Chinese culture class gives Central students peek into another way of life

Math class makes an impression on students

By Brooklyn Barnes and Charone Starks

A University of Alabama college student from China came to Central to help people in after school learn about Chinese Culture. For us making a Chinese culture name we did a meaning of ourselves and she made that into a Chinese name. We made a Chinese kite out of paper. It was a square and then we out-lined it with string. We got to choose our own colors and mine was

purple with hearts. We also learned about Chinese food and how it is different from ours. They use beef in liquid for beef stew. And we use beef for sandwiches and hamburgers. We use potatoes for French fries and they use it in stew. In America we eat by ourselves and they eat together. They also fight over who pays the bill and in America we don’t want to. For fish they use it differ-ently by boiling their fish and we fry it.

What we are larning in math is vaulting expressions. Like if you have A the teacher will tell you what the a stands for. The A stands for 3. But if the 2 and the A are to-gether you multiply it, like 2A. That would be 2 times 3 because the A stands for 3, so you multiply that and get the answer. So I did 2A-5A=9. But you have to follow the order of operation in order to getthe answer. Always fol-low PEMDAS. It stands for paren-theses, then exponents, multiply, divide, add, subtract. Those are the

steps to the order of operation to help you get the right answer to themath subject vaulting expres-sions. It is not hard to do the vault-ing expressions if you follow the order of operation. so that is what we are learning in 5th grade math in Mrs. Tinker’s class.

This week we were doing math for a week and when we went back to our homeroom. It was a lot of work. We had to catch up with reading and math. It turned out to not really a lot of work and we leaned new things. In math we do a lot of activities to help us get a good understand-ing of it and learn how to do it and get it right. I like this school because we learn.

Mr. Mitchell Bruce came to our school and he said that he invented the window on the airplane. When he told us he said it wasn’t very hard. You have to think of it first. When he built it, he had to use team work. Instead of getting the money he gave it to a company that

helps children. They gave him a free salad. He said it wasn’t about the money. It was about salad. He works at B.F. Goodrich and he used something called cyberglass to build something to hold heavy objects. When he showed us the video about every-thing that has cyberglass in it, he made us try to build something out of cyberglass.

“My new years resolution is to go to Ohio and to sing and to get good grades and to get a dog and to get a job for little kids by helping homeless people. Love to all in 2014.”

– Shanija Brown

“I want to meet my favorite rapper

2Chainz. He made a lot of songs.” – Dane Davis

“This year I want to be a better person and study things about life and get my education so I could be a teacher and teach kids and be a good friend to people when they need help with something so I would be there.”

– Hikira Cane

“I want to see the president. To eat chicken every month and get new video games and see my dad across the street and go see my Aunts and go to Disneyworld with my brother and see my sister and see the statue of Liberty.”

– Kris Tooson

“My new years resolution is to start to be great in 2014. I will make bet-ter decisions. I want to start to be a better person.”

Judge Glenda Hatchett is very serious with her work. She doesn’t play. When kids act disobedient in school she either sends them off or

she gives them one more chance. She seems like a very nice lady and when people see her they try to do better. When she says “You’re gone,” you’re gone. When people see her they get scared, and she was very scary but nice. She was a very beau-tiful young woman. She has short hair and a black robe. When we saw her on the Internet my mom said to me, “Do you want to go there or do you not?” I said, “I will do good in school.” I went to impact, a pro-gram to promote positive behavior, I learned a very valuable lesson and from now on I still do good in school matter what.

We are learning about fact and opinion in school at Central El-ementary School in 5th grade. It’s actually very simple. A fact is when you can prove it. An opinion is when you can’t prove it.

Like for example: Georgia O’Keeffe is an artist and that is a fact. Some people said that her art is beautiful, but that is an opinion. An exmaple of a fact is: Shapes have all different sides. An exmaple of a an opinion is: Shapes are my favorite thing to learn.

What if people don’t like shapes? Then that is an opinion. When and if you want to learn about fact and opinion, just read more about it in school. This is a lesson from Central Elementary School in Mrs. Peoples 5th grade class in room 29.
