sure to educate as well as captivate the campus audience. This
year LU will highlight their popular event – La Tomatina –
with hopes to make it their largest event to date. LU’s mission

La Tomatina!
La Tomatina is a Spain-inspired event that was brought to the Fredonia campus by the student
organization Latinos Unidos. The event originally takes place in Valencia, Spain where it has been
tradition since 1945. It all started when a couple of teens weren't allowed to participate in the gigantes
y cabezudos parade. In a state of anger, the young people started throwing tomatoes from a nearby
vegetable stand at one another. The teens came back the next year bearing their own tomatoes and
did so every year until the town allowed it to take place in 1950. Latinos Unidos thought it would be a
great idea to bring this tradition to Fredonia. La Tomatina is an annual tomato fight that occurs every
fall semester as part of Latino History month.
All proceeds from La Tomatina goes to the Make A Wish Foundation. This particular part of
SUNY Fredonia's La Tomatina history began a few years ago, when one of the CMA members
younger sister was diagnosed with a medical condition. That was the first year the event made the
donation and did it in honor of Cookie, the young girl that was assisted by the Make A Wish foundation.
Every year during their history month they hold this tomato fight along with other things such
as caricature artist, henna tattoos, and in previous years, a dunk tank. Latinos Unidos hopes to spread
the history of this event and the culture of Valencia, Spain with students of all backgrounds as well as
the community. There are a variety of activities available for those that don't want to get down and dirty in
the traditional tomato fights. It is a family friendly event – any and all can come and enjoy!
