Announcing the Certification of Family Therapy Commencing 2018PREAMBLE

The certification program in family therapy is suitable for psychologists, social workers and counsellors who are cur-rently practising counselling/therapy and has the interest to cultivate skills in working with families. This program is also suitable for final year master students in counselling and psychology. The program will provide students with the opportunity to develop a solid understanding of “how to” work systemically and collaboratively with families.

Malaysia as a collectivistic society and where connectedness and support within the family system is the norm then family therapy should be considered as a primary treatment modality of choice when family relationships become problematic. Students must have a thorough understanding of the broader family context, and the capacity to engage with the family members is critical in transforming changes in the family system.

The CERTIFICATION PrograM IN FAMILY THERAPY

The certification program provides students with the opportunity to develop fundamental knowledge and skills in the practice of family therapy. The program is practice-oriented and skill based with an emphasis on developing partici-pant’s skills and knowledge in the practice of working with the families. It will also focus on increasing student’s in-sight into themselves as practitioners, and as individuals. It aims to build competence, confidence, effectiveness and comfort when working with families.

Students will have the opportunity to learn through interactive lectures, observation of video recordings of Master Family Therapist, structured skill-based activities, provision of relevant literature, case studies, experiential learning and group supervision.

Although each module will provide distinct learning the overall aim is to incrementally build student’s knowledge, skills and competence as they can begin to develop into family therapy practitioner.

David will share his extensive knowledge, experience and reflections gathered through his work with families, and an attempt to demystify the sometimes complex area of working with families.

Students will be limited to maximise learning opportunity.

Testimonial

“I heartily recommend this Certificate in Family Therapy course to therapists eager to develop new skills. The training was a good balance of theory and practice as the trainers themselves are practising family therapists. Trainees gained a clear overview of the different models of family therapy and the trainers made frequent reference to important pa-pers and key textbooks by various masters in the field of family therapy. Watching videos of therapy sessions depicting various approaches to family therapy was extremely enlightening on the art and craft of family therapy. Face to face consultation and live supervision over Skype on cases seen by trainees enriched the learning process. Written assignments helped to consolidate learning. I learnt much from David who shared his extensive experience in working with families and who demonstrated their family therapy skills during group work, consultation and supervision”.
