For the first time since December 2014, Calgary’s residential unadjusted benchmark prices improved over the previous month. Within the city of Calgary, housing prices totaled $454,100 in May, a monthly and year-over-year increase of 0.55 and 0.96 per cent. “For the third month in the row, new listings have eased compared to last year, helping push the market toward more balanced conditions, despite the current environment of slower sales activity,” said CREB® chief economist Ann-Marie Lurie. “This has helped prevent further declines in the unadjusted benchmark price.” CREB

Organization Moving Forward

Even though I write this message in June, and October seems very far away, that time will speed by and it will be our Annual General Meeting in a blink of an eye. This year will be my last, as I come up on the final few months of my limit of four years as President. It’s been an honor to work with so many great volunteers and so many great board members. I feel that we are passing the keys to the place in great shape. We want members (residents) to step up over the summer and put themselves forward to volunteer their time for the Ramsay Com-munity Association in October.

Financials

The financial area of the organization has never been in such great hands. We have a CMA for our bookkeeper and a financial planner in the position of treasurer. They are working towards a strategic financial plan that will give us the ability to make deci-sions as an organization with confidence.

Hall Rentals

We have made big strides in the rentals of the hall, with new long term renters coming online with us. Even more encouraging is the fact that we have a huge increase of Ramsay residents renting the hall for parties, meetings, and celebrations. Contact [email protected] if you want to host your next event at the Ramsay Hall.

12th Street Bridge

The City hosted an open house in May (too late for my June message) for the proposed Zoo Bridge construction. They didn’t have design details other than the orientation (less of a bend in the road on the north side) and potential construction start dates. You can check it all out at www.calgary.ca/12st-bridge for all the updated information.

Greenline Charrette

I’m writing this message a week before the charrette for the Greenline. The fact that they have opened the workshops to the en-

tire public is fantastic. The more eyes and voices we have at the table the better. The process has been working, and I look forward to it con-tinuing to work towards the best solutions for the future of our community.

Cycle Track

The opening of the Cycle Track in down-town Calgary is a landmark event. I know already that this will be a huge success for cyclist of Calgary. One of the principles we have in our sustainable neighbourhood action plan is that we are a bike-friendly community. We are surrounded by beautiful pathways. We just need an easy and safe way to get to those pathways and as cycle track expands, I see Inglewood and Ramsay being a part of it.

Have a great summer everyone! See you around the hood!

President’s MessageKevin Cunningham, President, R.C.A. • 403.680.0854 • [email protected]

On Sunday June 21st, a delegation of Ramsay cyclists joined up with their counterparts in Inglewood to ride downtown. Their des-tination: the official opening party for the new Cycle Track.

The party at Barb Scott Park featured live music, food trucks, mobile bike repair shops, costumes and games, information booths, and a few (very short) speeches. Despite intermittent rain, every-one had a great time.

If you need to get downtown to run errands, meet friends, go to an event, go shopping, or just to enjoy the ride, the new Cycle Track gives you even more options. Parking your bike is much faster, easier, and cheaper than parking your car. For more informa-tion, visit calgary.ca/cycletrack

Many thanks to Solita Work (for designing the Ramsay/Inglewood ride t-shirt), Ward 9 (for getting the t-shirts made), Nerd Roller Skates (for organizing the Inglewood group), Kevin Cunningham (for organizing the Ramsay group), and Bike Calgary (for coordinating the rides across the city). See you on the track!

June 19-28, Wreck City took over the old Penguin Car Wash site to present DEMO TAPE, an art exhibition that used the space and materials from the car wash. We’ll have in-depth coverage in the next issue.

Hello Ward 9 Neighbours and hello summer! There aren’t many things better than being a Calgarian, during the sum-mer, who lives in one of the great Ward 9 communities of Tuxedo Park, Winston Heights-Mountview, Renfrew, Bridge-land-Riverside, Inglewood, Ramsay, Dover, Erlton, Park Hill, Manchester, Fairview, Acadia, Riverbend, or Ogden.

We are the most eclectic, diverse, and vi-brant Ward in Calgary and these characteris-tics are truly a testament to the outstanding and selfless vigilance of volunteers, great community leaders, inspired businesses, and amazing community spaces that are uniquely Ward 9.

It’s time that we indulge and revel in the spoils of our hard work.

The best way to start is by gettin’ your breakfast on!

