July 25, 2018 Vision… who needs vision? As some of you may know, I’ve been having some issues with my eyes. I don’t think it’s serious, but ever since cataract surgery last November, I’ve had some problems seeing clearly. I don’t notice it all the time, but there are some instances where it becomes more obvious. I’m fine with driving, though the street signs are a challenge. I can use my computer well enough, but my eyes quickly grow tired from that activity. Watching TV is okay; sort of (Patti, can you see what inning they’re in? And what’s that pitch count?) And if I use a large enough font, I can even read my sermons from the pulpit. Where I notice it the most, however, is during worship, when I’m trying to lead the liturgy. When I use the stand on the altar to hold my worship loose leaf folder, it’s sometimes problematic. I’ll soon be seeing a retina specialist, and I hope he’ll have some suggestions that will help. It’s tough when something you take for granted, like your eyesight, doesn’t seem to work so well anymore. As Bette Davis once said, “Aging isn’t for sissies!” This all reminds me about our collective vision at Centennial. We’ve had a Vision team in place for a while now, and for the most part, we’ve been working behind the scenes. We’ve done some research, using a resource guidebook by Dave Daubert, ‘Living Lutheran -- Renewing Your Congregation.” We surveyed people at our last Annual Meeting in January, asking a series of questions to assess what we look like at Centennial. From these results, we’ve given some thought to our vision for the future, and what it might take collectively to get to that future place. As Pastor Daubert suggested in his book, we’ve broken down our Vision Statement into three components: Purpose, Guiding Principles and Strategic Initiatives for the next five years. Checking in with Council and other small groups, we made some minor adjustments to the language of the Purpose and Guiding Principles. Now we’re ready for discussion, and some discernment regarding our strategic initiatives. If we can’t have conversation with the majority of our members that is open and honest, our Vision Statement becomes simply some nice words on a paper – sounds good, but so what? With this in mind, we’ve set up 2 small group sessions after worship. The first of these sessions was held on July 15th. We had a good turnout as 18 people attended. There was open and honest conversation, and we gained some insights that we believe will help. Our second session will take place after worship on August 12. If you were not at the first meeting, please mark your calendars. All opinions are important. After our discussions and possible revisions, we’ll hold a special Congregation Meeting after worship on October 21st. At that time, we’ll have final discussion and we’ll vote on the adoption of this important document. On behalf of our Vision Team and Congregation Council, I urge each of you to be involved in this process.

In Christ,

Pastor Jerry

Sink or Swim? People’s stories about learning to swim often sound like this: “My dad tossed me into the water. I didn’t have a choice — I flailed around until I found myself swimming!” But an elderly Christian tells a variation of this story: “Wanting to teach me to swim, my father threw me off the dock into the lake. I sank.” But then he goes on: “So my father jumped in with me.” The storyteller’s wisdom shines in his application: “God doesn’t toss us into life and leave us alone to sink or swim. By sending Jesus, God jumped right in with us to save us from death, hold us protectively and help us navigate life.”
