HeartKids Australia is offering ‘sweethearts’ around the nation a new way to show their love this Valentine’s Day, while also raising much-needed funds to fi ght childhood heart disease - the biggest cause of death of children under the age of one.

HeartKids Australia’s Sweetheart Day on Saturday, February 14 allows anyone to demonstrate their love for a partner, friend or family member – no matter where they are in the world – by sending them a virtual gift donation via www.sweetheartday.org.au. The funds contribute to the national charity’s support, research, advocacy and awareness work.

Childhood heart disease is not a single condition; it includes a wide range of heart defects which a child is born with or develops in childhood as a result of other illnesses. Some cases require major heart surgery within days of a child’s birth, while others remain undiagnosed until adolescence or adulthood. Eight babies a day are born with a heart defect in Australia.

“Sweetheart Day is the charitable way to turn some of the money we would normally spend on Valentine’s Day presents into tangible benefi ts for kids in need, such as funding for life-saving research or family support during surgeries and treatments. The purchase of a virtual gift sends a message of love to those you care for, as well as the thousands of heartkids’ families around Australia,” said Jann Kingston, CEO of HeartKids Australia.

“For the families of babies born with heart defects, the emotional and fi nancial stress is profound. While the scope of childhood heart disease is broad, some children born with heart defects will undergo open heart surgery in the fi rst few days of their life,” added Kingston.

“However, surgery is not a cure. Children with CHD will face unique challenges for their entire lives. This may include ongoing medical treatment and repeated heart surgeries. The disease is for life, once a heartkid always a heartkid.”

HeartKids helps families through every step of their journey. Sweetheart Day aims to raise the funds needed to provide this support, as well as help fund research into the causes, treatment and management of heart defects and broaden awareness of Childhood Heart Disease in Australia.

Be a sweetheart this Valentine’s Day

since 1983

Somewhere in the week between Christmas and New Years, my washing machine broke. And when I say broke, I mean it would fi ll the tub full of water and then refuse to wash, leaving me with a load of sopping wet clothes and limited means to rectify the situation. To say I was annoyed and frustrated would be an understatement. After having guests and a full house over Christmas, I subsequently faced piles of dirty sheets, tablecloths, towels and clothes laying about my laundry.

Even though I took a few loads of essentials to a friend’s house and used her machine while I waited the week and a half it took for the part to come in and the repairman to come back and fi x it, there was a backlog of washing to be done. One of my husband’s well used phrases is ‘playing catch up’. It has a myriad of applications and certainly applies here!

I hate ‘playing catch up’ of any sort. Whether it’s coming back to an overfl owing inbox after a holiday, washing when it’s been raining (or a broken machine!), weeding the garden or the piles of washing up and dishwasher duties after a weekend of entertaining.

Another circumstance in which we say ‘catch up’ is with regard to friends. And I have to be honest, this is something I would actually rather not do.

Let me explain. The fact that I need to ‘catch up’ on my friends lives, says to me that I haven’t seen them enough to keep up to date on what’s happening with them. If my life is too busy to hear about the everyday things that happen in the lives of those I love, then maybe I need to refocus my life and where my time is spent.

Of course, it’s wonderful, and necessary, to spend longer chunks of time with people to really hear where they’re at and how they are travelling, but when we’ve left it so long that there are the metaphorical piles of washing strewn about, it should be a warning to us that we aren’t investing enough in those around us.

And in our marriages, where jobs, kids, other family, friends and commitments, all take up our time, we can fi nd ourselves never delving deeper than the logistics of life i.e. what’s for dinner, who’s taking who to dance, sport or music lessons. Before we know it, we need to ‘catch up’ on our spouse.

It’s easy to let things pile up and get behind in our relationships and often, our only fault is a lack of intentional connection. It takes time to ask the deeper questions, just as it takes time to put a load of washing on, hang it out, fold it and put it away. But just as it takes a lot more time to catch up on washing after the machine breaks down, it takes a lot more time to repair a relationship after an extended time of only relating on a surface level.

Why not resolve this year to be more intentional with your relationships? Putting a load on every day is more benefi cial to everyone than having to do load upon load trying to catch up.

Kindy to Year 6 07 3372 0888Years 7 to 12 07 3372 [email protected]

Hello ReadersAt this time of the year we celebrate the success of our graduates of 2014 and acknowledge their success in achieving the tertiary study course of their first choice. 103 students graduated from St John’s in 2014 with most taking up places at universities to study an array on disciplines such as Engineering, Law, Business and Health Sciences. We know they have been well prepared for this stage of their learning lives and we wish them every success.

As a learning community, St John’s teachers focus on using “next” practice to provide opportunities for students at all year levels to achieve the best educational outcomes. As an independent school St John’s has the capacity to take a balanced view about what’s important for our young people to know and be able to do in the future and to encourage them in their learning and development in both academic and extracurricular pursuits.