Tuxedo Park is gearing up for their fantastic Canada Day Breakfast, to be followed by Renfrew’s Stampede Breakfast on July 4th, Riverbend’s Stampede Breakfast on July

5th, and Park Hill’s Stampede Breakfast on July 11th (come see Team Ward 9 flip some pancakes and do a line dance or two!). Later on in the evening of July 4th, join us for Ramsay’s Stampede Party!

Up in the north end of the Ward, if you’re looking for great company in a beautiful setting, check out Bridgeland-Riverside’s Farmer’s Market happening every Thursday. In Winston Heights-Mountview come out and see their beautiful community garden.

In the south end, if you’re looking to take it easy, head on down to the communities of Erlton and Rideau-Roxboro and enjoy a walk along the Elbow River. Pack a picnic basket and enjoy the grand views from El-bow Park Island. Inglewood will be kicking off their annual Fringe Festival with the Sunfest and Night Markets throughout the summer, while Acadia will be holding the much anticipated Art in the Garden Festival and their Parade of Garage Sales. For those that want to break a sweat (and then cool off) ‘Come Over to Dover’ and have fun at the beach volleyball courts and spray park! After all of that running around, go for a

nice, cool dip in one of the City of Calgary’s only outdoor pools in Millican-Ogden. Finally, in Fairview, stay tuned for the summer-ending ‘Movie in the Park’.

Join me in celebrating our amazing neigh-bourhoods. I look forward to seeing you, and encourage you to say hi and give me your ideas on how we can continue to have our Great Neighbourhoods make a Great City. Proud to be your Councillor,

Gian-Carlo twitter.com/gccarra #Great-Neighbourhoods

Hi neighbours, here is what has been happening with Civic Affairs this month.

1028 8 St SE (DP2015-1007) - Side-by-Side (Duplex)

The committee has now reviewed this project. We submitted a letter of support to the city. We appreciated that the upper decks provided privacy for the users as well as the neighbours, and we appreciated that parking was provided on site.

1019 9th Street SE (DP2015-1763) - Addition to an Existing Home

This development will see the property getting a small addition on the back as well as a larger addition on the back. As a result the heritage home will remain. The house will get red siding to match the existing garage on the site. The community submitted a letter supporting this development.

1015 8 St SE (DP2015-1666) - New Contextual House and Garage

As a contextual development, there is no opportunity for the community to provide input on the development. The plans for this development were just provided for our information. The new home will reflect the character of the neighbourhood heritage

homes with ae sloping roof and a front porch.

1046 18 Ave SE (DP2015-2201) - Site Plan Changes

This development has just come in. It will be reviewed at the next Civic Affairs Meeting. The development involves changes to site plan: new bay doors, windows and parking configuration and exte-rior building changes.

As always, if you have any questions, concerns, comments, or com-pliments, or would like more information on any project, please contact [email protected]. You are always welcome to send your own letters into the city if you have concerns with cer-tain developments as well. We are always looking for great people to join our committee. If you are interested please send us an email to get included on the email circulation list.

Civic AffairsCyril Jensen and Erin Joslin, Co-Chairs, Civic Affairs Committee

I think my Facebook status said it all on the night of the AGM last year: “Holy crap - Ramsay Community Association Board Member!” I was excited to step into this role, but at the same time I couldn’t stop thinking, “What have I done?”

So, coming up on a year later, why am I glad I took the step to join the board and why do I still enjoy being a board member? Here are my top three reasons:• The People. The best thing about being a Board Member is all

the people I have met and created friendships with. There is nothing that makes you feel more at home in your communi-ty than knowing your neighbours. This also makes attending community events much more fun. It is great to know my neighbours and it feels great to know my neighbours know me.

• Contributing to my Community. I love the feeling that I know I am contributing to the community and helping to make it a better place.

• Being Informed. Being on the Board, I get to hear all the information first hand about what is going on in the commu-nity. This information is also shared at the General Meetings, so even if you don`t want to sit on the Board, I encourage everyone in the community to attend.

Being on the board has shown me that The Ramsay Community Association Board and all the volunteers work hard for our com-munity. As many of our terms are going to come to an end, we want to encourage our neighbours to consider stepping into those roles and continue making Ramsay a great place.

My First Year as a Board Member Erin Joslin

You’re at the chalkboard in the alley behind the house on the corner of 18th Ave. SE and 9th St. SE. You’re drawing your best cowboy, finding your favourite holiday food in the word search puzzle, or telling your neighbours why you think Ramsay rocks. And you’re probably wondering: Who lives here? And how did he come up with such a great idea?

