Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

The mystery of death has troubled and fascinated humanity since the fall of our first parents, Adam and

Eve. Death comes to us as an inheritance from the Original Sin, and by our own personal sins we have

signed-on to this tragic legacy. All have sinned and are deprived of the glory of God, St. Paul teaches.1

Indeed, many people view death as an unremittingly frightening prospect, one from which they spend their lives trying to distract themselves, because they feel overwhelmed by their sins or because they lack faith in

God.

Our own experiences of mourning deceased family members and friends teach us the deep longing of the

human heart for hope in the face of death. But we also know, in our own lives or through others, the

temptation to avoid thoughts of death, as well as the temptation either to move too quickly through our

mourning or to dwell on our sadness with too little hope. Many people are tempted to engage in the process

of mourning as an intense, but merely human, drama. And we know that there are many who, out of a

different kind of concern, wish to avoid “making a fuss” in favor of extremely simplified acts of “saying

goodbye” to their deceased loved ones.

Today, these temptations and others are deeply influencing the approach to death and burial taken even by

those of the household of faith, the Church. Many Catholics have lost a clear sense about how to face death

with faith and hope, about the importance of exercising Christian charity by praying for our beloved dead,

and about what it truly means to experience the consolation that only our communion with Jesus Christ can

offer.

For it is in Jesus that we find the definitive answer to sin and death. We know, following upon the words of

St. Paul above, that by God we are justified freely by his grace through the redemption in Christ Jesus.2

At Holy Mass, when the priest offers Eucharistic Prayer IV, he addresses the Father in these words: And

you so loved the world, Father most holy, that in the fullness of time you sent your Only Begotten Son to

be our Savior To accomplish your plan, he gave himself up to death, and, rising from the dead, he

destroyed death and restored life. We hear proclaimed in this prayer, and throughout Sacred Scripture and

the Church’s Tradition, this foundational truth: the Passover of Jesus Christ through death to risen life is

our Passover as well.

Christ is risen! And he invites us to share in his victory. The salvation won by Christ for all of us becomes

a gift for each of us by virtue of our Baptism:

Or are you unaware that we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were

indeed buried with him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the

glory of the Father, we too might live in newness of life.3

DIRECTIVES FOR CATHOLIC FUNERAL:

1. Who can be buried from the Church?

Any baptized Catholic can be buried from the Church, those who have been most

faithful in the practice and those who have been less faithful or separated from the

Church, through illness, distance or special circumstances. Non-Catholic members of a

parishioner’s family may be buried from the Church unless it was contrary to their

wishes and will during their life. Catechumens who are in the process of the Rite of

Christian Initiation are also to be buried from the Church. Children are honored with

Christian burial if the parents intended for the child to be baptized but the child died

prior to baptism. Unless there was some indication of repentance prior to their death,

funerals would only be denied to apostates, heretics and schismatics, and those who are

such notorious sinners that providing the funeral rites would cause scandal.

2. Can those who have died as a result of suicide be buried from the Church?

Yes, previous laws forbidding such have been changed. There are prayers included in

the Order of Christian Funerals (OCF) for this circumstance.

3. May someone who has not been able to attend Church for a few years because

of living in a nursing home still be buried from a parish church?

Yes. Absence from their parish due to such circumstances does not separate them from

the community of the Church and a Funeral Liturgy.

4. Why does the Church not sacramentally anoint bodies after death?

One purpose of the Sacrament of the Sick and its anointing of the living person is to

instill hope and healing before death. After death, when healing can no longer take

place, the Church has other prayers but does not anoint the dead body. The Church

provides a number of rites or liturgies as parishes offer the ministry of consolation to

families experiencing sickness and death. First, for the sick, the Church has the

Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. As soon as a person is seriously sick or injured, the

parish should be called to request the anointing. This anointing can be received many

times in one’s life and should not be limited to the last hour of life. After death, the

Church does not anoint the body but offers other special prayers commending the soul to

the Merciful Lord. The Anointing of the Sick can be received many times by a Catholic.

Pastors often remind their parishioners that the sick are to be anointed at the beginning

of a serious illness as well as through the various stages of the illness as it progresses.

The sacrament is not reserved to be celebrated only within the last hours of one’s life.

The Sacrament of the Sick is for the living and the hope of being reunited at the Altar of

the Lord, Once a person dies, the priest may offer different prayers for the dead but does

not anoint the body.

In Memory of

One of our beloved and very active Knights

died on March 28th, Doctor Charles Skowron of Grand Marais Street in Grosse Pointe Park.

The Skowron family has lived in the Parish since the 70's. “Doc” will be greatly missed due to his loving example for the rest of us. Many parishioners benefitted from his photographs of all kinds of events in the parish. These photos showed up in the bulletin immediately following both Parish and School events.

His wife, Betty, died in October of 2011. We ask for prayers for the repose of their souls.

On Friday, April 19th, the Student Council will hold auditions for a school talent show at 7:30 am, during the noon hour, and after school if necessary.

Sunday is First Holy Communion at the 11:00 Mass. Please join in the celebration.

Discipleship is the common theme linking

today’s Scripture passages. In the Acts of

the Apostles, Peter and his fellow Apostles

fearlessly witness Christ to the Sanhedrin.

They are honored to suffer for Jesus’ name,

regardless of the cost. In the Book of

Revelation, the faithful praise the Lamb

with honor and glory. In St. John’s

Gospel, Jesus, following His Resurrection,

asks Peter three times if he loves Him.

Peter responds “Yes” each time, solidify-

ing his discipleship and eventually leading

to his martyrdom. Expressions of stew-

ardship begin with discipleship in the

Lord. Like the Apostles, are we boldly

willing to give witness to Christ and

follow Him — whatever the cost?

The Honorable Willie G. Lipscomb, Jr., estab-lished The Handgun Intervention Program (H.I.P.) in July 1993. This program strives to educate citizens about the senseless violence that all too often results from possession of handguns. The 36th District Court’s approach to this widespread problem is unique in that it is the first program in the nation in which the court orders defendants to attend a class as a condition of their bond. This new approach has proven effective and has received national acclaim.
