The Chemistry of An Explosive TV Property
A Good Run For Breaking Bad
● Aug. 11 premiere drew 5.9 million viewers, a new record and 102% increase over last summer’s season 5 opener.
● First season (2008) drew critical acclaim. Since, Breaking Bad has won numerous awards, including seven Emmys with lead actor Bryan Cranston claiming three.
● Finale to air on Sept. 29.
● Anonymous NY Times source says remaining ad inventory could sell at network rates: $200 to $300 K per 30 seconds.
Even Badder Than The Walking Dead
Winning the Game of Thrones
● HBO ratings winner attracted 4.37 million for the season 3 premiere and another 5.39 million viewers for the finale, both short of last Sunday’s opener for the final half-season of Breaking Bad.
● On Netflix, the show’s 4.7 million ratings outranks Mad Men and popular original series House of Cards. Among AMC shows, only The Walking Dead and its 5.1 million ratings rank higher.
Talking Bad -- Literally
● New aftershow Talking Bad follows the model adopted with The Walking Dead. More than 1.2 million viewers stuck around to watch the discussion.
● Hosted by Nerdist founder Chris Hardwick, whose podcast also draws millions of listeners.
High Times for AMC Investors
● New 52-week high of $72.46 established on Aug. 8, 2013.
● Shares of AMC up 30% year to date and more than 55% over the past year.
● Average 1-year price target = $75.43, according to Yahoo! Finance.
“Advertisers also continue to respond to our programming. In the second quarter, the National Networks grew advertising revenue 14% over the prior year. During the recently completed advertising upfront market, we took advantage of its success and of our growing ratings for our original programming.”
-- AMC chief executive Josh Sapan

A Potent Mixture of Scripted and Unscripted Shows
Breaking Bad Rules
Multi-channel presence allows fans to engage with the show’s characters and story long after episodes have aired. Also, increases odds of attracting new viewers, and thereby, creating growth for AMC:
● Spin-off centering on criminal lawyer Saul Goodman (played by Bob Odenkirk) in development, though a series hasn’t been confirmed.
● All Things Bad comic book released at San Diego Comic-Con as a catch-up guide for new viewers.
