Pete’s Back…as President, that is. Yeah!

Past Chapter and State President Pete Dufau has been elected President

of the Channel Islands Chapter after most recently serving as VP Resource Management. His election came once the position opened up when Katie Moldenhauer – who had been elected 2019 CI President – withdrew due to her moving out of the area.

Owner of award-winning Dufau Landscape, Pete remains active on the State level of CLCA as well, currently serving as Chair of the California

Landscape Water Conservation Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

Pete intends to continue to bring new faces onto the board to make a strong balance with current experienced Board Officers and Directors. The new board will be making a push to bring more contractors into the Chapter, as well as working to get the contrac-tors who are already members, active and involved.

I served with Pete on the State Board for a time, and always appre-ciated his reasoned decisions and his fearlessness in occasionally presenting an opposing view of a subject being considered. We are blessed to have Pete back at the helm of the Channel Islands Chapter.

CI Installation Dinner Set for Feb. 19With a new President, now we can go ahead with our postponed Installation Dinner Meeting. The new date is Tuesday, February 19 at a location to be announced. Save the date now, and we will be getting out emails and other announcements to give you the specifics of the event.

Leadership Conference Feb. 5 and LIS Feb. 6-7 Both in OntarioPete and some Board Members will be attending the Leadership Conference for new and returning chapter board members statewide. The conference will take place February 5 at the Ontario Convention Center, the day before the LIS Show is to take place at that facility on the following two days, February 6-7. Board Members, get your reservations in to Maria at State (800) 448-2522.

All Around Landscape Supply Expo and BBQ Feb. 28We close out the busy month of February by participating in the yearly Landscape Product Expo and BBQ put on by All Around Landscape Supply at the Earl Warren Showgrounds in Santa Barbara on February 28. Great food, great information, and the CI Chapter will have an information table at this FREE EVENT. (See story below.)

It has been an honor to have served the Chapter as President this year. We had our share of challenges, but we also had a lot of fun along the way. I will still be around, this year serving as Treasurer and Chairman of the Board. I look forward to seeing you at one or more of the several activities we’ll be involved in over the next few weeks. God Bless. – John

NETWORKING at the year-end meeting are Jennifer Nelson and Kyle Hillendahl. They could be discussing

some of the challenges and opportunities facing the Chapter in 2019…but probably a lighter discussion.

CI TEAM on a deck alongside the pool includes Brandon Bogeaus, Tom Lucas, Claudio Sandoval, Sr.,

Jennifer Nelson and Julio Lopez. Two of the Lucas pet dogs stopped by to visit with the group.

THREE AMIGOS – Tom Lucas, Claudio Sandoval, Jr. and Brandon Bogeaus enjoy catching up with the

latest landscaping and non-landscaping news from fellow members.

WHITE ELEPHANT gift exchange was a highlight of the party. Here, Tom Lucas scored a bottle of Double Black

Label. But will he get to keep it?

POOLSIDE WATERING hole at chez Lucas allows guests to swim up to the bar. Nice touch.

SNAP FENCE VIP Jennifer Nelson scored an adult beverage also. This was an interesting and fun way to end

a challenging but successful year for the Chapter.

SFV 2018 PRESIDENT Julio Lopez (right) is welcomed to Channel Island Chapter’s Holiday bash by

long time CI member Claudio Sandoval, Sr.

LUNCH IS SERVED – Shown gathered around the pool table/potluck table are Claudio Sandoval, Sr.,

Jennifer Nelson, Kyle Hillendahl and Kim Lucas.

PERFORMANCE NURSERIES’ Tom and Kim Lucas graciously hosted CI Chapter members and friends for a Christmas Party Potluck and White Elephant Gift

Exchange Dec. 6 at their lovely Somis home.

BIRDS IN PARADISE – One of the many exotic birds cared for on the Lucas property is this talkative

feathered friend. Kim Lucas takes care of several others as well.

BEAUTIFULLY LANDSCAPED everywhere you look, is the Lucas residence. One would think Tom Lucas owned a nursery or something. Well, he does. Thanks for

hosting, Tom.

Village Nurseries Partners with ASLA to Sponsor Landscape Architect Event at University of California South Coast REC

Village Nurseries, the West Coast division of TreeTown USA, is co-sponsoring a Landscape Architect and Design Group

event with the Southern California chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA). The event will feature four guest speakers who will provide attendees with a better understanding on the newest plant and soil requirements for today’s projects.

Launched by Village Nurseries two years ago, the Group fosters relationships with local landscape professionals, hosting events that tap into the collective wisdom of landscape architects and designers representative of regions in Southern and Northern California.

The Landscape Architect and Design Group event will be held on Thursday, January 31, 2019 at the University of California’s South Coast Research & Extension Center in Irvine, Calif.

Registration will commence at 8:30 a.m. and concludes with lunch and a plant giveaway. Opening remarks will be presented by Darren L. Haver, Ph.D., the water resources advisor and director, UC Cooperative Extension Orange County and South Coast REC, as well as by new plant specialist Nicholas Staddon, The Village Nurseries Plantsman, who has led a series of branding initiatives aimed at the landscape professional marketplace.

The first guest speaker will be Mary Matava, president and agrono-mist at Agri Service, Inc., who will discuss integrating the physical, chemical and biological parameters of soil to improve growing conditions and develop healthy soils. The mission of Agri Service is to support organic sustainability in local communities by producing

products that control erosion, improve the soil and reduce fertilizer and pesticide pollution, while reducing landfill disposal.

