    Lets Hear it for Almigal

Speaker Laura Van Epps By Sheila Morris and Carol Zeber

A teacher in the migrant education program for seventeen years, Laura teaches the Pre-K class of twenty migrant workers children at Markham Elementary School. Of the thirty-two classes in the State, Lauras was chosen as the very best. One of Lauras goals during the school year is to teach the 4-5 year-olds English. She brought a couple of the handwriting books the club purchased this year for the children, which she uses as an aid in teaching the children. Giving her presentation with much emotion Laura told the Club she feels blessed to be doing this job. She recalled some of the many things QI of Fort Lauderdale has done for the children over the years. Her passion for her job and for the children who are so important to her was very evident and she expressed her gratitude for the help the Club has given.

During the Q&A after Lauras talk, it was found that a number of the children in the class and those that she tutors really need socks and underwear. She was asked by the members and has responded with a list of those children, what they need and sizes. An assignment sign-up sheet will be available shortly.

We were all glad to see Carol Zeber today for a number of years she was our Club Executive Secretary and today was our Guest Speaker. Carol is currently President of Quota International of Fort Lauderdale and she spoke about the history of Quota International and about the wonderful work being done by the local club. Quota International was founded in 1919 and is the oldest international womens service organization, with clubs in thirteen countries worldwide. Quotas mission is giving aid to disadvantaged women and children and the deaf and hard of hearing. Quota International of Fort Lauderdale has been providing service to the community and the world for fifty-eight years and Carol thanked our club for the generous donations given to help continue these projects. She gave a Power Point presentation detailing the many services provided by QI Fort Lauderdale including the annual backpack project for Gods Little Lambs, Signing Santa for the deaf children at Tamarac Elementary, annual scholarships for deaf students, and the new Listen Up! Turn It Down! program a presentation given to elementary school children teaching them the permanent damage that can be done to their hearing by listening to loud music.
