para cada familia como "una comunidad íntima de vida y amor," con la misión de custodiar, revelar y comunicar ese amor. Esta misión se puede dividir en cuatro partes: 1) formar una comunidad de personas; 2) servir a la vida; 3) participar en el desarrollo de la sociedad; 4) participación en la vida y misión de la Iglesia. (Familiaris Consortio, 1981, San Papa Juan Pablo II, # 17. Gran parte de esta reflexión se toma de ese documento tan importante). María y José formaron una familia, una comunidad de personas, entregándose en verdadero amor a Dios y el uno al otro. No solo se amaban y se apoyaban, sino que ambos obedecían la voluntad de Dios, que les fue expresada a través de los ángeles. Ese verdadero don mutuo de sí mismos a los demás y a Dios los unió y los preparó para los difíciles sacrificios que harían al criar a Jesús. Cuando la Virgen María concibió por el poder del Espíritu Santo, y Jesús creció en su familia, Él se entregó a Su madre y Su padre adoptivo al respetarlos y obedecerlos. Y, por supuesto, Jesús hizo perfectamente la voluntad de Su Padre Celestial. ¡Así que Jesús, María y José estaban unidos como una comunidad, una familia, por el constante don amoroso de sí mismos a su Padre Celestial y el uno al otro! El amor abnegado de la Sagrada Familia afirmaba la vida. María y José sirvieron a la vida primero al estar dispuestos a aceptar al niño que Dios eligió enviarles, y al cuidarlo y protegerlo. La Sagrada Familia continuó sirviendo a la vida en un sentido ayudándose físicamente unos a otros y trabajando juntos por el bien físico de los demás. Pero de una manera mucho más profunda, sirvieron a la vida a través de la misión de Jesús, ¡que era hacer posible la vida eterna para todos nosotros! La Sagrada Familia participó en el desarrollo de su sociedad de una manera por el trabajo de carpintería realizado primero por José "el hombre justo," y luego por Jesús Mismo. La Biblia también nos cuenta cómo María participó en su sociedad ayudando a los recién casados en una fiesta de bodas en Caná. Pero la mayor contribución que María y José hicieron a la sociedad fue su apoyo a Jesús, quien vivió y predicó las virtudes que son esenciales para una sociedad sana. La Sagrada Familia participó en la vida y misión de la Iglesia como una "Iglesia en miniatura". María y José, como personas de gran fe y amor, ciertamente hicieron su parte para hacer de su familia una “iglesia doméstica.” Como comunidad de profunda oración y de actos cotidianos de bondad, la Sagrada Familia en sí misma hizo avanzar el Reino de Dios y dio fruto en el ministerio público de Jesús. Por supuesto, ninguna de nuestras familias puede esperar alcanzar la santidad de la Sagrada Familia, pero todos podemos, con la ayuda de Dios, convertirnos en familias santas. Dios quiere que cada familia se convierta en una comunidad íntima de vida y amor, con la misión cuádruple discutida anteriormente. Los padres y los hijos, por su entrega diaria de sacrificio a Dios y a los demás, se unen verdaderamente en el amor como una comunidad de personas. Y estamos llamados a participar en la vida y misión de la Iglesia por nuestra devoción a Dios, nuestra vida de oración y nuestra caridad hacia los demás. También contribuimos enormemente al bien de la Iglesia mediante nuestra participación activa en los sacramentos y nuestro trabajo para llevar el Evangelio, las buenas nuevas del amor de Dios, a los demás. ¡Que la Sagrada Familia de Jesús, María y José nos ayude a todos a ser familias santas!

Father of goodness and love, hear our prayers for the sick members of our community

and for all who are in need. Amid mental and physical suffering may they find conso-

lation in your healing presence. Show your mercy as you close wounds, cure illnesses,

make broken bodies whole and free downcast spirits. May these special people find

lasting health and deliverance, and so join us in thanking you for all your gifts. We

ask this through our Lord Jesus who healed those who believed. Amen!
