Term 2—Week 8

The Project Based Learning Program resumed last week after further COVID-19 restrictions were eased across NSW

Schools.

Miss Mim has been working with some small groups to design some master-pieces with clay. These will be fired

over the holiday period.

The year 6 boys have been learning the music piece Malaguena on the guitar. This is a Spanish piece which is quite technical as it involves finger picking. The boys worked with me to learn and refine small sections each week. They were also able to improve their skills in musical notation and tablature. The

group presented this item to their peers.

Rose has been running some specialised programs this year to support early intervention in Literacy and Numeracy. The ABC Bootcamp is a research based program which introduces all 26 letters and sounds so that students can begin manipulating

letters and sounds to make words.

Dave and I have also been teaching the 3/6 class about the 12 bar blues as part of an intensive music program. The stu-dents use percussion, guitars, keyboards and marimbas to create sound patterns/riffs including blues

MR CAMERON’S FAREWELL

On Tuesday 30th June, Mr Cameron our wonderful General Assistant will be celebrating his final day at The Channon Public School as he is retiring at the end of the term. We would like to thank him for all of the wonderful work that he has done for our school and within the community. He has done an amazing job and his shoes will be hard to fill.

Thank you Mr Cameron also for all the years that you sat on the Channon P&C, going on the major excursion camps, teaching the children woodwork, endless working bees, The Channon Markets, Teams Day and barbeques and not forgetting marking out the oval for Teams day. The staff and students of The Channon school wish Mr Cameron all the best in his retirement and wish him lots of fond memories for the future ahead.

Mr Cameron’s Afternoon Tea

On Tuesday 30th June commencing at 2:15pm the staff and students will hold a special afternoon tea to Farewell Mr Cameron. We are still waiting to be granted permission for the P&C Committee, par-ents and members of the wider community to attend this event. If restrictions continue to ease then this might be possible. I will continue to provide an update on this.

Job Opportunity for General Assistant

The position of General Assistant at The Channon Public and Dunoon Public Schools has been advertised as two separate positions, however candidates can apply for both. There will be two separate interview panels.

Each position has been advertised on the JobsNSW website. Please refer to the following link:

https://iworkfor.nsw.gov.au/

The closing date for both positions is Thursday, 25 June, 2020.

The successful candidate/s would commence each position in July.

SICKNESS & ILLNESS

If your child is sick, they must not attend the school site. You must keep them at home and away from others. Furthermore, if a family member who lives in the same household is sick with symptoms of COVID19, please seek advice from a GP/Medical Expert and keep your child/ren at home until you have gained advice and directions from the GP/Medical Expert.

BACKYARD SPECIES DISCOVERY SCHOOL

The Channon is now registered as a Backyard Species Discovery School. Tamlin has been volunteering with Rena and students from the K/1/2 class to learn about the needs of living things. We have been observing what species are in the school ground and hope students and families might like to look at what is in their backyard.... While we can’t promise you’ll find a new species, you will discover some amazing plants and animals living in your own backyard, contribute valuable data to Australia’s official databases and become a citizen scientist. How does it work? We want you to search for organisms in your local area and upload images or sound recordings of them to our ‘Backyard Species Discovery Project’, on iNaturalist.

The Channon school has an iNaturalist account titled: Tamlin and The Channon School so if any families want to add their backyard findings to our class account please feel free.

When you add observations to iNaturalist, experts help identify them. Your record will also be added to the Atlas of Living Australia, so researchers and land managers can find and use your data. We will be highlighting the best records on social media and the Bush Blitz website. Tamlin Heathwood—Teacher Dorroughby Environmental Education Centre

STUDENT REPORTS & INTERVIEWS

The teachers will be conducting some assessments over the coming weeks with individual students, small groups and in the normal classrooms settings. This will provide teachers with some updates on where each and every student is at this point in time. The COVID-19 prompted learning to occur from home, so the NSW Department of Education have provided schools with alternative report struc-tures. As you are aware the 2020 NAPLAN will not proceed this year so classes will continue as nor-mal for the remainder of the term.

The student reports will provide an outline of the effort which students are contributing to their learning as well as detailed comments from the teachers about each particular student. The reports will be distributed from Wednesday, 24 June (week 9) onwards with opportunities for parent/teacher interviews in week 10 from Monday, 29 June to Wednesday, 1 June, face-to-face or via zoom.

School Counsellor

A ‘School Counsellor Request Form’ is attached to this newsletter. This form is to be completed, signed and dated by a parent/carer giving permission for Leanne (our school counsellor) to work with your child/ren. We are very fortunate to have Leanne as the counsellor and she brings a wealth of knowledge and experience, including past experience as a classroom teacher. Leanne communicates with parents and updates them on work done with the child. Any assessments completed by Leanne are generally done with the support and sometimes the presence of

the parent.

If you would like your child to have the opportunity to work with Leanne, please complete the form and return it to

school. School Counsellors work with and support all students, even for a quick chat and check in.

Leanne will be working in our school next Friday, 26 June. Interviews/meetings can be organised through the front

office or Mr Manser.

Mrs Cantrell—K/1/2

In Geography the K/1/2 class is continuing to learn about

Australia. We have been looking at some of the amazing natural

features of our wonderful country. Last week we learned about

rainforests, with a focus on the Daintree. This week we looked at

the Great Barrier Reef, especially the attempt to control the

dreadful Crown of Thorns starfish. In Maths we’re focusing on

place-value. The Year 2 students showed me how they are able

to put numbers to one thousand in their correct order, and use

place value to add and subtract. Errol in Year 2 even ran a

maths group showing students how to make three- and four-digit numbers using the MAB

blocks, which are valued at ones, tens, hundreds and thousands. Thanks Errol!
