Halloween Haunted House Needs Help

The Halloween Haunted House has been a wonderful Chantilly Highlands tradition for over 10 years, regularly attracting over 400 visitors each year. We are looking for a group or organization to take over the production of this tradition.

This is a good fundraising opportunity for a Scout Troop, Youth Group, PTA, or other organization looking to raise money and earn volunteer hours for civic projects. Troop 20 will donate all the props and costumes collected over the years, so you can start with a full ensemble of tricks and treats! I will be available as needed to advise any group on running this project suc-cessfully. This is a rare opportunity to step into an existing fundraising event with an audience looking forward to participating. Everyone has a great time!

Interested parties please contact me, Mike Tillman at [email protected] or 703-

725-4558. I’ve truly enjoyed running this event for the past several years, and I hope we can find someone to carry on the tradition.

Girl Scout Cadette Troop 1286 would like to sincerely thank all of the neighborhood families who made a pet supply donation

for the Troop’s Silver Award Project. Your generosity is greatly

appreciated.

The Dulles Day Plane Pull will be held September 25, 2010, from 11am to 4pm. Free Admission and Parking!

What IS the actual Plane Pull?

A benefit for Special Olympics Virginia, the pull is a fun team competition to see which group can pull a 164,000+ pound air bus the fastest. Teams are made up of 25 members, who all line up adjacent to a huge rope attached to the aircraft. The starter signals when to start and starts the stopwatch. After the team pulls the aircraft 12 feet, the stopwatch stops and the elapsed time is recorded as the team score.

The day is more than just the Plane Pull! An entire festival has grown up around the competition, and features a wide range of events and activities for the entire fam-ily. Come check out the car show, aircraft

displays, exhibitor areas, games, & rides in the Kids Corner, live music, concessions and more! There’s even a School Bus Pull for the kids… so gather your friends and family and make a day of it!

Don’t miss this chance to get a good look at some unique aircraft! On display will be World War II and Historic Aircraft, Military Aircraft, General Aviation Aircraft and Commercial Air-craft. Pilots will be on hand to answer questions, and you can climb up for a good look into the cockpits of some of the planes.

Come check out the cars, trucks and motorcycles on display and help decide the winners in five different categories: Best Classic Car; Best Street Rod; Best Import; Best Truck; Best Motorcycle. Awards will be handed out to the top vehicles on display.

For more information go to www.dullesday.com.

The iPod Generation is losing their hearing. A new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association confirms hearing loss among teenagers has significantly increased about 30 percent in the last 15 years. According to the study, currently one out of five adoles-cents ages 12 to 19 has some evidence of hearing loss.

Until recently, little data was available to determine whether more kids were being affected, but this study, based on data from the National Health and Nutrition Examina-tion Survey conducted by a branch of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, marks a growing trend in teens to underesti-mate the dangers of noise exposure. While researchers do not point the finger at iPods and MP3 players, they do say those popular, high-volume ear buds are a big risk factor for noise-induced hearing loss.

What Parents Can Do to Stop Kids' Hearing Loss As CBS News Medical Correspondent Dr. Jennifer

Ashton said on "The Early Show," hearing loss is irre-versible and can impact a child's educa-tional, psychological and social develop-ment.

Ashton suggests parents take control of the situation before it's too late.

She advises parents limit the amount of time exposed to noise. Additionally, if necessary, Ashton said parents can use the volume limit feature on their child's iPod and lock it

with a code. Kids can also try using noise-cancelling headphones, so that the outside noise will not force them to turn up the vol-ume higher.

The full article can be found at http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/08/18/earlyshow/health/main6783920.shtml?

September is National Preparedness Month (NPM)! This awareness month is sponsored by the Ready Campaign in part-nership with Citizen Corps and the Ad Council. NPM is de-signed to encourage Americans to take simple steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, businesses, and communities. Taking these simple steps now can make a big difference in ensuring your safety and well-being and that of your loved ones.

Get a Kit

Make a Plan

Be Informed

Get a Kit

You may need to survive on your own after an emergency. This means having your own food, water, and other supplies in suffi-cient quantity to last for at least three days. Local officials and relief workers will be on the scene after a disaster, but they can-not reach everyone immediately. You could get help in hours, or it might take days. In addition, basic services such as elec-tricity, gas, water, sewage treatment, and telephones may be cut off for days, or even a week or longer, as we’ve seen happen in the metro area this summer.

Recommended Items to Include in a Basic Emergency Supply Kit:

Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation

Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food

Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both

Flashlight and extra batteries

First aid kit

Whistle to signal for help

Dust mask, to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place

Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation

Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities

Can opener for food (if kit contains canned food)

Local maps

Cell phone with chargers, inverter or solar charger

Make a Plan

Your family may not be together when disaster strikes, so it is important to plan in advance: how you will contact one another; how you will get back together; and what you will do in differ-ent situations.

See NPM on page 9

Page 9 September 2010

Family Emergency Plan

Identify an out-of town contact. It may be easier to make a long-distance phone call than to call across town, so an out-of-town contact may be in a better position to communicate among separated family members.

Be sure every member of your family knows the phone num-ber and has a cell phone, coins, or a prepaid phone card to call the emergency contact. If you have a cell phone, pro-gram that person(s) as "ICE" (In Case of Emergency) in your phone. If you are in an accident, emergency personnel will often check your ICE listings in order to get a hold of some-one you know. Make sure to tell your family and friends that you’ve listed them as emergency contacts.

Teach family members how to use text messaging. Text mes-sages can often get around network disruptions when a phone call might not be able to get through.

Subscribe to alert services, such as Fairfax County’s Com-munity Emergency Alert Network (CEAN) at http://cean.fairfaxcounty.gov. You will receive text alerts and/or e-mails to let you know about bad weather, road closings, local emergencies, etc. Sign up your new drivers and other young adults in your household as well.

Be Informed

Some of the things you can do to prepare for the unexpected, such as making an emergency supply kit and developing a fam-

NPM from page 8 ily communications plan, are the same for both a natural or man-made emergency.

However, there are important differences among potential emergencies that will impact the decisions you make and the actions you take, whether evacuate or shelter-in-place. Learn more about the potential emergencies that could happen where you live and the appropriate way to respond to them.

In addition, learn about the emergency plans that have been established in your area by your state and local government. Methods of getting your attention vary from community to community. One common method is to broadcast via emer-gency radio and TV broadcasts.

More information can be found at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/oem, www.ready.gov, www.vaemergency.com, www.citizencorps.gov, and www.fema.gov.

Don't Flush Your Medications How to Dispose of Unwanted Medicines DON’T FLUSH UNUSED MEDICINES. Why? Because they can end up in our rivers and streams. To help protect our environment, throw unused, unwanted or expired over-the-counter and prescription medi-cines in the trash. Don’t flush medicines — except when spe-cifically instructed by the label. DO THROW IN THE TRASH. The American Pharmacists Association recommends steps for safely disposing of pills and liquids. These steps will help prevent their misuse or accidental ingestion by children or pets.

1. Keep the medicines in their original container. This will help identify the contents if they are accidentally ingested.

2. Cross out your name and prescription number for safety.

3. For pills: add some salt water to start dissolving them. For liquids: add something inedible like cat litter, dirt or ash.

4. Seal the container and secure with duct or packing tape.

5. Put the container in the trash as close to pickup time as possible. Do not put in the recycle bin.
