Sympathy

The Chapel family extends its sympathy to Shelby Collins for the loss of her husband, Bill Collins, who passed away July 5th at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital.

Probably no two words in any language are used interchangeably more than “want” and “need.” Yes, they do share some characteristics in that they both express some degree of desire. Often we treat these words as having a single identity, the same meaning, and the differences between the two words ap-pear to become lost. By treating these two words, these two concepts, as though they shared a common meaning, that is, conflating “want” and “need,” we end up with very different misunderstandings of either word.

Let me give you some examples. Sylvia walks into Coldwater Creek, a now non-existent clothing store for women, sees a white blouse, and says, “Oh, I need that blouse for 2nd and 4th Choir Sundays." Yet, I take a look at her side of the closet, and I realize that 'need' and 'want' have been used interchangea-bly, because she already has a dozen white blouses hanging there. Or maybe I'm just confused.

Let me be fair. I almost never pass up the chance to buy a pair of khaki cargo shorts. I need every pair that I see. Granted, I do need them in varying, in-creasing sizes; but hanging in my closet, there they are--all shapes, all sizes, equipped with varying configurations of pockets. I have conflated “want” and “need.”

Perhaps we do that as Christians in our needing and wanting Jesus. However, in this context, I believe we 'need' more than we 'want,' a reversing of our nor-mal wanting/needing patterns. You see, I am not sure we want Jesus with us at all times, in all places, in all things. Oh, sure, we sing the spiritual, " I want Jesus to walk with me. All along my pilgrim journey, Lord, I want Jesus to walk with me." But, I am not sure we sing those lines with greatest sincer-ity. But, when we sing "in my trials...when my heart is almost breaking...when I'm troubled...when my head is bowed in sorrow...I want Jesus to walk with me," yes, I believe we mean that.

So, is it when we are needy that the want Jesus by our side? If we aren't hun-gry, poor, sick, lonely--you get this--when we feel satiated, do we really want Jesus walking with us?

Today we will explore our 'need for' and our 'want for' Jesus to travel our pil-grim journey with us. Why travel with us? Because as Christians we are to know and practice perfect love throughout our pilgrimage. And it is through Jesus, God's Son, that God's love is made visible to us. And our love must become visible in all our living, emulating the love of Jesus.

In trust,

Lamar
