In response to this, using our twenty years of experience in developing and delivering community music training and activity, CMW developed the Community Music Activity Resource Pack to be used as a tool kit for community music delivery. The Community Music Activity Resource Pack helps identify suitable music activity for organisations by presenting case studies of different workshops and looking at the practical steps needed to set up this work. There is also a further reading section signposting to other organisations for additional information such as: Child Protection, Health and Safety, and Musicians Union. The pack is free and will be available as a download from our website and in hardcopy on request from mid March. It is funded by the National Lottery through the Arts Council of Wales Training Programme and the Reach the Heights project, funded through the European Social Fund.

Community Music Activity Resource Pack

Good Luck Gethin!

SPRING sees the launch of Community Music Wales’ Community Music Activity Resource Pack. The pack is designed for organisations already using, or wishing to use music as an engagement tool.

CMW embarked on this initiative in 2009, in response to an increase in requests made to us for advice and guidance. We carried out consultation across Wales with organisations, community music practitioners, local authorities and advisors. The aim was to research the extent to which music is currently being used within local communities, what level of training the practitioners have received and what barriers exist preventing the use of community music.

Our findings demonstrated that there was little information available about community music practice, predominantly due to a lack of funding and resources. In response to this, using our twenty years of experience in

developing and delivering community music training and activity, CMW developed the Community Music Activity Resource Pack to be used as a tool kit for community music delivery.

Man’s Best Friend

HARRY the Noiseworks dog was over the moon recently when he received a request to be ‘Best Dog’ at his brother’s wedding. The Wedding, taking place in April, is set to be a large event with a select guest list and some live music planned. Harry is understandably very excited.

When asked about his organisational skills, Harry said; “The stag do will be a modest affair, most likely

a long walk in the local park followed by a nap and a water bowl in a beer garden. As for the wedding,

I’m looking forward to the cake the most.”

Elton John was unavailable for comment.

IN Winter 2010, Community Music Wales was commissioned by the Coalition of Disabled people in Cardiff to provide weekly music workshops.

These workshops provide opportunities for people with profound and multiple learning disabilities to explore music making through the introduction to varied music instruments and technologies.

Neil White, Community Music Wales Tutor, leads the workshop once a week. He has a wide repertoire of popular songs that he will sing with the participants whilst they try out various percussion instruments and Soundbeams.

Adam Williams, Project Officer, spent an afternoon at the workshop and said; “It was great to see the residents and staff enjoying themselves and actively engaging with the activity.”

The workshops were such a great success that the Coalition has asked CMW to continue the workshops indefinitely. For further information on CMW’s bespoke packages, please call us on 029 2083 8060, or email [email protected].

Complete Control Women Rock!

AS we celebrate the centenary of International Women’s Day, we at CMW are shining the spotlight on some of our very own talented females.

North Wales Music Industry Mentor, Martin Hoyland has been enthusing about working with a new all girl band on the CCM scheme.

CCM started work with the girl group in October 2010. All newcomers to playing in a band, they have been receiving individual instrument lessons alongside song-writing and band rehearsal workshops.

The band said “We are enjoying (the workshops) very much. They are helping us with many aspects in our lives such as patience and confidence. It is an incredible experience and we are all so grateful for this opportunity.”

From writing their first song shortly after joining the scheme they are now enthusiastically putting tracks together and enjoying working them out in band rehearsals.

Martin last met with the girls last week. He said; “They are buzzing! The singer is practicing guitar for two hours per night. I’ve seen their confidence grow over the past few months and they are obviously absorbing everything they are learning, practicing it and applying it to their music”.

The participants are also learning to deal with the problems that arise when you’re in a band, such as musical direction and compromising.

The band (whose name is yet to be confirmed) are planning to record their first demo soon and will hopefully do their first gig in April, so watch this space for further information.

Complete Control Music (CCM) works with 14-19 year olds involved in making music. It is a mentoring scheme which gives practical advice on the music industry. This project works with a wide range of young people from many different musical genres, from singer songwriters to bands to DJs. CCM pairs young people with mentors who have worked professionally within the music industry to provide specialised face to face mentoring. The project is part of Reach the Heights and is part funded by the European Social Fund.

Activity in the NorthCMW’s North branch is brimming with activity this Spring.

From early March, CMW will be working with young bands and musicians across Denbighshire as part of Menter Iaith’s ‘Cymwel’ project. This project aims to increase the use of Welsh among pupils in schools in Denbighshire.

Commisioned by Gwynedd Council, the ‘Clwb Can Gwynedd’ project will see CMW work with three youth clubs in the area delivering songwriting and technical workshops. These exciting workshops will culminate with an original song being written and recorded.

The Welsh Language board have commissioned CMW to provide four days of workshops in Primary Schools. As part of ‘Cynradd Rap!’, participants will learn the art of rapping original poetry.

Details of these bespoke workshops and many more, along with information on the diverse services CMW have to offer can be found on the CMW website: www.communitymusicwales.co.uk or by phoning us on 029 2083 8060.
