MOUNT  CARMEL  NEWS

Dear Brothers and Sisters of Our Lady of Mount Carmel,

May you have a blessed celebration of Independence Day. Let us be sure to thank God for the many blessings we enjoy.

On June 10 we celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation for 52 of our parish teenagers, 10 of whom were Academy alumni. Though the day was beautiful and the Mass went off without a glitch, I felt more than a tinge of sadness about it. Here is why: As pastor of OLMC, I did not know most of the candidates. In large measure that is my own fault. We just have not crossed paths enough to know who was who or anything about most of these students. And, for many of them, it will be the last time I will see them for some time. Though they all wrote letters to me attesting to the desire to be confirmed and stating their commitment to do more, the fact is that many consider Confirmation as graduation – they are done and want us to leave them alone.

Therefore, I am going to commit to a sincere effort to address this matter in the coming year. I am going to agree to celebrate an evening Sunday Mass aimed at and attended by the next Confirmation class. I pick Sunday nights as the time when almost every other competing activity is done for the weekend.

I have asked Elliot Guerra to head up this revitalized Confirmation program and Justin Fernandez to devote all his youth ministry energy to this program. The Parish Council and I have challenged Elliot and Justin to make this program so vibrant and interesting that two years from now other parishes will be calling us to learn how we did it and how to replicate a Spirit-filled Confirmation preparation experience.

Some have been concerned that this means that Elliot and Justin are leaving our Academy. Not at all! Both will be fulfilling every single role they presently carry out in school. Justin will continue to lead campus ministry and teach middle school religion. Elliot will handle all the communication functions and web site management that he presently does. And, Elliot will be presenting a full year of dramatic productions just as he has done in recent years.

I consider this a WIN-WIN. We are bringing our best young talent to the service of our future Catholic family and we are not diminishing our National Blue Ribbon Academy in any way.

So, here is the last thing that must be said. We need…we need the parents of our next Confirmation class to back this effort and make sure their teens attend the Sunday evening Masses. And, of course, parents are more than welcome to attend.

Stay tuned. You will be hearing a lot more about this effort in the coming months.

Sincerely yours in Christ and Our Lady of Mount Carmel,

fr. Dan [email protected]

What is RCIA? Is RCIA for You?

RCIA is the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. The Church welcomes into the RCIA process of preparation

persons who have never been baptized, those already baptized in another Christian tradition, or baptized Catholics who have not received First Eucharist or Confirmation. The celebration of Christian initiation takes place at the Easter Vigil liturgy. If you or someone you know has been thinking about becoming a member of the Catholic Church, but would first like information about the process, please call Sr. Regina at 201-871-4662.

Check it out!

“MY SUMMER PRAYER

As I begin the summer months, gracious and loving Jesus,

remind me of Your ever present guidance and love.

Give me confidence in Your presence, remembering all that I have been

taught this year and let me live it in my summer experiences.

As I work, play and enjoy my family and friends this summer,

may I feel Your love within me, guiding me toward all that is right and just.

Let me be grateful for the gift of summer, Jesus. Allow me

to enjoy it safely and remind me daily of Your love for me.

Amen.”

to the least ones, we do to you.

Family Promise of Bergen County and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church are teaming up to “open the doors of mercy.” There are many ways to help! Please email me, Elliot Guerra, at [email protected] with what you can do. Here are some ways to help:

Volunteer Shifts of volunteers are required to cook and serve dinner in the evening. We can also use volunteers in the morning to set up for breakfast. At least two volunteers must say overnight as per Family Promise regulations. Fr. Dan, Mr. Ed McElroy (OLMC Facilities Manager) and I have already taken three of the seven nights! Donate We will need to fill our pantry with items for the families, for example luncheon meats, snacks and more. Also, while Family Promise provides beds, we'll need gently used or new linens and new toiletries.

Pray Please offer up the volunteers, organizers and families in your prayers leading up to and during the time of service that the Spirit of God fosters within us a successful event. We understand people travel during the summer and if you are, we hope you enjoy your rest and ask that you continue to pray for us. May OLMC continue to be a place that “No matter who you are, no matter what you’ve done, no matter where you’re from, no matter where you’re going, no matter how good or bad things seem, you are always welcome.” I look forward to hearing from you and thanks!

Elliot

Fr. Dan has challenged us in the spirit of Pope Francis' call to "Open the doors of mercy!" After working for two years,

our opportunity has arrived! The OLMC community will open her doors to working homeless families from July 23rd through July 30th, 2017 as part of the temporary housing program run by Family Promise of Bergen County. As of this writing, two single mothers and a total of three children will be staying in our parish auditorium (Odyssey Theatre) for a week. We will provide shelter, dinner, breakfast and supply lunch. The families only eat and sleep here during the evening hours; during the day they work and their children attend daycare. "…the Holy Door will become a Door of Mercy through which anyone who enters will experience the love of God who consoles, pardons, and instills hope."

 “A Thanksgiving for America

Almighty God, giver of all good gifts; we thank you…

For this nation, our heritage, and for calling us to be the United States of America;

For the founders of this country, the liberty they won for themselves and us, and for the torch of freedom they lit for nations then unborn;

For the natural majesty and beauty of this land;

For the great resources of this nation;

For the diversity of people, races, cultures, languages, religions, and beliefs that fill this country;

For the men and women who have made this country strong and for the men and women who in the day of decision ventured much for the liberties we now enjoy;

For the faith we have inherited in all its rich variety, for the freedom to express and live by that faith, and for the many ways in which you manifest yourself to and reveal yourself in the peoples of this nation.” Source: interruptingthesilence.com
