Origins of the Consortium

• There exist significant ‘barriers to progress’ that inhibit progress in migration (and other) research

• These barriers are beyond the intellectual and financial resources of individual investigators

• The NIGMS “Glue Grant” initiative provided a mechanism to address these barriers

-require collaborative, interdisciplinary approaches-not readily supported by the R01 mechanism

Glue grant - objectives

Non R01 type research

Multi-institutional collaborations

Complex processes

- Not hypothesis driven, few experiments

- reagents, technology, information, & measurements

Page 6: The Cell Migration Consortium 5 min; 8hr PD 8 .

Glue grant - expectations

•Robust data sharing

•Significant bioinformatics via website- Organize information in the field

- Protocols, data, papers, links, & information

•Clear objectives and milestones

Consortium Objectives

• Create a “virtual institute” - multi-institutional, interdisciplinary research initiatives and facilities

• Develop innovative, cutting edge technologies and reagents and produce important new data

• Develop web-based communications for collaborative interactions information sharing

• Promote interdisciplinary research

• Promote synergy among initiatives and facilities

Page 8: The Cell Migration Consortium 5 min; 8hr PD 8 .

Consortium Research Goals

• A census of the migration proteome

• The structure of the large multi-molecular complexes that drive migration

• Probes and technology to locate, quantify, & perturb signals that are regulated spatially and temporally

• Mathematical models of migration

• Conditional knockout and knockin mice and cell lines for key migration related genes

• Imaging technology for studying migration in vivo

Page 9: The Cell Migration Consortium 5 min; 8hr PD 8 .

Bioinformatics goals

• Organize information & data

- Simple, useful, & databases

- Migration knowledge database

Annotation environment

Evidence codes – gene ontology

Readily queried
