The Cause and Treatment of Tooth Decay By Dr. Brian Ferber, of the Ferber Dental Group Tooth decay is caused by the action of bacteria in your mouth, which release acids that eat away at your teeth. The bacteria feed on sugars in the food residue left on your teeth after eating. The bacteria that cause tooth decay is found in plaque, which is a filmy substance that is continually forming on your teeth and gums. When bacteria consume the sugars on teeth, they release acids that will destroy tooth enamel and result in decay. Tooth decay can cause pain, infection, and cavities, and can eventually result in tooth loss. Prevention is always the best medicine for tooth decay. Brushing and flossing are important to prevent damage to your teeth. Teeth should be brushed at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, in the morning and before going to bed at night. Flossing should be done at least once per day. If left untreated, tooth decay will lead to cavities and the need for filings.
