On July 7th, 2017, Centennial held a funeral service for our beloved

sister in Christ, Jackie Skillman. The service was beautiful, a celebration of Jackie’s life. At a luncheon following Jackie’s burial, her son-in-law George shared the following with me. These are excerpts from a paper written by J.C. Ryle, the First Anglican Bishop of Liverpool. They were written in the 19th Century. I was moved by the language, and I’m now sharing these excerpts with all of you as a remembrance of Jackie. …Pastor Jerry

In Our Dying Hour

The day may come when after a long fight with disease, when medicine can do no more, and that nothing remains but to die. Family and friends will be standing by, unable to help. Hearing, eyesight, even the power of praying, will be rapidly failing us. The world and its shadows will be melting beneath our feet. Eternity, with its realities, will be looming large before our minds. What shall support us in that trying hour? What shall enable us to feel, ‘I fear no evil’? (Psalm 23:4.) Nothing, nothing can do it but close communion with Christ. Christ dwelling in our hearts by faith,—Christ putting His right arm under our heads,—Christ felt to be sitting by our side,—Christ alone can give us the complete victory in the last struggle. So let us hold on to Christ more closely, love Him more heartily, live to Him more thoroughly, copy Him more exactly, confess Him more boldly, follow Him more fully. Faith like this will always bring its own reward. Worldly people may laugh at it. Weak cultural Christianity may think it to be extreme; but it will wear well. In dark times it will bring us light. In sickness it will bring us peace. In the world to come it will give us a crown of glory that will not fade away. Time is becoming short. The ways of this world are passing away. A few more sicknesses, and all will be over. A few more funerals, and our own funeral will take place. A few more storms and tossings, and we shall be safe in harbor. We travel towards a world where there is no more sickness,—where parting, and pain, and crying, and mourning, are done with forever. In the meantime let us live lives of faith in the Son of God. Let us lean all our weight on Christ, and rejoice in the thought that He lives eternally. Thanks be to God! Christ lives, though we may die, He lives who conquered death! He lives and will one day change our weak and worn bodies, making them like His glorious body. In sickness and in health, in life and in death, let us lean confidently on Him. Surely we ought to say daily, “Thank you God for your Son, Jesus Christ!” .

Recommendation to council: The funds listed as Building Contingency will be used to pay for unbudgeted capital improvements and other unbudgeted property expenses such as new appliances, windows, roof re-pairs, tree removal, etc. The congregation should be made aware that the fund exists, what it is for, and that any funds listed on the building line of envelopes will be used to replenish the fund until it is again at $30,000. Members of the congregation are asked to let these team members know what they think the

objectives should be. The Phoenixville Regional Planning Committee (PRPC) organized a workshop held on June

22nd at the Kimberton Fire Company. This committee is concerned with history, environment, development, transportation, housing, recreation, and culture of East Pikeland and surrounding townships. Maybe we could get some helpful information from them.

How to incorporate new members into our ministry:

We could do a “Ministry Minute” several Sundays to highlight the different ministries.

We could make an informative poster for each ministry and have them available for Rally Day with sign-up sheets.

Meeting adjourned with the Lord’s Prayer at 8:30pm. Respectfully submitted, Karen Winning, Council Member

August 2017 The Cent-I-Gram 7

The goal of stewardship ministry at Centennial is to help God’s people grow in their relationship with Jesus through the use of the time, talents

and finances that God has entrusted to us.

Proportional Giving Nowhere does the Bible say, “Give $50.00!” or “Give 50 dinari!” Instead, the language of scripture always speaks to us about proportional giving. Therefore those who have more wealth or who earn more income are

encouraged to give more. This is based on a percentage of their wealth/income. And for those who don’t have a lot, or are living only on Social Security, there is comfort in proportional giving.