As “custodians of opportunity” our teachers challenge young minds to develop confidence in using their natural creativity and being innovative in their thinking. As we prepare young people for their future in the rapidly changing digital world, we are aware that they will need to reinvent themselves over and over as they move through careers and into new ones. Confidence and personal resilience will be essential attributes of the St John’s graduate.

Students at St John’s are developing inquiring minds through our recent successful application to be a candidate school within the world-renowned International Baccalaureate program. In addition to our strong focus on literacy and numeracy, this year students are using their natural inquisitiveness to think for themselves and solve problems in creative ways.

Complementing our focus on teaching inquiry methods to children of all year levels is our commitment to providing many and varied opportunities through our extracurricular programs in sport, performing arts and service programs.

A balanced educational program is the key to success for your child so please take the opportunity to visit us on our first Open Day for 2015 or alternatively contact our Registrar to arrange a personal tour email: [email protected]

Sign up for some good clean fun with West Centenary Scout Group

A sign on day is being held at West Centenary Scout Group on the 7th of February, 2015. In much the same way as sporting clubs hold a sign on day at the beginning of each season, new Scouts across the state will ‘sign up’ on Saturday 7 February.

West Centenary Group Leader, Phillip Lincoln said, “The event is a great opportunity for children and parents to come and fi nd out if Scouting suits them. There will be opportunities to experience Scouting activities and talk to Leaders and members about their Scouting experiences.”

Scouts is a worldwide organisation for youth aged from six to 26 years. It teaches social and leadership skills through challenge and outdoor adventure. The program follows the school calendar year with activities held on weekends and during school holidays.

Scouts Queensland Chief Commissioner, Kirsty Brown OAM, reported that there are over 15 000 adult and youth member Scouts in Queensland. “Scouting traditions have been in Australia for over 100 years and we have developed a strong, fun program based on the needs of today’s youth,” she said.

Come down to West Centenary Scout Group, at the Jindalee Scout Den, Mount Ommaney Drive, Jindalee on Saturday 7 February from 10am to 2pm to fi nd out more or sign up. For more information call Scouts Queensland on 1800SCOUTS or email [email protected].

How to Train Your Dragon 2 will be shown by the Jindalee State School P&C as the movie under the stars on Saturday night 7 February.

If you or someone you know is new to Australia and would like to learn more conversational English, Westside Church of Christ runs Guided English Conversations sessions during February and March.

Guided English Conversations has been designed to assist people with their spoken English. The emphasis is on conversation which occurs in small groups of three to fi ve people and is guided by a topic, for example, Public Holidays in Australia. Each topic has a series of related pictures and questions for discussions. There are six topics in each series, which all relate to an aspect of Australian life. Each topic includes a section where the Christian perspective is shared and discussed. At the end of the series participants enjoy a Celebration BBQ and Certifi cate Presentation.

The sessions will begin on Tuesday 10 February with the last being on Tuesday 17 March. Two sessions are provided each week, Tuesday mornings at 9.30am and Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm and are held in a house on the grounds of Westside Church of Christ. There is also a time for refreshments where participants can mix and mingle and begin to establish friendships; participants are asked to contribute $2 per session is to cover tea, coffee and biscuits. In the past, participants have been from South Korea, China, Columbia, Iran, Vietnam, India and Japan.

Interested people need to enrol prior to attending by calling 3279 1570.

Motorists who use Sumners Road in the Centenary suburbs will be able to spend more time with their families and less time stuck in traffi c thanks to the Newman LNP Government’s promise to upgrade the overpass.

Member for Mount Ommaney Tarnya Smith said if re-elected, the project will be delivered as part of the Strong Choices plan for her electorate.

“As part of my strong plan for Mount Ommaney I promise to deliver this $80 million upgrade to fix this troublesome spot, easing congestion and delivering local jobs for the economy,” Ms Smith said.

“This project is one of my main priorities and if elected, this job-creating infrastructure upgrade will be delivered through our Strong Choices plan over the next term of an LNP government.

“The Sumner Road Overpass will improve the cross motorway capacity for up to 30,000 vehicles a day travelling between Sumner Park, Darra and Seventeen Mile Rocks.

“It will also allow motorists to avoid taking short local trips on the motorway and improving rail access for passengers.”Premier Campbell Newman said the government will free up the road bottleneck at Sumners Road interchange at

Mount Ommaney as part of the LNP’s Strong Choices program. “This project is part of our Less time on roads, more time with family plan, alleviating congestion for families,

improving safety and providing more jobs for the local economy,” Mr Newman said.“The Sumners Road upgrade is one of the fi rst projects to be announced under our Strong Choices program, which

will pay down Labor’s $80 billion debt and deliver vital congestion-busting infrastructure.“We are delivering projects in a responsible way, targeting congestion hot spots on state roads.”Mr Newman said a further $360 million for other congestion-busting projects under the LNP’s Less time on roads,

more time with family plan would be announced across south east Queensland in the coming weeks.

