SUNDAY THOUGHT
Luke 1:39-45
In today’s Gospel reading we are given a picture of a
totally other centered Individual, Mary, the Mother of
Jesus Christ. Upon hearing that her cousin was
expecting a child, Mary went as fast as she could to be
with Elizabeth. Then we are told that once there she
remained to be of assistance to Elizabeth during her
pregnancy for three months. This selfless giving on
Mary’s part was the key to her being chosen to be the
Mother of the Lord. If Jesus is to be alive today in our
own world, if His presence is to be felt by people who
still do not know Him, then we need to be like Mary.
He can only come to birth through our selfless acts of
love. Within days, we will be celebrating the birth of
Jesus Christ at Christmas. This celebration invites us
to open ourselves to the service of others. Only by
doing so will we be able to truly come in touch with
the deepest meaning of this celebration. Jesus gave
himself to the world and He is calling us to do the
same for one another. With Mary as our guide and
model, let us seek out her prayers to be Christ for
others.

CELEBRATNG THE SAINTS
Saint Mutien-Marie Wiaux, Religious (1841-1917)
Louis-Joseph Wiaux was born in the small
village of Mellet in French-speaking Belgium to a
devotedly Catholic family. The third of six children, his
father was a blacksmith, while his mother ran a café out
of their home. Wiaux was a gentle, obedient boy who
was marked by his piety, leading his classmates to pray
at their local church at the end of the school day. After
finishing elementary school, he for a time, attempted to
practice the blacksmith trade, but was both physically
and temperamentally unfit for this career. The call to join
a religious order, meanwhile, had begun to take root in
his heart, and he considered following his brother into
the Society of Jesus. The pastor of the town, however,
spoke to the boy about the Brothers of the Christian
Schools who were about to open a school in the nearby
town of Gosselies. He enter their novitiate on 7 April
1856, and received the habit that following July. A that
time he was also given the religious name of Mutien-
Marie after an ancient Roman martyr.
In 1859 Mutien-Marie was assigned to teach in a
school in the village of Mallone, Belgium where he
would spend the next 58 years, until his death. At first,
combining teaching with the spiritual life was difficult
for Mutien, and his students were known as disruptive
and out of control. His performance as a teacher was
judged to be so poor that his Superiors considered
expelling him from their Order, a teaching one, for the
good name of the school. But in time, with the help of
the Brother who headed the Fine Arts Department,
Brother Mutien-Marie grew into an effective teacher and
Prefect of discipline, known for his patience and piety.
He taught music and art, a saint of sensibility not
intellect. He was known within the community for being
available to help with any need which arose, whether it
was comforting a homesick student or going to the train
station to meet a traveler unfamiliar with the city. He
also taught catechism to the children of the town at the
local parish church. He was also known to spend
whatever free time he could in front of the Blessed
Sacrament in the Brothers’ chapel.
Generally in good health throughout his religious
life, Mutien began to fail significantly in 1916. He
entered the community infirmary in January of 1917 and
died on 30 January 1917. He was buried two days later in
the Brothers’ plot in the town cemetery of Mallone. His
reputation for sanctity began to spread immediately and
his grave became a place of pilgrimage where many
miracles were reported. He was canonized on 10
December 1989 by Saint Pope John Paul II and his feast
day is January 30

WELCOME HOME FOR CHRISTMAS
Every Catholic can be a minister of
welcome, mercy, and understanding to
those who have stopped practicing their
Catholic Faith through indifference or neglect. Invite a
family member or friend whom you know isn’t going to
church to come with you on Christmas. We are all
lessened because they are absent and we are all
strengthened by their presence. Welcome them home
for Christmas.

LIGHTHOUSE MEDIA
Please check out the new CDs on the Lighthouse media
display in the gathering area. The featured CD this
week is Beyond Belief: Following Christ Today. Fr.
Mike Schmitz tackles some of the most difficult topics
in the Church today with humor, clarity, and theological
truth. In this talk, he challenges us to not settle for
mediocrity and to allow Christ to change our lives. Fr.
Mike goes on to explain that once we are changed by
the love of Jesus, then together we can change the

The Halls are Alive with the Sound of Music
Our current music program is a continuous part of the curriculum for every student at St. Anthony of
Padua School. Mrs. Wortman brings a “symphony” of knowledge and experience to our current General Music
classes.
The musical journey begins in grades K-4 with the exploration of music through songs, movement and
instruments. Gradually children learn about notes, rhythm, and beat. As they progress, they’re ready to have an
introduction to reading music, music composition, performance, and appreciation. Grades 5- 6 continue with the
basics but are also mastering the hand chimes in preparation for our annual Christmas concert.
Seventh and eighth graders have been focusing on American music history and music composition. Using Web
Quest, students are learning about the development of American music. Special notation software helps students
learn musical concepts and experiment with music composition. In conjunction with the
notation software our seventh graders will also learn to play the ukulele during the second semester.
Mrs. Wortman also directs our student choir this year. This year they are hoping to add harmony to their various
performances so they have been learning about how to blend and balance the sounds. The choir sings the Psalms at
Mass and with also be part of the Christmas concert. They are also looking forward to giving a solo concert at Mt.
Alverna in December.
It’s a very busy program but wait! There’s more. This year the music students will be presenting a spring musical to
be directed by Mrs. Wortman (and her helpers). We will be presenting Annie Jr... Our hopeful performers (4-8) are
already signing up for auditions which will take place December 8-9. Performances are scheduled for Friday-
Saturday, April 15-16, 2016. Be sure to mark your calendars!
Strike Up the Band ….
Here at St. Anthony’s we also offer many instrumental music lessons. Mrs. Potting has continued to give violin
lessons. She offers lessons to children from first grade up. There are currently about 20 students
enrolled in violin. Their group(s) will perform in our annual spring concert.
In addition, SAPS participate with other area Catholic schools in the Elementary Band Program established and
sponsored by Padua High School. Mrs. Andrea Mikolajczyk, who directs the program, visits our school weekly and
offers lessons as well as a band rehearsal. Students from various schools combine to form the Beginner, Concert, and
Symphonic bands which perform at the Padua High School for their Christmas and spring concerts. In addition,
SAPS musicians also perform at our own spring concert along with Mrs. Wortman’s and Mrs. Potting’s students.
Hope you will join us!