I remember when I first started attending a Lutheran church and there was a discussion about

financial giving. I was just getting started in my career and I had never been given any guidelines, so I thought, “When I’m successful, I’ll be able to give something to the church; but for now, a few bucks a week will have to suffice.” In a way, I was right! But my thinking was based on rationalizing my meager giving habits. Had I thought it through, I would have looked at what Patti and I were earning, and applied a percentage to determine the amount we might give. I also would have discussed the importance of our giving with Patti to make sure that we were in agreement about this vital aspect of our faith journey.

As you may know, the biblical standard is a ‘tithe’ or 10% of income. If you’re giving 10% or more

of your income, congratulations! Don’t stop now! But if you are not at that level (and statistics show that very few Christians are), here’s an idea. Take a look at where you are now. What percentage of your in-come do you share? For example, if you are earning $50,000/ yr, and you give an average of $20/week, you are giving $1,000/yr or 2% of your income. Thank you! Now rather than feeling guilty or trying to jump to a tithe overnight, what might it be like to increase your giving by 1% of your annual income? In this example, it would mean giving an added $10/week. Does that sound realistic? If you try this and it works for you, then you might consider an additional 1% increase in six months or a year.

Now here’s the good news! This has absolutely nothing to do with Centennial’s need to receive

money. The focus of sound biblical stewardship habits like proportional giving lies squarely on our need as disciples to give; give so that we may grow in our relationship with Jesus Christ. Surely, churches like Centennial depend upon our financial support in order to continue their life-changing ministries, but one of the most important ministries of the church is helping its people to deepen their faith by the use of the time, talent and financial resources with which they have been blessed. Look for more characteristics of Christian stewardship in the months to come.

In Christ,

Pastor Tancredi

We would like to thank Thrivent Financial for Lutherans' (SM) and those people who have designated Choice Dollars via the Thrivent Choice(R) program. This month we gratefully acknowledge gifts designated by the following: Jerene Gladfelter If you have any questions about Choice Dollars or how to designate them to our church, please contact [email protected].

Thinking about Christmas Already?

The months are flying by and we are already thinking about our 23rd Annual Christmas Crafts Festival on Saturday, November 11 from 9 AM until 2 PM. Grandma needs a new supply of items in good, “sell-able” condition for her attic so if you do any sorting or cleaning out at your house, remember Grandma and put aside things that we can sell in November. Popular items are jewelry, toys, dolls, dishes, kitchen items, knick-knacks, videos, DVDs, jigsaw puzzles, books, games, lamps and all kinds of collectibles in good condition and mostly small enough to fit on a table. We have sold curtains, tablecloths and sheets in excellent condition. No electronics, please. There are also registration forms in the church office if you are interested in renting a table. Email [email protected] or call the church office at 610-933-1528.

A Note of Thanks

Thank You all for the most uplifting,

comforting, and appreciated prayers, cards,

and letters I received during my recent

surgery and subsequent recovery.

Save the date for our fall Red Cross Blood

Drive to be held on Monday, September 18

from 2:00 PM until 7:00 PM.

See Chuck Cantwell with any questions.

At their June meeting, the Council clarified how I should handle moneys designated to "buildings" on your envelopes. Years ago a "building fund" was established. Council

has set that fund balance at $30,000. This fund is used for “Building Maintenance Contingencies” and is basically an emergency need account, to cover unanticipated building needs. It has been used to replace appliances, make repairs to the parsonage heating system and will likely be needed this year for major repair needs. Any funds designated on the Building Fund line will be used to replenish this fund to its $30,000 balance. Any funds in excess of the annual need will be added to general funds. The balance in the fund as of 6/30/2017 is $25,765.93 (funds having been used for parsonage flue repairs and relining of the furnace).

In 2 Kings 7, a great siege is lifted when God causes the Arameans, Israel’s enemies, to flee. Initially, some lepers at the city gate keep the victory quiet, hiding the spoils of war. Then they realize, “What we’re doing is not right. This is a day of good news and we are keeping it to ourselves” (verse 9, NIV). How often we keep the good news of God’s grace and salvation to ourselves! Yet it’s intended for everyone, and there’s plenty to go around. In fact, it never ends. Who in your life needs to hear that news today?