The second guest speaker is Joe Walker, a leading plant authority pertaining to plants from New Zealand, Australia and South Africa, who will discuss integrating those countries’ plants in the landscape.

The third set of guest speakers will provide an update on the UC Landscape Plant Irrigation Trials: Karrie Reid, environmental horti-culture advisor at the Cooperative Extension, San Joaquin County and Jared Sisneroz, researcher, UC Davis Department of Plant Sciences, College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

The company’s Landscape Architect and Design Group members are provided samples of new offerings – including unique, patented and exclusive plants that are regionally appropriate – to trial in their home gardens and office landscapes. It’s part of the company’s ongoing commitment to investing in new plant varieties as well as traditional favorites for the western United States.

“The focus of this group is to help us select plants that will provide beauty and purpose to the designs of our clients,” said Suzie Wiest, regional marketing representative for Village Nurseries. “This field testing program gives landscape professionals the opportunity to trial some of our newest introductions and provide feedback about performance. In addition, these conversations will guide us in selecting the plantings landscape professionals want to design unique, stunning landscapes.”

10 S.M.A.R.T.E.R. Goal Setting Tips By Jonathan Goldhill, The Goldhill Group

1. Choose your focus areas and set priori-ties among all competing areas, such as:

Personal Financial, Health, Family, Learning, Fun, Character, Artistic, Public Services, Social, Spiritual, Toys/Possessions

Business Financial, Leadership, Employee Management, Systems, Selling, Marketing, Customers, Work/Life Balance

2. Choose your time horizon, i.e., 30-day, 90-day, 1 year, 3 years, 5 years, 10-25 years, Lifetime. If you can, set lifetime goals and work backwards. If not, try 30 or 90 days or work forward.

3. Choose your role. Of those who set goals, most people set personal or professional goals. But, there are also many other roles in life we might wish to consider in our goal-setting. These include: business owner, parent, spouse, friend, son/daughter, brother/sister, neighbor/citizen, athlete, spiritualist/faith member, etc.

4. Only establish goals for important wants. Don’t major in minor things. Set priorities among these competing areas of focus and remove distractions from accomplishing them. Keep operational goals (stuff you are working on immediately, small and achievable).

5. State your goals precisely and in a positive voice. Set your goals in a way that they can only be answered by a clear “yes”! For example, “I earn $250K in personal takehome pay.” It always pays to be positive!

6. Be precise. Choose activity or performance goals over outcome goals. Activities are mostly controllable. Outcomes are not. So, choose more goals based on activities rather than outcomes.

7. Set S.M.A.R.T.E.R. Goals. I know we all know what S.M.A.R.T. goals are right? (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-bound.) This is a basic rule often over-looked in goal setting. Additionally, your goals must enable you to evaluate your performance. Evaluate so you know how well you’re doing and Re-adjust so you can make course corrections. Make your goals S.M.A.R.T.E.R.

8. Stretch, but don’t break, yourself. Create goals with high standards so you will always be looking and reaching up. But don’t overdo it. Effective goals are high enough to inspire you but not so high that they frustrate and discourage you.

9. Consider the “Quantum Leap” Approach. The “Quantum Leap” approach tries to force intense activity by setting a goal that will need a quantum leap in activity to achieve it. This is a dangerous technique that should be used with care – it is very easy for the whole process of goal-setting to fall into disrepute where quantum leap goals are not met.

10. Be accountable and responsible. It’s easy to forget to pursue your goals – especially when you get busy. Be sure to build accountability into your goals by writing them down, having set review periods, and most importantly, finding an accountability partner (like your coach) who will help you hold your feet to the fire and be a stand for what you truly want.

Best Business Practices

How to Get the Most Value from Customer Complaints From AllBusiness

Here are six steps to getting maximum value from customer complaints:

1. Look at things from the customer’s point of view. It’s human nature to become defensive – but to get the most from customer complaints, you need to take the opposite approach. Assume the customer is right, and look at what your business did wrong to generate the complaint. For example: • Is your return policy unclear? • Is information about your business online, such as hours of

operation, current and correct? • Is your website checkout process simple to understand?

2. Encourage complaints. Since most of us are raised to be polite, lots of customers will never complain at all – they will just take their business elsewhere. Next time you conduct a survey or focus group, specifically ask customers for negative feedback. It may take a little urging to get them to be honest, but let them know you want to hear any complaints, no matter how small. There are very few companies that do absolutely everything right. Even Nordstrom has slow shipping times for online orders compared to Amazon Prime.

3. Talk to your most loyal customers. These are the ones who will stick with you even if things start to go south, so in order for them

to complain, things have to be really wrong. If you have a loyalty program at your business, tap into the information you’ve gleaned from it to identify your most loyal customers. Then reach out to them on a regular basis with surveys and other tools to get their honest opinions.

4. Tap into technology. Freshdesk, Help Scout, ZenDesk, and Zoho Desk are four popular customer service software apps for small businesses. They can help you track customer complaints, questions, and interactions so you can respond quickly and see patterns.

5. Take action. Once you’ve listened to complaints and apologized for problems, take steps to fix them. In addition to handling indi-vidual complaints promptly, also set a regular schedule, perhaps once a month or once a quarter, to go over complaints in the aggregate. This will help you identify the most common complaints as indicators of problems with your business.

6. Communicate with customers about the actions you’re taking. It may take time to make big changes to resolve a problem with a process or policy. So your customers don’t feel frustrated, let them know you’re working on the problem. Post status updates on your website or share them in your email communications.