Greg and his son Neven moved into 1001 18th Ave SE three years ago. But he’s not new to the neighbourhood. His maternal great-grandfather built the house when he moved to Calgary in 1911. His grandmother, Mariel Hales, inherited the house and raised her kids Fran (Greg’s mom) and Brian in Ramsay. They at-tended Ste. Anne’s Elementary School. Greg grew up in Huntington Hills, but spent much of his childhood in Ramsay. Sunday dinner was always at his grandmother’s and he and his sister Sandy stayed over most weekends. He remembers that his grandmother did not have a car: “She power-walked everywhere with her grandkids in tow.” They had to run to keep up with her. These days Fran is a fre-quent vistor and attends all of the Ramsay community events with her son and grandson.

Mariel died in the the front room of her home. His uncle got the house because Fran already had a place to live. When his Uncle Brian died of a heart attack in the family home, Greg’s mother and sister decided that he should inherit the house since he was looking for a new place. The family advised him to tear it down because they thought the old house was beyond repair. Greg disagreed. He invested in major renovations because he thought it was important to preserve the family home and a bit of Ramsay’s heritage, too.

Renovating the old house took a lot of work. And as many of us know, past owners leave treasures behind. The motorcycle on the cover was in the garage. A scrap collector gave it to his uncle many years ago. A friend of Sandy’s recognized that it was a diamond in the rough and restored it. Greg’s happy to report that his ancestors did not leave ghosts behind - though he did confess that the first night after he moved in, he slept on the couch with the lights on! He wasn’t spooked for long. “There’s a good vibe in the house.”

Greg shares that good vibe with the neigh-bourhood. When he painted the garage grey, he was concerned that it was a perfect target for graffitti. So he decided to put up a chalkboard and to encourage people who were walking by to express themselves. His

friend owns Crestway Systems and gave him the chalkboard. It was an immediate hit! Girls are especially fond of the crossword puzzles and word searches that his friend Jody helped to create. Ramsayites have used the board to report on lost and found pets and to post community announcements. When Greg asked, “What do you love about Ramsay?” one neighbour explained that it’s the type of neigh-bourhood where people will return a stolen bike.

The Chalkboard is a community hub. Greg is pleased that 98 per cent of the messages and images have been positive. And the com-munity helps to keep it that way. He’s noticed that people will erase negative content before he even sees it. As soon as the chalkboard if full, Greg erases it and puts up a new challenge or question. In the summer, stories and pictures stay up for two or three days. It takes a bit longer to fill up in the winter. Greg takes a picture before he erases the board and plans to post them on a blog called “Chalk Talk.” The news-letter team will keep you posted.

The skateboarding owl painted on the garage door is another show-stopper. It’s the logo for Urban Tribalism, his friend Jason O’Con-ner’s art studio. The logo is based on a youtube video of an owl on a skateboard. (Google it: off-the-charts cuteness warning!) Greg liked the owl and asked if he would put it on his garage. The first mural was painted in black and white. When the owl moulted its feathers, Greg repainted it in colour. Next time, he plans to use metalic car paint to touch up the bird. People driving by stop to take selfies in front of the garage. The owl has also been featured on the back page of Swerve.

His neighbour Brian Batista created the “Ramsay: Going Strong since 1919” mural that’s beside the chalkboard. This one caused a bit of controversy because some neighbours disputed the founding date, which Greg found doing research on-line. The date has been painted over because that part of the garage needed touch ups. He’ll do some more research on Ramsay’s history before he repaints the founding date.

The front porch is a rotating gallery and announcement board. He likes to display his neighbour Brian’s art in the windows and also puts up posters for community events, like the Winterfest and Sled Island. Ramsayites are always peeking into the porch to see what’s new. It’s one of the places I depend on to find out what’s going on in the hood!

Greg’s family has deep roots in Ramsay. But it wasn’t until he was cleaning out the house to move in that he really got the feeling that he belonged in the community. He plans to stick around for a long time. “I hope I die in this house and that they have to take me out feet first, too!”

The Reality Is Optional Kids’ Writing Club has finally begun to slow down and wind up. We’ve watched our final movie, the most amazing movie ever – Dungeons and Dragons. Acting and writing skills – impeccable. The beholder was not that great. No sar-casm at all. The final Free Fall Writing involved “helpful” comics. Our last Dungeons and Dragons games were played on a clue board and involved intrigue, espionage, and murder (dun, dun, dun). Our last RIO meetings (Monday and Tuesday) were LARPing, with swords and magic spells flying. The last Pen and Panel meeting had their leader dying his hair after losing a bet with the group. Poor Sebastien. We ended with a grand party where we LARPed, ate food, saw our year end documentary, had awards, and graduated three of our members who are going on to University. Good luck Mary, Linda, and Marco!

