Dear Fellow Parishioners, 2nd August 2015 on the 10th of November 1942 I was still too young to know it was my 2nd. birthday, let alone any of the other events swirling around Europe during the midpoint of World War II. I have since discovered that on that same day in London Winston Churchill gave a famous speech at a Lord Mayoral dinner in which he was quoted as saying "I have not become the King's First Minister in order to preside over the liquidation of the British Empire". These were brave words in the face of overwhelming difficulties and they galvanised the populace to make sure that his words held true; in a similar way Moses' words and God's actions encouraged the Israelites who were complaining while

in the wilderness. This weekend we are holding our Annual Parish Assembly at which I am to give my first report to the people who are attending - in not quite so many numbers as may have been listening to Churchill's speech or following Moses! In many ways the Church is very like both groups under siege, not just from the usual forces of opposition and indifference that have operated from without, but even more so from the perceived scandals going on within its own ranks. For this reason I identify strongly with the sentiments of the late Prime Minister in this paraphrase; "I have not become the Lord's 'first-time' parish priest in order to preside over the liquidation of any part of His Kingdom". On the surface the North Harbour Community is far from being liquidated but to make sure this holds true, I invite as many parishioners as possible to attend the Annual Assembly to hear how we can best face the future with the same bravery, generosity and sense of community that the people of the United Kingdom displayed under the challenges of their times. Then, like the Israelites we can continue to proclaim: "the things our Fathers have told us, we will tell to the next generation".

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

‘What must we do to do the work God wants?’ John 6: 28

At school: How can I tell what God wants me to do? Take a moment to think… At work or study: Does the work of God for me start with…. building relationships? In my family life: What are God’s plans for our family this week?

Prayer this week? God, Creator and Saving Spirit.

May we also be people who build up, bring to fullness and love deeply. Amen

From St. Augustine

Lord, help us, so that a change may be achieved in us, and we may find

You ready to offer Yourself for the

enjoyment of those who love You.

Commentary on Psalm 6, 5

Next week is the first of our Charitable Works Fund (CWF) appeals for the new financial year. The CWF is a centralised fund for the support of charitable and pastoral activities of the Diocese that extend beyond the limits of any single parish. The funds are raised by bequests, public donations and a parish quota. The money raised by the CWF is used to support many charitable organisations in the Diocese including the Confraternity of Christian

Doctrine, St Lucy’s School, St Edmond’s School, Ephphata Centre and Centrecare Broken Bay. There are three CWF collections in the parish each year to enable us to raise funds towards our quota. Donations to the CWF are fully tax-deductible. Envelopes will be attached to next week’s bulletins or they are available in the Church foyer.

Vinnies Winter Sleepout

Friday 19th evening saw the Mission Team at St

Kieran’s primary school organise a “Winter Sleep

Out” for Years 5 and 6. Last term the children learnt

about the many reasons that contribute to homelessness

and in the light of the gospel message they organised a

Winter Sleep Out. Their aims were to increase the

awareness of the plight of the homeless and to raise funds to donate towards St

Vincent De Paul. Late contributions to this worthy cause can be sent in an envelope to the school office.