Making Mount Ommaney even strongerAround two years ago, I was elected to help get Queensland back on track and make our local area an even better

place to live, work, raise a family and run a business. When we were elected in 2012, Queensland’s hospitals were in crisis, our schools were under resourced, crime rates

were increasing and our economy was burdened with debt and defi cits that were unsustainable. Since then, because of your hard work and our strong economic management we are starting to see real results

locally, I’m pleased to say that we’re delivering on our strong plan. We’re delivering the schools and education our kids deserve by investing:

• $2.5m locally to fi x maintenance backlog issues;• $1.6m locally to improve numeracy and literacy; and • Delivering the much-needed building upgrades for our high schools.

We’re delivering the hospitals and health services we need by:• Reopening public palliative care beds at Canossa that Labor closed in March 2012;• Establishing a new state of the art Palliative Care Hub at Corinda; and• Investing more in doctors and nurses to see outstanding results in reduced dental and surgery wait times.

We’re delivering safer streets and secure communities by delivering: • Over 800 frontline police offi cers across Queensland; • Tougher laws to combat criminal gangs; and• More resources for our local police to see a reduction in crime locally, including a 7% reduction in unlawful entry

and 11% decrease in offences against property.Local residents tell me that they are seeing results, however there is always more to be done, and that’s why I’ll

keep delivering our strong plan for a brighter future – locally and for Queensland.

Music at the Hub is a quality, casual, relaxed ‘night out’ to enjoy talented musicians and performers from Brisbane and any touring acts that can be enticed to come to the Centenary suburbs. The genre includes styles of Folk, Blues, Jazz, easy listening and soft Rock depending on the artists.

This month on Saturday 21 February, the performers will be Tim Gaze and Blue Café. Residents are encouraged to book early as this is sure to be another terrifi c evening.

Tim Gaze has enjoyed a long career as one of Australia’s pre-eminent guitar player/vocalists.

Through the years Tim has been an infl uential member of several highly regarded Australian bands – Tamam Shud, Kahvas Jute, Ariel, Rose Tattoo, The Aussie Rebels and The Hoochie Coochie Men – as well as several bands featuring his own name.

Today Tim is a quiet, unassuming man who downplays his talent but is also quick to point out that his career is “still a work in progress” with traditional and modern blues, rock, roots, surf, acoustic electric slide guitar, vocals all featuring.

Blue Café is a means for the “not so young” to continue their love of music. The band focuses mainly on swing, jazz, Latin and a little blues.

The band consists of Julie Lee Rae as vocalist (apart from Blue Café, Julie, a talented performer, also has her own “one person” show based around Country Rock); Neville Monks on bass (Neville has played for many jazz line-ups over the years and continues to have a high level of enthusiasm and skill); Robert Walsh, drums (Robert has had a part-time career as a drummer in Rock’n’Roll - he wanted to turn his hand to more diverse styles and has done that very well); Harry Strybos, guitar (Harry has played in quite a number of rock bands over the years and is basically a rhythm player gone wrong).

Music at the Hub takes place at Centenary Community Hub, 171 Dandenong Rd Mt Ommaney, and doors open at 6.00pm with ample parking on site, before performances begin at 7pm.

The cost is $10 entry per person (under 14 years old free entry) and is cash only, cost includes entry to lucky door prize. Light meals, nibble platters, snacks, soft drinks, water, tea and coffee will be available at very reasonable prices.

BYO alcoholic drinks only, don’t forget your glasses; audience members are asked to not bring snacks or food, as the sale of food and soft drinks helps to keep the entry price low.

Bookings are essential and can be made by sending an email to [email protected] or by phoning 0499 999 772 to secure your table, if unanswered please leave a message.

Enjoy a relaxed night out with Music at the Hub

SICK & INJURED ANIMALS 1300 ANIMAL

We often bang on about the need to socialise puppies with other dogs and people from an early age, yet generally kittens are just left to get on with it.

Kittens are not taught rules and boundaries by their mothers but by their siblings. Kittens develop socially between two to seven weeks old and develop predatory behaviour at 10 weeks and going on to social litter fi ghting around 14 weeks.

It is great fun to watch kittens play but if going to a new home at eight weeks, the owner will be the provider of both motherhood and playmate status in the house if there are no other cats. If visitors are also rare, the cat may become a little agoraphobic or overly attached to one person and not respond well to any changes in the environment.