This summer our members can be found at such camps as Word-sWorth, DramAntics, and the Girls’ Rock Camp. If you want to join these or other writing type camps go on our website for more

information. We will return sun burnt and bug bitten on September 14. For more information about us or to find out about a camp, contest, or place to submit – or to try out our new interactive, chose your own adventure story called U Mad Bro, visit our website: www.realityisoptional.weebly.com.

The City of Calgary is completing work on the park and we have a lot of new trees now planted that help define this awesome gath-ering area and provide much-needed shade! The grass is still a little slow to come in, but that’s why you see the temporary fencing.

Planning a special event? Rent the Rink.Rent the Ramsay Rink for your special event. It’s just $40/hour for exclusive use of the rink area with access to the washrooms. Contact [email protected].

What’s Happening in July at Esker Foundation

Wondering what’s up at The Project Space with the linoleum? Local artist Svea Ferguson’s “airtime” is a site-specific installation, investi-gating the material’s boundaries, possibilities, and beauty. Please join us to hear her speak July 17th, 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. with a reception to follow.

Esker Foundation’s summer programming continues in July with Naomi Potter providing an exhibition tour of Mia Feuer’s Synthetic Seasons July 19th, and for the hands-on crowd we have a wonderful papier mâché workshop with Stephanie Wong July 25th.

If lounging in the dark is more to your taste, our summer film pro-gram continues July 30th. For your viewing comfort we have massive beanbags to lounge on, and we’ll provide the popcorn for a screening of “Can’t Stop the Water”. Make sure you arrive early if you haven’t yet had the chance to lace up some ice skates and have the chance of a lifetime to skate on a sculpture! Mia Feuer’s “An Unkindness” lets guests have this unique opportunity, inviting contemplation and a good deal of fun. Please see more information and registration details at eskerfoundation.com/program/current/.

As always, admission and programing are free. Parking for your visit is complementary at the Atlantic Art Block. Follow us on Facebook for more updates and programming information. We hope to see you soon!

ArtPoint

From July 2nd to July 24th, artworks for the “$99 to Stardom” fund-raiser will be displayed in the Main Gallery. The opening reception is on Thursday, July 2nd from 5:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. The closing recep-tion and artwork pickup will be on Friday, July 24th, from 5:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. The fundraiser is in support of Hull Services - School Art Program.

In The Red Gallery: Dave Lynnes presents “Found Things”. This ex-hibition is a variety of works, things that caught my eye, things that moved me in a way that made me stop and look and more impor-tantly feel. I hope that when you explore my works you too feel and perhaps leave with a new sense of how to see the world we walk in.

In the Heritage Weavers & Spinners Guild Window: Karen King will be exhibiting tapestries reflecting the recent range of her weaving practice.

Host a Fringe Artist

The Calgary Fringe Festival is July 31st to August 8th. Ramsay homes are ideal billets for these travelling artists because we’re close to all of the venues. If you have an extra bed, or even a couch, consider hosting a Fringe artist during the festival. We would like to wish the families that are leaving the Alexandra Playschool all the best. It has been a great pleasure to meet each and every child as well as their families. We are so grateful that you chose the Alexandra Preschool to facilitate your child’s first steps in learning through play.

In a foreshadowing of current practices, the cover of the Ramsay Newsletter for July, 2005 had a photograph, but was still mostly text announc-ing Ramsay School Stampede Parking. President Vince Bodnar’s message bemoaned the cancellation of Ramsay Day, Community Cleanup and a failing Block Watch due to lack of volunteers.

Festival season was upon us, and along with it came zero tolerance for Stampede Parking scofflaws. Traffic Calming pro-vided charts and stats on our traffic - at that time up to 43% of our traffic was shortcutters: cars were clocked doing 90 down Spiller. Principal Brian Del Castilho laid out plans for Ramsay School and students

contributed to the Jack Long visioning. There was a flood. Chantelle Hughes promoted green-ing in her Earth News column, and Brenda Japp in Beautification updated Urban Forestry and Outwest Park developments. My car was stolen, Beth Carter profiled Alderman Joe Ceci and the average sale price of a Ramsay bungalow was $194,236.