Also, from the cats perspective, things can seem like a virtual cultural desert. What kittens learn to play with now, they will go on to hunt in the future. Wiggling and waving your fi nger shaped chunks of meat in front of the newly aspiring hunter is a recipe for pain. Invest in some cheap cat toys - stuffed mice on elastic strings, feathered ping pong balls or even toilet paper in a cardboard boxes.

Anther good solution is to strongly consider getting two kittens from the outset. Traditionally we have treated cats as solo animals because when introducing new older cats to a house or neighbourhood territorial aggression may occur. On the other hand whole colonies of cats exist in shared spaces with a time and place for everyone and everyone in their place and time. Most cats will accept a new kitten if they are less than two years old (from either sex) though starting out together as kittens is a more foolproof method.

Cats and kittens will also need their own spaces for some rest time usually either a high safe resting shelf or under the bed. Many cats naturally lose their love of the lap as they grow and seem content to just hang around in the vicinity.

For those cranky old cats already set in their ways, another cats may well be just too stressful or worse, trigger urine spraying. Nevertheless providing some senior playtime in the form of interactive toys or household insects allows a safe release of hunting/predatory/play aggression so you can spend more purring time after. Again a high shelf or cat furniture for rest time in the space you share is also highly recommended.

To see these in action watch some of Jackson Galaxy’s ‘My Cat from Hell’ cat whispering series techniques and his tips on You Tube. We can also provide spray pheromones which help the cat chill in its own space. A quality, non cereal, that is, meat based protein and low glycemic diet will reduce any sugar spikes which may also contribute to destructive behaviours.

If you still struggling with a cranky cat or just need advice on rearing kittens, then we are here to help.

Here are a few important events to mark in your calendar for 2015.National Ride2School Day will be held on Friday, 13 March, celebrating an

active journey to school as well as empowering children to stay fit and healthy. Active travel is a great way for students of all ages to meet their recommended daily dose of 60 minutes physical activity every day. The purpose of National Ride2School Day is to show school communities that riding to school is an easy and fun activity.

If you would like to get your school involved and register for the event, visit: www.bicyclenetwork.com.au/general/programs/2242/

Harmony Day is an annual event held on March 21 and celebrates our cultural diversity. It is an opportunity to wear orange clothing or an orange ribbon to acknowledge the cultural diversity within the community. To register an event or for Harmony Day material, visit: www.harmony.gov.au

National Youth Week is the largest annual celebration of young people aged 12-25. It provides young people with the opportunity to express their ideas and views, act on issues that affect their lives and have a lot of fun. This year Youth Week will be celebrated in the week of the 10th of April. For more information, visit: www.youthweek.com

This year we will commemorate the ANZAC Centenary, marking 100 years since our nation’s involvement in the First World War. The First World War helped define our country and the Centenary commemorations will recognise the original ANZAC’s who served at Gallipoli and the Western Front as well as the service of all Australian servicemen and women. There will be a number of services taking place on the 25th of April around the Western Corridor. Service times and details will be available in the coming weeks. For more information about ANZAC Centenary, visit www.anzaccentenary.gov.au/index.htm.

Welcome back to Centenary National Seniors 2015! If your New Year’s Resolution is to be more socially active, we invite you to join our Club

where you can be involved with your community and meet over 100 members who attend each month. Our fi rst meeting for 2015 is at the Jindalee Bowls Club on Tuesday 3rd February starting at 9.30am, where you will be met at the door by our Sunshine ladies, handed a copy of our monthly Newsletter with all our upcoming activities, join with everyone else in having some morning tea, settle down to listen whilst we have a short meeting, and then be entertained by Lachlan Wallace.

Other activities that will be back in action during February are our Steady Steps exercise program every Monday morning at Centenary Uniting Church Hall. Be there at 9am for a 9.15am start.

We will have our fi rst Explorer Trip for 2015 where we travel to a destination by bus, train or City Cat. These trips are fun and teach our members to use public transport instead of our cars.

Our MahJong group didn’t break over Christmas and is still growing in the number of players. You don’t have to know how to play this game before you join, we teach you, and show you how to enjoy the game as much as we do. It also strengthens the old grey matter. MahJong is held the fi rst two Thursdays each month at Mt Ommaney Library, 9am – noon. Then we have an Evening Dinner once each month where some of us get together at a hotel or restaurant for a chat whilst we’re eating. That’s usually on the second Wednesday each month.

We also have a general ‘Coffee and Chat’ session at the Mt Ommaney Food court (beside Betty Beans) at 10am on the last Tuesday morning each month. This is a great chance to meet and chat with other members and make new friends. We also have live theatre sessions on Saturdays or Sundays that you could be interested in.

As you can see, we offer a great social activities program for older people, and are constantly including more and varied things to do with our free time. If you feel lonely or just want to extend your social activities, this is the group to be involved with. Just turn up and we will meet you at the door.

For more details, please call me on 3279 1444.
